Paul Goldschmidt has homers in seven of the Cardinals’ last eight games after supplying the go-ahead blast in a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. 

 

The Mets extended their winning streak to a season-high five straight by earning a 5-2 triumph over the White Sox.

(Watseka--jc)   The Post 432 Legion  team is in the state tournament starting tomorrow in Milan. The local baseball team beat Eureka to win the District 4 championship. Players on the team are from Donovan, Milford, Paxton Buckley Loda and Gibson City Melvin Sibley.

(Undated--jc) The 20-19 E I Baseball regular season is complete. The regular season champions are the Buckley Dutchmasters.  The winner of the Dick Franzen Batting award is Gifford Flatville’s Storm Joop. The Post season tournament begins on Sunday in Buckley and Gifford. The Buckley Dutchmasters are the number one seed and the number 2 seed is the Royal Giants. All games in the post season are 9 inning contests. In Buckley at 1 on Sunday, its Game 7 and the Paxton Swedes. The winner to take on Buckley in game 2. In Gifford on Sunday,  Gifford-Flatville takes on El Paso with the winner to take on Royal in game two.

The winners of the two sites meet the following weekend with a best of 3 game series to decide the tournament winner.

The Cubs Cards and Sox were all off yesterday.

 

Tonight the Cubs are at the Cardinals and the Mets are at the White Sox.

 

Elliott Fry and Eddy Pineiro alternate day by day performing the kicking duties for the Chicago Bears as they seek to replace former kicker Cody Parkey. Both have shown strong, accurate legs in the first practices, hitting from 60 yards or longer.

 

Southern California grad transfer officially becomes an Illini. Trevon Sidney was officially added to the roster on Monday. The wide receiver will wear number 5 and is expected to make an immediate impact on offence. 

Denny Hamlin Wins at Pocono

The Chicago Cubs have regained their share of first place in the National League Central by salvaging the finale of their three-game series in Milwaukee. Kyle Schwarber was the hitting star in the Cubs’ 11-4 mauling of the Brewers, hitting a grand slam and a three-run homer.

 

The Cardinals were 6-2 losers to the Astros. 

 

The Twins beat the White Sox 11-1.

 

E. I. Baseball

Tyler Jones and Andy Davis combined for a no hitter in game 1 as the Buckley Dutchmasters beat Game 7 Legacy 6-0. The Dutchamsters won game 2 with a score of 14-1 and clinched the E.I Regular Season title.

 

The Paxton Swedes split with Gifford Flatville with Paxton taking the first game 8-5 and Gifford Flatville taking the second game 16-5.

 

Royal took 2 from El Paso 8-1 and 9-4.

 

Next week’s tournament will be on Sunday with the #1 and #2 seeds hosting.

#1 will play the winner of #4 and #5, while #2 seed will play the winner of #3 and #6.

 

NASCAR

Denny Hamlin had enough fuel to pull away off the final restart in an overtime finish for his fifth victory at Pocono Raceway. Hamlin raced to his third victory of the season and 34th overall in NASCAR Cup Series race. Hamlin held off teammate Erik Jones, who needed a win to secure a spot in the playoffs. Martin Truex Jr. was third, followed by William Bryon and Kyle Larson.

Cards Join Cubs Atop the NL Central with Win Over Pirates

St. Louis has pulled even with Chicago atop the NL Central after Paul Goldschmidt homered in the Cardinals’ fifth straight win, 6-3 at Pittsburgh.

 

Minnesota routed the White Sox 10-3.

Paul DeJong (deh-YUHNG’) was 4-for-4 with three home runs and five RBIs in the Cardinals’ 14-8 pounding of the Pirates. 

 

The Miami Marlins won their second straight game, beating the Chicago White Sox 2-0.

 

The Cubs have optioned shortstop Addison Russell to Triple-A Iowa to make room for catcher Willson Contreras, who was activated from the 10-day injured list.

