The Cubs bounced back from their three-game sweep by Washington to take the opener of their series with the Mets, 5-2. Javier Baez and Addison Russell each had three hits.

 

The Cardinals continue to lead the NL Central by three games over Chicago after Yadier (YAH’-dee-ehr) Molina homered twice in a 6-3 victory at Milwaukee.

Champaign. – Fighting Illini head coach Lovie Smith announced Tuesday morning that LB Jake Hansen (defense), LB Dele Harding (defense), P Blake Hayes (special teams), OL Doug Kramer (offense) and OL Alex Palczewski (offense) have been voted team captains for the 2019 season. The captains were determined by a vote of Illini players. Illinois kicks off the 2019 season on Saturday when Akron comes to Memorial Stadium . The Cardinals polished off a four-game sweep of Colorado as Matt Carpenter broke out of a 4-for-29 skid with three hits, including a solo homer in a 11-4 thrashing of the Rockies. Dexter Fowler drove in three runs and Lane Thomas added a pinch-hit homer in the seventh as the Redbirds won for the 13th time in their last 16 games.

 

The Nationals completed a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field as Anthony Rendon went 4-for-5 with a solo homer and a tiebreaking single that led Washington to a 7-5, 11-inning win against the Cubs. Juan Soto added three hits and Stephen Strasburg struck out 10 in six innings, helping Washington finish off its first sweep of Chicago since September 2012.

 

 Reynaldo López pitched five no-hit innings before leaving with dehydration and flu-like symptoms in the White Sox’s 2-0 shutout of the Rangers. Shin-Soo Choo ended Chicago’s no-hit bid with a leadoff single off Aaron Bummer in the sixth. José Abreu (ah-BRAY’-oo) drove in both White Sox runs to reach 100 RBIs for the fifth time in six seasons.

Kyle Hendricks worked seven strong innings and the Cubs made the most out of two hits in their fifth consecutive win, 1-0 over the Giants.

 

 The Cardinals kept pace with the Cubs by erasing deficits of 2-0 and 5-2 in a 6-5 victory against the Rockies. Dexter Fowler supplied the go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh after Marcell Ozuna (oh-ZOO’-nah) Paul DeJong (deh-YUHNG’) hit two-run shots. 

 

Yoán Moncada (yoh-AHN’ mohn-KAH’-dah) lined a two-run homer his return from the injured list to help the White Sox down the Rangers, 6-1.

Champaign, ILL.– Head Coach Brad Underwood announced Tuesday that Jermaine Hamlin has signed a Big Ten Tender of Financial Aid with the University of Illinois.Hamlin is a 6-10, 225-pound center from Lincoln, Illinois. During his senior season at Lincoln Community High School he averaged 13.9 points on 71 percent shooting, along with 6.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.Hamlin scored in double figures in 22 of 31 games, with six 20-plus point performances. He set his career scoring high with 29 points against Bloomington on Feb. 12. He recorded three double-doubles on the season, with 18 points and 11 rebounds vs. Mattoon (Dec. 4), 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds vs. Rock Island (Feb. 2) and the 29-point, 11-rebound showing vs. Bloomington (Feb. 12).

Champaign--jc)  --. — Illinois freshman defensive back Marquez Beason suffered a season-ending injury August 13 at practice, head coach Lovie Smith announced Monday. Beason was a consensus four-star recruit out of Duncanville High School (Texas) and Illinois' top-rated high school recruit in the last 10 years.  Beason is set to have surgery in the near future.

 

For the first time, the defending national champion Clemson Tigers are No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 presented by Regions Bank .

Clemson won its second national title in three seasons behind freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence Alabama is 2nd, Georgia, is No. 3, followed by Oklahoma and  Ohio State.

Paul Goldschmidt smacked a two-run homer and Tommy Edman was 3-for-5 with a solo shot and two runs scored in the Cardinals’ 5-4 victory at Cincinnati.

Eddy Pineiro has won the Bears’ kicking competition. The Bears have cut kicker Elliott Fry, who was competing with Pineiro and several others for the job. Pineiro came to Chicago from the Raiders for a late-round draft pick after spending all of last year on injured reserve.

