Among the first week matchups on Friday August 30th includes the Panthers of Paxton Buckley Loda in a battle with Ford County foe and 2-time State Champion Gibson City Melvin Sibley in Gibson City. The Rantoul Eagles are on the road in week one at Prairie Central in Fairbury. It’s the battle of the Saints schools in week one as St Joe Odgen is at home against St Thomas More. Milford-Cissna Park, fresh off their State Championship are home against Lake Forest Academy in Milford. Iroquois West is home against Bismark Henning in Gilman.


 

(Urbana--jc)  -- Illinois volleyball's Ali Bastianelli has been nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, the organization announced on Wednesday.  

Established in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers. Bastianelli is one of a record 585 female college athletes that have been nominated by NCAA member schools for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year award. The nominees competed in 23 different sports across all three NCAA divisions, including 262 from Division I, 131 from Division II and 192 from Division III. Multisport student-athletes account for 144 of the nominees.

Stephan Piscotty got a standing ovation from the St. Louis Faithful, as he made his way to the plate for his first appearance in St. Louis since being traded to the A’s. The Athletics beat the Cardinals, 7-3.

 

The Red Sox doubled up the White Sox 6-3.

Willson Contreras slammed a solo homer and drove in three as the Cubs won a matchup of NL division leaders, 8-3 over the Braves. 

 

The Red Sox were able to celebrate a 6-5 win over the White Sox with an infield single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.

 

St. Louis Cardinals closer Jordan Hicks has a torn elbow ligament, and may have to have Tommy John surgery.

Connor Gross threw a complete game shutout, striking out 13 and allowing only 2 hits as the Dutchmasters beat Game 7 Legacy 9-0.

Game 2 was postponed because of weather. It will be made up next Saturday in Lexington.

Martin Truex Jr. has won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway for the second straight year, comfortably holding off teammate Kyle Busch for his fourth victory of the season.  Ryan Blaney was third, followed by Matt DiBenedetto and Denny Hamlin.

It was no surprise that New Orleans Pelicans took Duke freshman forward Zion Williamson with the first overall pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft. The Chicago Bulls selected North Carolina guard Coby White with the seventh pick.

The Cardinals pulled out a 2-1 win against the Marlins on Paul Goldschmidt’s solo homer in the 11th inning.

 

The NBA draft is all about Zion Williamson. The draft begins tonight with the Duke freshman projected to go first overall to the New Orleans Pelicans. He was the biggest star the college level has seen in years, filling highlight reels with thunderous dunks and incomparable athleticism while becoming The Associated Press National Player of the Year. Murray State point guard Ja Morant and Duke high-scoring freshman forward RJ Barrett are projected to follow Williamson in the top three picks

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox plan to extend the protective netting all the way to the foul poles at Guaranteed Rate Field, becoming the first major league team to take such a step in the wake of a couple of high-profile fan injuries.

 

The Fighting Illini football team has added a quarterback to the roster. Former Michigan Quarterback Brandon Peters will have 2 years of eligibility as a graduate transfer. He joins 2 redshirt freshman and a true freshman as quarterback options.

The Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2.

 

The Cardinals managed just three hits and still beat the Mets, 4-3 on Paul Goldschmidt’s  two-run homer and Paul DeJong’s tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth inning.

(Undated--jc) -- The Gifflats of Gifford scored two runs in the top of the 9th inning on Sunday at Schiewe Field in Buckley to take the first game 3 to 2.  In game two, the Gifflats scored in the top of the first to take a one to nothing lead. The home Dutchmasters scored two in the bottom of the 2nd and took a comfortable lead into the 7th with a 7 run 5th inning. Gifford came back in the top of the 7th with 5 runs, but the Dutchmasters won game two 9 to 6.

 

The Paxton Swedes beat the El Paso Warriors 10-2 & 5-4.

 

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) _ Gary Woodland has captured his first major golf championship by holding off the two-time defending U.S. Open champion.

Woodland closed with a 30-foot putt for birdie to finish three strokes ahead of Brooks Koepka (KEHP’-kah) in the Open at Pebble Beach. The Kansas native shot a 2-under 69 on Sunday for a 13 under total.

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3.

 

Leury García hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh inning, and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the New York Yankees 5-4.

 

The Mets and Cardinals were tied 4-4 after 8 ½ innings before the game was suspended because of rain. Play will resume tonight before the Mets and Redbirds play their scheduled game.

The Marlins blasted the Cardinals, 9-0 to end a six-game losing streak.

 

St. Louis has reason to celebrate for the next few days after the Blues won the Stanley Cup for the first time since becoming an NHL franchise in 1967. Jordan Binnington stopped 32 shots and the Blues took Game 7 of the final by defeating the Bruins, 4-1 in Boston.

The Colorado Rockies won their 10th straight at home by beating the Cubs 10-3.

 

Rookie Dakota Hudson allowed one run in a career-high seven innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 7-1.

 

Welington Castillo hit a grand slam and top rookie Eloy Jiménez homered at home for the first time, powering the Chicago White Sox to a 7-5 win over the Washington Nationals.

