(Indianapolis–jc)   Marcus Ericsson won the 106th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge in a wild scramble after a late red flag Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, earning his first career victory in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Ericsson, from Kumla, Sweden, won under caution in the No. 8 Huski Chocolate Chip Ganassi Racing Honda after Sage Karam crashed in Turn 2 on the final lap. Before the race-ending incident, Ericsson and Pato O’Ward were locked in a fantastic duel for the lead after the restart with two laps to go after the red flag, snaking around the 2.5-mile oval in one of the most breathtaking finishes in the century-plus history of the race.

Ryan Blaney wins the All-Star Race at Texas

(Undated–jc) The Tuscola Lady Warriors are the state champions in the 1-A state track meet finals over the weekend.  St Joe Ogdens Savannah Franzen finished 6th overall in the girls 1600. Paxton Buckley Loda’s Trixie Johnson finished 4th in the 800 in the state finals at Charleston. The St Joe Ogdgen 4 by 400 relay finished 9th at state, The St Joe Ogden girls 4 by 800 relay of Ava Knap, Cloe Burkhalter, Kaitlyn Ingram and Savannah Franzen finished 4th at state. Peyton Carter of St Joe Ogden finished 8th in the pole vault.

In the girls 2-A State at Charleston, Kayla  Nelson of Unity finished 6th in the 200 meter final. Rantoul’s Briana Dixon was 2nd in the 100  meter 2-A Hurdles. Dixon also finished 4th in the 300 meter hurdles. Unity’s Jospephine Cler, Emily Decker, Ashlyn Denney and  Adriana Pruitt finished 4th in the 4 by 800 relay finals. Briana Dixon of Rantoul finished 2nd in the high jump

Justin Thomas was seven shots back of the lead heading into the final round of the PGA Championship before firing a 3 under par 67 to put himself into playoff position with Will Zalatoris. Thomas then went on to win the 3 hole playoff to earn him his second major, after winning the Championship in 2017.

(East Peoria–jc)  –  Congratulations to the Cissna Park 8th grade Lady Wildcats Track Team as they are the State Champions. The team totaled 41 and a half points

Addison Lucht finished number 1 in the shot put while teammate Lauryn Hamrick finished 8th. Emily Karas was 12th in the 1600 meter run for Cissna Park. The 4 by 200 meter run team of Sophie Duis, Chloe Wagner Josie Nuekomnn and Annika Stadeli finished 2nd at state on Saturday. 

Rantoul St Malachy’s Aubrey Thompson finished 6th in the 100 Meter Hurdles.

The Cissna Park Boys 7th grade Track team finished 7th in state competition on Saturday. Cissna Park 7th grader Skylar Estay is the class 1A State Champion in the 110 hurdles.

The PBL Lady Panthers are sending several athletes to the State meet after taking 4th place in the Sectional held at Bloomington Central Catholic. Trixie Johnson won the 800 meter run, Lillie Frichtl took second in the 100, Maisy Johnson took second in the High Jump, Bailey Luebchow took second in the Pole Vault, and the 1600 relay team consisting of Trixie Johnson, Maisy Johnson, Lillie Frichtl and Lorena Arnett will move on. Savannah Shumate of GCMS placed first in Discus and will also advance to the state meet.

(Champaign-jm) – The University of Illinois announced it does not intend to add Division I men's ice hockey as a sport after exploring the possibility.  Director of Athletics Josh Whitman said Monday the school will not add hockey, barring an unforeseen change. The U of I Division of Intercollegiate Athletics is discontinuing proactive efforts to pursue the sport, effective immediately.

(Gibson City-jm) – The GCMS Lady Falcons will have a new basketball coach. Ross Harden will take over for Keri Dornsbusch who resigned.

 

(Paxton-jm) – PBL Senior Addison Oyer will continue her volleyball career at the collegiate level. Oyer signed her letter of intent to play volleyball at Millikin University in Decatur. During her career at PBL High School, Oyer had a program-record 1,455 kills while holding the school’s single-season and single-match records in kills as well.

 

(Undated-jm) – Three members of the Fighting Illini football team heard their names called during the NFL draft over the weekend. Safety Kerby Joseph was drafted in the third round to the Detroit Lions.  Center Doug Kramer was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round. Offensive Tackle Vederian Lowe was also drafted in the sixth round to the Minnesota Vikings. 

 

(Chicago-dg)-The Chicago Bears are set to release Quarterback Nick Foles. The Bears were ready to try and make a trade during the draft but nothing emerged. Foles started one game last year for the Bears.