 

Former NFL and University Texas running back Cedric Benson has died in a motorcycle accident at age 36. Benson won the Doak Walker award as the nation’s top college running back in 2004 and was drafted fourth overall by the Bears in 2005. He also played for the Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers.

 

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) _ Denny Hamlin raced to his fourth NASCAR Cup victory of the season by holding off Matt DiBenedetto at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday. Hamlin won from the pole and overcame early damage to his Toyota and a loose wheel to win at Bristol for the second time in his career.

Former NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., his wife and daughter were hospitalized and released after their plane crashed in east Tennessee Thursday afternoon. NBC Sports says the family and 2 pilots were discharged from the hospital. The crash is still being investigated. Earnhardt was scheduled to be part of the NBC broadcast team for Saturday night’s race at Bristol. The network says he will skip the race to be with his family before returning to the broadcast booth at Darlington next month.

Amended Settlement in a Class-Action Concussion Lawsuit Against the NCAA Approved

UNDATED (AP) — A federal judge has approved an amended settlement in a class-action concussion lawsuit against the NCAA that will establish a 50-year medical-monitoring program for college athletes. The settlement was announced Monday by Hagens Berman, the law firm representing the plaintiffs. The case originated with a claim against the NCAA in 2011 by former Eastern Illinois football player Adrian Arrington.

Kris Bryant capped Chicago's four-run seventh with a three-run homer, and the Cubs rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-3.

 

Lane Thomas hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning, Paul Goldschmidt and Dexter Fowler also homered, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-9.

 

The Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0.

The Buckley Dutchmasters are E.I. baseball’s tournament champs. For the second day in a row it took a comeback to get a win against the Royal Giants. On Saturday, Cole Eshleman hit an RBI single to help the Dutchmasters to a 6-5 win. On Sunday he drew a bases loaded walk to end the game and win 8-7. It was Buckley’s fourth title in 5 years and 16th title overall.

 

NASCAR

Kevin Harvick has won a NASCAR Cup race at Michigan International Speedway for the second straight year, giving him two victories this year and 47 in his career.

The Stewart-Haas Racing driver pulled away from the competition in his Ford and finished more than a second ahead of Denny Hamlin. Kyle Larson was third and was followed by Martin Truex Jr., Daniel Suarez and Kyle Busch in the Consumers Energy 400.

White Sox and Yankees to Play in Iowa at Fields of Dreams Next Year

Anthony Rizzo had a pair of hits as part of a 30th birthday celebration, Nicholas Castellanos added to his Chicago surge with a pair of homers and the Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 12-5.

 

The Chicago White Sox will play a game against the New York Yankees next summer at the site in Iowa where the movie "Field of Dreams" was filmed. Major League Baseball says the White Sox will play host to the Yankees in Dyersville, Iowa, on Aug. 13. A temporary 8,000-seat stadium will be built on the site to accommodate the first major league game played in Iowa.

 

NFL Preseason

The Carolina Panthers beat the Bears 23-13.

The Packers beat the Houston Texans 28-26.

The Buffalo Bills beat the Indianapolis Colts 24-16.

 

EI Baseball

This is the final weekend of the E I Baseball season. The Buckley Dutchmasters were the regular season champions. The Royal Giants finished second. The two teams won their first round tournament games last Sunday and now will play a best of three championship series on Saturday and Sunday. Game 1 is set for a 2pm first pitch in Gifford at Franzen Field. Game Two takes place in Buckley at Schiewe Field at 1pm with a potential game 3 to follow.

Illini Improve to 2-0 on Trip to Italy

 The Dodgers swept the Cardinals with a 2-1 walk off win. 

 

Ian Happ hit his second career grand slam, José Quintana tossed two-hit ball through seven innings to win his sixth straight decision and the Chicago Cubs ripped the Oakland Athletics 10-1. 

 

Ivan Nova pitched eight scoreless innings, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1. Tim Anderson reached base five times and scored three runs. .

 

MLB 

 The Chicago Cubs have signed catcher Jonathan Lucroy. The 33-year-old Lucroy was designated for assignment by the Angels last Friday. The two-time All-Star is expected to join the NL Central-leading Cubs in Cincinnati Today. Lucroy will help plug a gap created when All-Star Willson Contreras strained his hamstring.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Bears will unveil statues of Hall of Famers Walter Payton and George S. Halas outside of Soldier Field on Sept. 3. The 12-foot, 3,000-pound bronze statues honoring the great running back and the franchise founder and coach will be made public two days before Chicago hosts Green Bay to kick off the NFL's 100th season. 