UNDATED (AP) — Mike Montgomery was traded from the Cubs to Kansas City, but the left-hander's place in Chicago history is secure. Montgomery was on the mound for the final out of the 2016 World Series, when the Cubs beat Cleveland in Game 7 to end their 108-year title drought.

 

DECATUR, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears begin training camp for their 100th season trying to solve an old problem at kicker, and a new one with safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix out due to a knee sprain. Practices begin Friday as the dominant Bears defense tries to adjust to a new coordinator in Chuck Pagano.

CHICAGO (AP) — Yu Darvish finally had a reason to celebrate at Wrigley Field.

Darvish tossed six innings of two-hit, shutout ball to earn his first win at the iconic ballpark as a Cub and lead Chicago past the Cincinnati Reds 5-2

(Urbana--jc)-The University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, Wednesday, announced a gift of 250 thousand dollars from Fighting Illini football great and eight-year NFL veteran Corey Liuget. Liuget's gift will go toward the completion of the Henry Dale and Betty Smith Football Center, which will feature the naming of the players lounge as the Corey Liuget Players’ Lounge. 

 

UNDATED (AP) _ Next month, more than 50,000 former college athletes will begin collecting portions of a $208 million class-action settlement paid by the NCAA. It is part of a case that challenged the association's caps on compensation.

Hagens Berman, the law firm representing the plaintiffs, says 53,748 Bowl Subdivision football players and Division I men's and women's basketball players who competed between 2010 to 2017 are eligible to receive compensation.

The Pirates beat the Cardinals, 3-1.

 

 The Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White sox 11-0. 


 

Coming off a second consecutive Class 1A State Championship, Danville Schlarman senior Capria Brown has had many offers to continue her basketball career at the college level including Xavier, Michigan and Penn St.. But one offer came from a University closer to home. Brown was offered a scholarship from Illinois last week. She said she was honored and blessed at Illinois’ offer.

Tyler O'Neill hit two homers and Miles Mikolas (MY’-koh-las) scattered eight hits in the Cardinals’ first complete game of the season, a 7-0 shutout of the Pirates. 

 

The Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2.

 

 

The Maxwell Award named Illinois senior running back Reggie Corbin to its watch list, the award committee announced. It is the first career watch list honor for Corbin.The Maxwell Football Club presents the Maxwell Award for the College Player of the Year. The award is presented in honor of Robert W. (Tiny) Maxwell, legendary college player, official and sports columnist.

The Athletics earned a 3-2 win over the White Sox.

Kurt Busch earned his first win of the season by outracing his younger brother in overtime at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday. Joey Logano and Kyle Busch lined up side-by-side on the restart for what was expected to be a race for the victory, but both Erik Jones and Kurt Busch shoved their cars into the mix for an intense final two laps. The Busch brothers touched as they raced for the lead, both cars wiggled, and it appeared Kurt Busch was headed into the wall. But he recovered to squeeze past his brother right before the checkered flag.

Steve Stricker Hits a Hole in One at Bridgestone Senior Players Championship

Baseball's All-Star Game had a record low television rating of 5.0 with an 11 share on Fox, according to Nielsen Media Research. That is down from the previous record low rating of 5.2 and 8.69 million viewers for the AL's 8-6, 10-inning victory last year.

 

The Cardinals have placed catcher Yadier (YAH’-dee-ehr) Molina on the injured list with a strained right thumb. The Cardinals also activated infielder Matt Carpenter, who has been sidelined since June 29 with a lower back strain. 

 

ARKON, Ohio (AP) _ Steve Stricker was the leader when the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship when the first round was suspended for the day due to lightning. Stricker had a hole-in-one on the 184-yard, par-3 seventh and was 5 under for the day when he was ordered off the course.

The National League Central is Anyone's to Win

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The National League Central is providing Major League Baseball with a needed dose of pennant fever. All five teams are separated by just 4 1/2 games coming out of the All-Star break. The other five divisions have at least a 5 1/2-game gap between first and second. Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon says the division is tight because all five teams are trying to win. That includes upstart Cincinnati and resilient Pittsburgh, which are in the thick of the race with the Cubs, Milwaukee and St. Louis.

