William Byron Earns First Cup Victory

MLB Last Night 

The Chicago Cubs put on a home run derby yesterday afternoon in Cincinnati. Kyle Schwarber, Jason Heyward, and Ian Happ each hit two long balls apiece to beat the Reds 10-1. It was the first time in major league history that all 3 outfielders on one team hit 2 home runs in a single game.

 

Rookie Luis Robert hit a game ending homerun as the Chicago White Sox beat the Royals 5-2 in 10 innings. The White Sox have hit a franchise-record 52 home runs in the month of August. 

 

Dexter Fowler had 3 RBI Adam Wainwright threw a complete game as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cleveland Indians7-2. 

 

 

(Olympia-cf)-- Olympia Fields Country Club was not a friendly golf course to the PGA Tour this weekend. The greens were extremely fast, and if you landed in the wrong spot, it was shooting off the back. Dustin Johnson needed a 33-foot putt to force a playoff against John Rahm, and Johnson Converted on the 18th green. Rahm won the playoff, and the tournament yesterday night for his second win this season. Rahm is now first in the FedEx Cup Standings. 


 

(Daytona-cf)-- 22-year old William Byron has willed his way into the Nascar Playoffs with a win this past Saturday at Daytona International Speedway. This was Byron’s first win of the season and the first win of his career. 


 

On Saturday night, The NASCAR Cup Series wrapped up the regular season at the World Center of Racing, Daytona International Speedway.    Motor Racing Network covered all the action from green to checkered. 

 

 

William Byron avoided two big crashes in the final 10 laps to win his first career Cup Series race.    The NASCAR Cup Series begins the 2020 Playoffs this Sunday at Darlington Raceway with the Cookout Southern 500.   Motor Racing Network will have coverage starting at 4pm.

Cardinals lose Double Header to Pirates

The Cardinals lost a double header yesterday to the Pirates 2-0 and 4-3 in 8 innings. 

 

The Cubs and Sox had the day off.

MLB Scores from Last Night: 

The Chicago Cubs made a late push in the latter half of last night's game against the Tigers, it wasn’t enough as the Tigers beat the Cubs 7-6.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals rallied for four runs in the 9th inning to beat the Royals 6-5.

 

The Chicago White Sox put on another home run derby yesterday afternoon on the South Side. The Sox hit four homeruns to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-3.

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- MLB, and NBA games were postponed last night due to protests over the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha Wisc. Players and teams made the decision to not play yesterday afternoon. The games that were postponed could be made up as early as today. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- The first round of the BMW Championship from Olympia Fields Country Club gets underway this afternoon. The featured group of the day is Dustin Johnson who shot -30 last week, Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger. 

 

 

(Indianapolis-cf)-- The Pacers have fired Head Coach Nate McMillan. The firing comes after the Pacers got swept in the first round of the NBA Playoffs against the Miami Heat.

(Urbana-cf)-- The University of Illinois Fighting Illini Football program received big news yesterday. Punter Blake Hayes was selected as an AP Preseason All-American first team. WR Bryan Hightower has also been granted immediate eligibility for the upcoming season. 

 

 

(Undated-jm) -- Jimmie Johnson heads into this weekend's race at Daytona just outside the top 16 looking to get into the playoffs for the final time. It’s been nearly 3 years since the 7 time champion has won. He talks about the fear of possibly never winning again in NASCAR…

Javier Baez hit 2 home runs as the Chicago Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers 9-3 last night. The Cubs are now the second franchise to win 11,000 regular season games. 

 

Paul DeJong had 3 RBI and Jack Flaherty tossed 5 shoutout innings as the Cardinals beat the Royals 9-3.

(Chicago-cf)-- Former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long will be back on Sundays. Long announced on Twitter last night that he will be joining the CBS crew as a co-host of “That Other Pregame show”

Hamlin, Harvick win at Dover

Yu Darvish had 10 strike outs as the Cubs beat the White Sox 2-1.

 

Yadier Molina had four hits and top prospect Dylan Carlson hit his first major league home run as the Cardinals beat the Reds 6-2.