 

Illini Men’s Basketball coach Brad Underwood has filled another roster spot for 2019-2020 season. Benjamin Bosmans Verdonk a 6-7 forward from Belgium has officially signed. He adds more length and size in the front court. Underwood said that he is a versatile player that can handle the ball, shoot and pass. He joins big men Kofi Cockburn and Bernard Kouma.

The Rockies came back from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Cubs 6-5.

 

Michael Wacha threw six scoreless innings in a 4-1 victory at Miami.

 

The Nationals beat the White Sox 12-1.

 

 

The IHSA has approved changes to the way the boys and girls state tournament  will be played. Beginning in 2021, all classes of girls will be played in a 3 day period and the boys will do the same the following week. Venues will have to put bids in to host the tournaments in the new format.

 

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP)  Joey Logano has earned his second NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season, fending off Kurt Busch and Martin Truex Jr. in overtime at Michigan International Speedway.

Logano was trying to hold on to a dwindling lead over Truex and Busch with five laps remaining before Erik Jones went into the grass, prompting a caution flag that forced overtime. It was a dominant visit to Michigan for Logano, who won the pole in qualifying and then led a track-record 163 laps in the race.

CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Hendricks tossed one-run ball over seven innings to continue his dominance over St. Louis, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 5-1 win over the Cardinals.

URBANA, Ill. (AP) — A lawsuit is accusing the University of Illinois of violating its students' free-speech rights. Virginia-based Speech First filed the lawsuit last week against Illinois in U.S. District Court in Urbana. It accuses the university of squelching free speech by requiring "prior approval" for posting leaflets. It also claims the university uses bias response teams that intimidate students into silence. A spokeswoman says the university hasn't received official notice of the lawsuit.

 

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — A lawyer for a Chinese family attending the U.S. trial of an ex-University of Illinois student charged with killing their daughter says he has been explaining to them how the American justice system works. Wednesday is the third day of jury selection at Brendt Christensen's federal death-penalty trial. Attorney Steve Beckett says the  proceedings can be confusing and he tries to help the family "understand why things are happening."

(GIbson CIty--dg)  -- The Gibson City Through the Years Historical Walk is set for Sunday, July 2st, in the pavilion at Gibson City’s North Park, with proceeds going toward the city’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2021. The event features historical local characters and businesses being portrayed, including Dale W. McMillen from Central Soya, Stephen S. McCall from Gibson City Canning, Henry Hager from Hager Lumber, Elmo Meiners from M&W Gear and a lifeguard from the Gibson City pool. Tickets cost $10 each, with free entry for children age 15 and younger. Ticket sales start July 1 and are available for purchase at the Moyer District Library in Gibson City.

 

 

(Springfield--ba)-Officials are asking for the public’s cooperation in dealing with record breaking flooding along the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. Local leaders urge Illinoisans not to go on a sightseeing trip to see all the flooding, since it’s hard enough with road closings to get residents to their homes in some cases. (Paxton--jc)  -- Ford County Sheriff Mark Doran has released the activity numbers for his office. The Ford County Sheriff’s department  received just over 76 thousand 400 dollars in boarding prisoner fees for the month. Ford COunty police handed out 27 speeding tickets, handled 19 civil complaints, 8 welfare checks and three theft investigations.

 

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Will County officials say a developmentally disabled man wore a monster mask and played horror movie music when he stabbed a caretaker more than 30 times. Will County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Dan Jungles says 24-year-old Ederaldo Frantz allegedly was upset with the Plainfield Township group home caretaker because she took away his cellphone. Jungles says Frantz then went to his room, put on the mask Jungles described as "demonic" and started playing music from "Halloween." Jungles says Frantz grabbed a large butcher knife and stabbed the caretaker, who was hospitalized with deep puncture wounds. Frantz is charged with attempted murder and held on $500,000 bond. His attorney, Jordan Kielian of Joliet, said he had no comment pending a court-ordered evaluation to assess Frantz's fitness for trial.

FAIR OAKS, Ind. (AP) — Authorities are investigating alleged animal abuse after an animal rights group released graphic video showing workers kicking and throwing young calves at an Indiana dairy farm that's a popular destination for school field trips.Animal Recovery Mission said that an investigator for the Miami-based animal rights group secretly recorded the disturbing footage last year while working for several months at Fair Oaks Farms, which Food & Wine magazine has called the "Disneyland of agricultural tourism."

 

 

(Springfield--jc) -- In addition to math, science, reading, and gym class, Illinois high school students will soon have a financial aid requirement to graduate high school. Every high school senior in the state of Illinois will have to apply for federal student aid before they can graduate.  Lawmakers approved the new law last week. Gov. J.B. Pritzker says he will sign it. Under the plan, high schools in the state will be required to have seniors fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and if eligible a state student aid application as well.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Trucking Association  is pleased that lawmakers reached a bipartisan agreement to invest in the state’s highways & bridges, while also reducing fees on the trucking industry. The newly passed Capital Bill repeals a hidden sales tax on truck license plates known as the Commercial Distribution Fee, or CDF. The CDF adds as much as $400 to the cost of a semi-truck license plate, all of which was swept into the General Revenue Fund.  By repealing the CDF, Illinois has actually lowered fees on truck license plates, opening the door and inviting trucking companies to locate their company in the state. Savings to truckers should be 300 dollars with the new deal