 

CHICAGO (AP) — Work crews have begun extending the protective netting to the foul poles at Guaranteed Rate Field, a step the Chicago White Sox are taking following a couple of high-profile injuries this season. The White Sox became the first major league team to take the step after a liner by Cubs outfielder Albert Almora Jr. struck a 4-year-old girl in Houston in May. A woman was hit by a foul ball off the bat of White Sox slugger Eloy Jiménez in Chicago on June 10.

 

American League Wins All-Star Game 4-3

CLEVELAND (AP) _ Make it seven straight wins for the American League in the All-Star Game. Joey Gallo’s solo homer in the seventh inning gave the AL a 4-1 lead before the junior circuit hung on for a 4-3 win over the National League in Cleveland. Indians hurler and game MVP Shane Bieber gave the local fans a thrill by striking out the side in the fifth.

 

Mets Rookie, Pete Alonso Wins Home Run Derby

CLEVELAND (AP) _ Pete Alonso didn’t have the most round-trippers in the Home Run Derby on Monday, but he hit them when it mattered.

The New York Mets rookie first baseman is $1 million richer after defeating Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the final.Guerrero lost the derby despite hitting a record 91 home runs in the three rounds compared to 57 by the winner.

 

The All Star  Game in Cleveland begins at 6:30 tonight.

Justin Haley Earns NASCAR Win in Shortened Race

MLB

Iván Nova pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning for his first home win in eight tries, Eloy Jiménez and José Abreu homered, and the Chicago White Sox beat the crosstown Cubs 3-1 to salvage a two-game split. 

 

The Giants beat the Cardinals 1-0.

The Buckley Dutchmasters earned 2 wins via forfeit from the El Paso Warriors.

 

The Royal Giants earned a 2 game sweep over the Paxton Swedes 6-5 and 10-4.

 

Game 7 Legacy and the Gifford Gifflats split a double header. Game 7 won the first game 2-1 and Gifford Flatville won the second game 9-2.

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ NASCAR driver Justin Haley has earned a victory in just his third career Cup start. Haley won the rain-postponed, rain-shortened race at Daytona, inheriting the lead after a 17-car accident decimated the field and before a lightning strike forced NASCAR to stop the race.

Kris Bryant hit his 17th homer and the Cubs ended a four-game losing streak by routing the Pirates, 11-3.

 

Dexter Fowler slammed a two-run homer and Matt Wieters (WEE’-turz) provided a solo shot in the Cardinals’ 5-4 win at Seattle. 

 

The Tigers beat the White Sox 11-5.

Cubs and Cards Lose, Sox Postponed

The Pirates beat the Cubs 5-1.

 

The Seattle Mariners beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4. 

 

The game between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers has been postponed by rain. It will be made up on Sept. 27 as part of a straight doubleheader.

 

MBL Mourns the Loss of Angels Pitcher Tyler Skaggs, 27

MLB

The Pirates beat up on the Cubs 18-5. 

 

Major League Baseball has been rocked by the sudden death of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs at age 27. Skaggs was with the team in Texas when he was found unresponsive in his hotel room yesterday. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they are investigating, but no foul play is suspected at this time.

The Reds beat  the Cubs, 8-6.

 

The Cardinals beat the Padres, 5-3 on Matt Wieters’ two-run homer in the 11th inning.

 

Lucas Giolito picked up his major league-leading 11th victory by allowing one hit over five innings of the White Sox’ 4-3 victory against the Twins.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Steve Stricker’s U.S. Senior Open debut was one for the record book. He closed with a 1-under 69 for a six-stroke victory over Jerry Kelly and David Toms. Stricker set the 72-hole tournament record with a 19-under 261, three better than the previous mark set by Kenny Perry at Salem Country Club two years ago.


 

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) _ Alex Bowman has raced to his first career NASCAR Cup Series victory, leading a Hendrick Motorsports performance that saw the team place four drivers among the top 11. Kyle Larson finished second followed by Joey Logano,Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski.