 

 

NASCAR

Kevin Harvick regained the Cup Series lead with his seventh win , dominating Sunday at Dover International Speedway, a day after Denny Hamlin's victory. Harvick and Hamlin have emerged as the clear contenders to win it all. Martin Truex Jr. finished second in both Dover races. He had finished third in five straight races headed into the weekend.

Cards and White Sox win

MLB Last night: 

The Cardinals rallied for 3 runs in the 9th inning to beat the Reds 5-4.

 

Lucas Giolito fanned 13 batters to lead the White Sox  9-0 over the Detroit Tigers and complete the series sweep.

 

In the NBA last night the Miami Heat defeated the Indiana Pacers to take a 2-0 lead in the first round of the playoffs. The Heat won 109-100. The Minnesota Timberwolves have also won the NBA draft lottery for the 2020 draft, and will have the first overall pick. 

 

 

(Norton, Mass-cf)-- Tiger Woods shot a 68 yesterday in the opening round of the Northern Trust. Woods also made a putter swap mid-round, and didn’t have a reason going back to his old putter. Harris English is tied with Tommy Fleetwood for the top spot after the first round. 

 

 

(Los Angeles-cf)-- Thom Brennaman, son of Hall of Fame Broadcaster Marty Brennaman has been pulled off Fox NFL games for using a homiphoic slur. Brennamn said the slur on a Cincinnati Reds broadcast Tuesday Night, the Reds have also let Brennaman go.

The Chicago Cubs split a double-header with the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday. The Cardinals took game one 9 to 3 and the Cubs took game two 4-3. 

 

The Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 

 

 

(Indianapolis-cf)-- Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren won’t revisit the postponement of fall sports. The Big Ten has faced significant backlash from the August 11 announcement to postpone Big Ten football. “We understand the disappointment and the timing of the decision which came six days after the league announced it’s 10 game schedule” Warren said. The NCAA also made a statement on eligibility of fall athletes. The NCAA Council voted yesterday to recommend all athletes whose fall seasons are being altered by the pandemic to get another year of eligibility. 

 

(Nortan Mass-cf)-- Brooks Koepka withdrew from the Northern Trust yesterday afternoon. Koepka has had a knee alignment through the restart which has not healed, and he has ended his PGA run for this year. Koepka, who was ranked first to start the season, finished 97th in the Fed-Ex cup standings.

MLB Last night:

Yu Darvish allowed one run and eight hits over 6 innings as the Chicago Cubs doubled up the Cardinals 6-3.

 

The Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 10 to 4. Tim Anderson hit another lead off homer for the South Siders to get the momentum rolling early. 

 

NHL Last Night: 

The Las Vegas Golden Knights beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 to win the opening series of the NHL Playoffs.

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- There may be a lineup change in the Cubs batting order. NL Rookie of the Year and MVP Kris Bryant has been the lead off man for the North Siders most of the season, but that position would soon go to Ian Happ. Bryant, who is not completely healthy after a play where he jammed his wrist on a fly ball in left field, is batting .177 on the year. Cubs fans could see Happ in  the leadoff spot as early as tonight. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- Chicago Bears Cornerback Artie Burns suffered a torn ACL yesterday at training camp. Burns, who was a Free Agent Signing from the Steelers will not play a game for the Bears this season. The job will now fall to Rookie and Second Round pick Jayloyn Johnson.

(Chicago-cf)-- Many NFL Stadiums this year will not be packed with fans, or tailgaters watching their favorite teams on Sunday afternoons. However, the Chicago Bears are still unsure if there will be any fans in the stands at all. Team officials are working with city officials to “monitor the situation” and evaluate the possibility of having fans at Soldier Field this season.

Chase Elliott Wins at Indianapolis

MLB: 

The Chicago Cubs suffered the first series loss of the season as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cubs 6-5 yesterday.

 

The Cardinals returned to play and won both games of the double header on Saturday over the White Sox, but lost 7-2 yesterday as the White Sox hit four back to back long balls. 

 

In the NHL Last night the Chicago Blackhawks forced a game five yesterday afternoon as they beat The Vegas Golden Knights 3-1 avoiding the sweep in the first round. 