 

(Italy--jc)   The Illinois men's basketball team cruised to another win in the second game of a four-game Italy tour. Illinois shot 62.3 percent from the field in a 112-63 victory over the Gazzada All-Stars on Wednesday night. Much of Illinois' damage was done from long distance, as the Illini drained 16-of-24 from 3-point range (66.7 percent) during its second game in two days to improve to 2-0 on the tour. Illinois is off today, traveling from Milan to Florence. The Illini play at 1 Friday afternoon  against the Livorno All-Stars.

Cubs, Cards Lose, Sox Split

MLB

Cubs lefty Jon Lester was tagged for a career high-tying 11 runs in only four innings, that led the Oakland Athletics over Chicago 11-4.

 

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1

 

The Chicago White Sox split a double header with the Detroit Tigers taking the opener 5-3. The Tigers won the nightcap 10-6.

 

NFL

Jordy Nelson's NFL career ended in the same place where it began: Lambeau Field. Nelson signed a one-day contract with the Packers and announced his retirement after 11 seasons, 10 of which he spent in Green Bay. Nelson is third in Packers history in receptions.

Javier Báez hit two of Chicago's four homers as the Cubs closed out a 6-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

 

The Dodgers blanked the Cardinals 8-0. 

 

Tim Anderson had three hits and scored twice, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 7-4.

 

Chicago Bears rookie running back David Montgomery will get his first chance to test his skills against NFL players on Thursday in the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. The third-round draft pick out of Iowa State hasn't had much chance to run against live tackling in camp but has been learning the passing game in the Bears' offense.

Chase Elliott Wins at Watkins Glen for Second Year in a Row

The Cubs completed a big three-game sweep of the Brewers as Jason Heyward drove in three runs and Yu Darvish pitched five effective innings in a 7-2 victory

 

The Cardinals were 4-2 losers in Oakland.

 

Leury (lay-OOR’-ee) Garcia belted a grand slam and Eloy (EE’-loy) Jiménez added a three-run shot as the White Sox beat the Phillies 10-5.

 

E.I. Baseball

The Game 7 Legacy beat the Paxton Swedes 6-4 in game 1 at Buckley to advance to take on the Dutchmasters. The Dutchmasters won 4-2 and advanced to next weekend’s best of 3 Championship series against Royal. Royal defeated Gifford Flatville 11-1 after Gifford Flatville def El Paso earlier.

 

It was deja vu for Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. at Watkins Glen on Sunday.

Elliott earned his second straight victory at the course, once again holding off Truex to become the first repeat winner at The Glen since Marcos Ambrose in 2011-12. It was a two-car race for more than half the 220.5-mile distance and the entire final 40 laps. Elliott started from the pole and led 80 of 90 laps in snapping a long slump. Denny Hamlin was third, followed by Erik Jones and Ryan Blaney.

Cardinals Regain Lead in NL Central

The Cardinals rolled to an 8-0 rout of the Cubs to regain a one-game lead over Chicago atop the NL Central. Matt Wieters (WEE’-turz) belted a three-run homer to back Jack Flaherty, who allowed just one hit while striking out nine over seven innings

 

The Mets blanked the White Sox, 4-0.

The regular season champions are the Buckley Dutchmasters.  The winner of the Dick Franzen Batting award is Gifford Flatville’s Storm Joop. Joop was also given the Ralph Loschen Most outstanding player award. Cade Sestak of Gifford Flatville was selected as the winner of the Virgil Scheiwe award for most outstanding pitcher The Post season tournament begins on Sunday in Buckley and Gifford. The Buckley Dutchmasters are the number one seed and the number 2 seed is the Royal Giants. All games in the post season are 9 inning contests. In Buckley at 1 on Sunday, its Game 7 and the Paxton Swedes. The winner to take on Buckley in game 2. In Gifford on Sunday,  Gifford-Flatville takes on El Paso with the winner to take on Royal in game two.

The winners of the two sites meet the following weekend with a best of 3 game series to decide the tournament winner.
