(Champaign–jc)  Number 23 Illinois began the second year of the Shauna Green era in Champaign with a resounding 121-60 victory over Truman State in the team's lone exhibition game of the 2023-24 campaign. Green used the preseason game to give playing time to all 14 players, while 12 different scorers registered at least one point in the blowout victory, including eight Illini in double figures.  Genesis Bryant led the way with 18 points, which included three 3-pointers, while she also dished out four assists, made one steal, and played a team-high 24 minutes. Kendall Bostic tallied a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds Jada Peebles knocked down three triples en route to scoring 15 points off the bench.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois will open the 2023-24 season at No. 25 in the Associated Press Top 25. Head Coach Brad Underwood's Illini appear in the AP preseason rankings for the fourth year in a row, which marks the longest streak in school history. Illinois started at No. 8 in 2020-21, No. 11 in 2021-22, and No. 23 in 2022-23. It is the 20th time in program history, meanwhile, that the Illini are ranked in the AP preseason poll. Illinois is one of just three Big Ten teams ranked in the preseason poll, along with No. 3 Purdue and No. 4 Michigan State. Illinois also will play No. 1 Kansas in a charity exhibition game Oct. 29 at State Farm Center. Illinois-Kansas tickets are on sale now and available at a newly introduced price of just $40, to go along with $85. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – For the first time in Illinois women's basketball program history, a Fighting Illini player has been named to the Nancy Lieberman Top-20 Preseason Watch List as Makira Cook was announced as an honoree on Monday. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) have given the award annually since 2000 to the top point guard in the country.   Cook is a senior in her second year at Illinois and fourth season under Shauna Green. She averaged a team-best 18.3 points per game and dished out 125 assists while starting all 30 games last year for the Illini.

(Chicago-dg)-Football Hall of Fame Linebacker Dick Butkus has died. Butkus was a feared player for the ferocious hits he put on opponents. Butkus was an 8 time pro bowler for the Chicago Bears. He was also a two time All American at Illinois and helped the Illini win the Rose Bowl in 1963. 

Former Fighting Illini great quarterback Juice Williams will serve as the team's honorary captain for tonight's matchup with the Nebraska Cornhuskers at Memorial Stadium. Williams started 44 games for the Fighting Illini from 2006-09 on his way to becoming one of Illinois' all-time great quarterbacks. His 2,557 rushing yards are the most ever by an Illini quarterback and he ranks fourth in program history with 8,037 passing yards. Williams led Illinois to one of the biggest upsets in program history when he threw for 140 yards and rushed for 70 yards in a win at #1 Ohio State in 2007.  Kick off tonight is at 7pm

(West Lafayette–jc) Wednesday night's Big Ten match at Holloway Gymnasium resulted in a loss for Illinois as the Fighting Illini fell in straight sets to #19 Purdue. With the loss, the Illini dropped to 7-8 on the year and 2-3 in conference play. The ranked Boilermakers improved to 9-5 overall and 3-2 against league opponents. Raina Terry paced the Illini with 12 kills. The senior, alongside Kennedy Collins, posted a squad-best four blocks. Brooke Mosher tallied 25 assists, while Caroline Barnes added 14 digs.