 

 

(Daytona-cf)-- Chase Elliot was the winner of the Daytona Road Course yesterday afternoon, and he’s won the last three road courses Nascar has ran. Chase Elliot, Denny Hamlin, and Martin Truex had the best three cars of the day. 

 

 

(Indianapolis-cf)-- There will be an Andretti on the poll of the Indy 500 for the first time in 33 years. Marco Andretti was 2 months old the last time a member of his family led the field of the 500 to the green flag, the 33 year old Indy Car Driver has broken the “Andretti Curse” The Indy 500 is slated to be run this Sunday.

Cubs win, off to best start since 1907

The Chicago Cubs are off to the best start in franchise history since 1907 at 13-3 with another 4 to 2 win over the Brewers at Wrigley Field. 

 

 

(St. Louis-cf)-- The St. Louis Cardinals could return to the diamond for the first time in nearly two weeks. If there are no positive tests in the organization, the Red Birds will play a double-header in Chicago against the White Sox on Saturday. 


 

NHL:

The Chicago Blackhawks dropped game two yesterday afternoon. The Hawks tied the game up late in the third period to send it to overtime, but it wasn't enough as the Vegas Golden Nights 4-3. 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- The Illini Prairie Conference will be joining the Apollo Conference for this upcoming season. The decision was made by conference leaders yesterday afternoon to join the two conferences for football only, and for only the potential spring season of next year. 


 

(Indianapolis-cf)-- NCAA President Mark Emmert announced yesterday that there will not be any NCAA Championship games or events this fall. Emmert said there are not enough teams participating in order to have championship events due to the pandemic. More than 50% of the schools in the NCAA have postponed their seasons.

MLB Scoreboard: 

Anthony Rizzo homered last night to help propel the Chicago Cubs to a 7-2 win over Cleveland. 

 

Tim Anderson was a double shy of the cycle for the White Sox last night, notching four hits and a homer. The White Sox beat the Tigers 7-5.

 

 

(Agusta-cf)-- There will be no roars on the 16th hole of of the Masters Tournament this year. Agusta National determined that the event will be played without fans amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Masters is slated to begin November 12. 

 

 

(Indianapolis-cf)-- Drivers returned to an empty track yesterday for practice at Indiana Motorspeedway. Drivers were able to walk through Gasoline Alley undispersed for the first time since World War II. The  500, which usually runs on Memorial Day weekend is slated to run August 23.

(Urbana-cf)-- The Fighting Illini added more depth to their offensive line yesterday morning. Josh Gesky, a Manteno native committed to the Illini yesterday morning on Twitter. Gesky, a 6 foot 5 270 pound offensive tackle is the 17th commitment for the Fighting Illini for the class of 2021.

(St. Louis-cf)-- Major League Baseball has postponed another Cardinals series. The double-header that was scheduled to be played between the Red Birds and the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, was postponed yesterday afternoon by the league with more Cardinals players testing positive for Covid-19. The Cardinals now have 45 days to play 55 games. 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- The Big Ten is expected to make a decision today on the future of football. The season could be cancelled and moved to the spring due to the coronavirus pandemic.  Nebraska Head Coach, Scott Frost, told the media yesterday that Nebreska is prepared to play “outside” of the Big Ten if there is a decision to postpone, and John Harbaugh said that the season should be played in the fall citing the “facts” of the pandemic. This is a developing story and WPXN will update accordingly. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- The Chicago Blackhawks are scheduled to play the Las Vegas Golden Knights in a best of 7 series inside the NHL bubble. The Blackhawks first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin at 9:30 this evening.

(Buckley--jc) The Royal Giants followed up a perfect three week run in the regular E-I Baseball season with a sweep in the post season to win the annual tournament.

The Giants beat the Buckley Dutchmasters on Saturday afternoon with a two out two strike RBI from the Royals Hayden Cargo to  give Royal a three to one lead. The Dutchmasters had just tied the game at one in the bottom of the 8th. Buckley had chances in the bottom of the ninth, but came up empty. On Sunday at Schiewe Field, the Dutchmasters started the scoring in the top of the first on a two run home run by Nathan Walker. Royal scored 1 in the first, then took back the lead in the second inning with 4 runs and added one more run in the 7th to win 6-2.

