Champaign-- Illinois Mens Basketball Head Coach Brad Underwood announced Thursday that Bernard Kouma has signed a Big Ten Tender of Financial Aid with the University of Illinois. Kouma is a 6-foot-10, 240-pound frontcourt player from N'Djamena, Chad. He moved to the United States for high school, currently living in the Bronx while attending Our Savior Lutheran school. Kouma averaged 14.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks this past season as a senior, earning Great Atlantic Conference North Division I second-team accolades. He had a standout performance at the Kyrie Irving Invitational at Barclays Center, totaling game highs of 29 points and 17 rebounds against Roselle Catholic

Cubs and Cardinals set to Play in London in 2020

HOUSTON (AP) — Kyle Hendricks pitched eight strong innings, Kyle Schwarber homered for the second straight game and Kris Bryant added a solo shot in his return to the lineup to help the Chicago Cubs avoid a sweep with a 2-1 win over the Houston Astros.

 

The Phillies beat the Cardinals 11-4.

 

José Abreu hit a three-run homer, Yoán Moncada also connected and the White Sox swept a three-game series for the first time this season with an 8-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

 

NEW YORK (AP) — The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals are set to play at London next season in a two-game series at West Ham's Olympic Stadium on June 13 and 14. St. Louis will be the home team for both games, according to a draft of the 2020 preliminary schedule obtained by The Associated Press.

CHICAGO (AP) — Lucas Giolito struck out 10 while winning his fifth straight start and the Chicago White Sox posted their second victory of the day, beating the Kansas City Royals 4-3.

 

The Fighting Illini leave today for Oxford, Mississippi as they will take on Clemson, Friday in the NCAA Tournament.

 

Former Cub and Batting Champ Bill Buckner Has Died

The White Sox and Royals were tied 1-1 in the fifth inning when their game was suspended by rain.

 

BOSTON (AP) _ Bill Buckner was among the finest hitters in his day, but he also committed one of the most memorable errors in World Series history. Buckner’s family said in a statement that the former outfielder and first baseman died Monday at 69 following a long battle with dementia. 

Buckner was a 1981 All-Star and a 1980 batting champion while with the Chicago Cubs. But he is better known as the first baseman who allowed Mookie Wilson’s slow roller to go underneath his glove to end Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, allowing the Mets to beat the Red Sox before capturing the Fall Classic in seven games.

Tony Stewart headlines a Joe Gibbs racing trio that has been elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The three-time Cup Series champion will be inducted alongside car owner Joe Gibbs and former teammate Bobby Labonte (lah-BAHN’-tee) . Driver Buddy Baker and mechanic Waddell Wilson were also voted in. Stewart won 49 Cup Series races during his 17-year NASCAR career.

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois (AP) —Illinois defensive end Bobby Roundtree was speaking, eating and sitting up after severely injuring his spine in a weekend swimming accident near his Florida home, a school spokesman said Monday. Roundtree had surgery at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor on Sunday, a day after the accident. Illinois coach Lovie Smith and assistants went to Florida.

Brooks Koepka Wins PGA Championship for Second Year in a Row

WASHINGTON (AP) — Anthony Rizzo homered, Albert Almora Jr. had three hits and the Chicago Cubs held off the Washington Nationals for a 6-5 victory.

 

The Texas Rangers had a two-run rally in the 10th inning for a 5-4 walk-off win against the Cardinals.

 

The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2.

 

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) _ Brooks Koepka (KEHP’-kuh) was able to win the PGA Championship for the second straight year, but he certainly made things interesting after dominating the first three rounds. Koepka carried a hefty seven-stroke advantage into the final round before completing a two-shot victory over Dustin Johnson. Koepka closed with a 4-over 74 that included four straight bogeys on the back nine.

Larson wasn't part of the elite field when the day began, racing his way in, by winning the Monster Energy Open earlier at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Kevin Harvick was second, Kyle Busch was third and Joey Logano was fourth.

CHICAGO (AP) — Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo homered and the Chicago Cubs won for the 10th time in 11 games, beating the Miami Marlins 4-1. The Cubs have homered in 15 straight games, matching their best run since the 2002 season.

 

Marcell Ozuna drove in four runs and Dexter Fowler had three RBIs, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 17-4 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Assistant trainer Riley Mott has confirmed to The Associated Press that Country House will not run in the May 18 Preakness. Trainer Bill Mott says that the Kentucky Derby longshot developed a cough and was "acting like he's going to get sick." Country House went off at 65-1 in the Derby and was credited with the victory following the disqualification of race winner Maximum Security.

Monster Energy Race at Dover Postponed Until Today

Kris Bryant belted his fourth career grand slam while the Cubs were tacking on six runs in the eighth inning of their seventh straight win, a 13-5 win over the Cardinals. Willson Contreras, Anthony Rizzo and David Bote each drove in two runs as Chicago leapfrogged the Cardinals for first place in the NL Central.

 

Boston won for the sixth time in seven games as the Red Sox beat the White Sox 9-2.

 

It was a little chilly Friday night but the track was in great shape as racing got underway at the Farmer City Raceway. Brian Shirley won the Late Model feature, Tyler Nicely won in Modifieds, Aaron Heck won Pro Lates, Jeremy Nichols won Street Stocks and David Lauritson won Hornets. This week is the Farmer City 74.


 

DOVER, Del. (AP) — The NASCAR Cup race at Dover International Speedway has been postponed by rain and will be run today. Chase Elliott is the pole-sitter for the race after winning last week at Talladega, won the pole and will lead the field to green at 12:01 p.m. Dover hasn't held a Monday race since 2007.

Sox win, Cards lose

The Washington Nationals beat the Cardinals, 2-1.

 

The White Sox notched their second straight walk-off win as Nicky Delmonico hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give them a 6-4 victory over the Red Sox.

Miles Mikolas (MY'-koh-lahs) outpitched Max Scherzer and Marcell Ozuna (oh-ZOO'-nah) had three hits as the Cardinals dumped the Nationals, 5-1.

 

The Orioles beat the White Sox, 5-4 in Game 1 of a twinbill.

The White Sox salvaged a split of their double header by downing the O's, 7-6 on Yonder Alonso's two-run single with two out in the ninth inning.

 

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have exercised their fifth-year option on linebacker Leonard Floyd, locking him up through the 2020 season. The move was expected after Floyd played in all 16 regular-season games last season and recorded four sacks and had a 19-yard interception return for a touchdown in Week 9 at Buffalo.

 

 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky Derby favorite Omaha Beach has been scratched from Saturday's race because of a breathing problem. The colt from Southern California was made the 4-1 early favorite for Saturday's 145th Derby. Omaha Beach galloped Wednesday morning without any problem and trainer Richard Mandella said everything was fine, but that changed by late afternoon. The role of likely favorite now falls to Game Winner, who was the 5-1 second choice.