(Urbana-cf)-- The University of Illinois Fighting Illini football program started training camp yesterday afternoon. Recent Louisville transfer Tre’Shaun Smith did not attend the first day of camp. Smith was also not listed on the final roster as of last night. The Illini are unsure of his absence.

(Urbana-cf)-- Schedules have been released for Big Ten football teams. The Fighting Illini will open the season at home September 3rd against Ohio State. Illinois has the 8th hardest schedule in the country. The Illini start training camp late this morning.

(St. Louis-cf)-- Longtime St. Louis catcher Yadier Molinda has confirmed that he was one of the players that has tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday afternoon. The nine time All-Star told the media yesterday that “I’ll do everything in my power to get back ASAP for Cardinals fans, the City of St. Louis and my teammates. As I recover, I request that you respect me and my family’s privacy during my absence from the team.” The Cardinals series against the Detroit Tigers has been postponed as other members of the Cardinals organization have also tested positive. The earliest the Red Birds could return to the diamond would be this Friday according to the League Office. 


 

(Urbana-cf)-- The University of Illinois released Covid-19 numbers among their athletes yesterday morning. Out of the 164 tests taken 23 were positive, and the University has totaled 1,200 tests. At this current time there are only three active cases among Fighting Illini athletes. 

 

(San Francisco-cf)-- Tiger Woods will be back for this weekend’s PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Woods will tee off Thursday with two other Major Champions Justin Thomas and Rory McIlory at 10:33 AM


 

(Road America-cf)-- Nascar Driver Brad Keselowski has a chance to get his fourth and fifth wins of the season coming up this weekend with the double header at Road America in Michigan. Keselowski says he likes his chances and he’s feeling confident…

The South will have Hoopeston Area, Georgetown-Ridgefarm, Westville, Bismarck-Henning-Rossvile-Alvin, Salt Fork, and Oakwood. 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- Could  Illini Basketball crack the preseason top 10 for the first time since 2005? There is a very strong chance that the Illini, with the return of Junior guard Ayo Dosunmu, and Sophomore big man Kofi Cockburn could be ranked in the preseason. 

 

 

(Dyersville IA-cf)-- The “Field of Dreams” game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox has been called off. The game will be made up in 2021 with the White Sox as one of the opponents. 

 

 

(Evanston-cf)-- The Northwestern Wildcats Football program has postponed football workouts due to positive Covid tests. According to the Chicago Tribune, some players have already been placed in quarantine, and “regiours health and safety protocols, as well as contact tracing are underway.” There has only been one positive test in the program as of last night. 

 

 

(Undated-cf)-- Could there be an XFL 3.0? The XFL first launched in 2001 when owner of the WWE Vince McMahon launched the league, which only lasted one season. The league was relaunched in February of this year, and only lasted one year. Actor, and former WWE Star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson purchased the XFL for $15 million yesterday. Johnson and his investors are planning to launch the season in 2021 with the new bubble concept due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The White Sox scored 7 runs in the 7th inning in a 9-2 win over the Royals.

Number 1 seed Royal defeated #4 seed El Paso 10-0 in the first semi final game of the E. I. Tournament. Storm Joop had 4 hits and 5 RBI as the #2 seed Buckley Dutchmasters defeated the #3 seed Paxton Swedes 15-5 in the second semi-final game. Royal and Buckley will play on Saturday at Buckley in the best of 3 Championship.

 

(Champaign-jm) -- Two key Illini Men’s Basketball players will return next season. Ayo Dosunmu will return to Champaign for his junior year. The 6 foot 5 Illini Guard announced Friday night he will withdraw his name from the NBA draft consideration. Dosunmu averaged just over 16 points a game last season. Saturday, Kofi Cockburn announced he too will withdraw and come back.

 

(Undated-jm) -- Junior high sports will be played after all. The IESA reversed their decision Friday and will allow fall sports of golf, softball, baseball and cross country. Practices can start today with games starting August 15th.
