UNDATED (AP) — Harrison Bader hit his third home run of the season as St. Louis roughed up Washington starter Patrick Corbin during a six-run fifth inning as the Cardinals beat the Nationals 6-3 on Monday to start a four-game series.

Chase Elliott Wins at Talladega to Give Chevrolet First Win of the Season

PHOENIX (AP) — Ben Zobrist lined a two-run double in the 15th inning and the Chicago Cubs outlasted the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 in the second-longest game in Chase Field history.

CHICAGO (AP) — Reynaldo López struck out a career-high 14 and allowed two hits in six innings to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers for a sweep of an abbreviated two-game series.

 

The weather cooperated Friday night at the Farmer City Raceway. Brian Shirley won the Late Model Feature. Allen Weiser won Modifieds. Dakota Ewing won Pro Lates, Jeremy Nichols won Street Stocks, and Billy Knebel won B-Mods. This week is regular night of racing with Hornets. May 9th and 10th is the Farmer City 74 event.

 

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Chase Elliott has won the NASCAR Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway, giving Chevrolet its first victory of the season.

Elliott took the lead shortly after a restart with four laps to go and worked with three other Chevy drivers to hold off the rest of the field. He won for the first time since October. Elliott locked up a playoff spot and became the sixth different driver to win through 10 races this season. Hendrick Motorsports teammate Alex Bowman finished second, followed by rookies Ryan Preece and Daniel Hemric.

Several area basketball coaches will be honored by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association at an upcoming banquet. Boys Coaches selected were  Kevin Long of Cissna Park, Ryan Tompkins of GCMS. Girls coaches were Keri Dornbusch of GCMS, Scot Ghere of Ridgeview, Kevin Taylor of St. Joe Ogden, and Barry Bauer of Watseka. Joining those coaches were several area Jr. High Coaches. CHICAGO (AP) — David Bote hit a game-ending RBI single in the ninth inning, and the Chicago Cubs used a terrific performance by Tyler Chatwood to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1. Chatwood pitched six scoreless innings, and Javier Báez had two big hits for Chicago.

 

Paul Goldschmidt had a pair of hits and drove in two runs as the Cardinals took the rubber match of their three-game set with the Mets, 6-4. Dakota Hudson recorded his first major league win as a starting pitcher by allowing three runs and five hits over five innings.

 

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3.

 

The Farmer City Races were cancelled Friday night due to the track being too wet and NASCAR was off for the Easter Holiday. This week at the Farmer City Raceway it’s a regular show plus B-Mods and the Monster Energy Series is at Talladega on Sunday.

Ayo Dosunmu Staying at Illinois

Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 9-7.

 

Good news for the Fighting Illini nation.  Freshman Guard Ayo Dosunmu announced that he will stay at Illinois for his sophomore season instead of entering the NBA Draft. . He said he wants to stay and help coach Brad Underwood with some unfinished business and get Illinois to the dance.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Alex Diab, a senior on the Illinois men's gymnastics team, was named the 2019 Specialist of the Year, as announced Thursday night by the Collegiate Gymnastics Association. The award, which is given annually to the top gymnast on any one event, was one of four awards presented on Thursday

 

The Fighting Illini Baseball team plays host to Penn State. The three game set starts at 7-30. The series continues at 3 on Saturday with the final game at noon on Sunday at Illini Field.

 

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illinois softball team continues its four-game homestand this weekend as the Illini host No.22/19/23 Michigan in a three-game conference series on April 19-21. First pitch on Friday is set for 5 p.m. CT, 1 p.m. CT on Saturday and 2 p.m. CT on Sunday for a BTN-televised series finale.

The Illini will then head out for a five-game road swing - their final road trip of the regular season - starting with a doubleheader against No. 23/18/20 Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., on Tuesday (April 23), before traveling to Columbus, Ohio, for a three-game series at Ohio State on April 26-28.

Over the past 4 years, Bergman has 2 state championships with the St Thomas More program. Over his career, Bergman has 585 wins.

 

(Gifford--jc)  -- The Coaches versus Cancer event at Gordyville USA was another huge success. Initial reports say 46 thousand dollars was raised with more funds coming in for the event.  The efforts have raised over 650 thousand dollars since 2013 University of Illinois Coach Brad Underwood was among the coaches headlining the event near Gifford. This was the 7th annual event at Gordyville.

(AP) — A Michigan State University student is speaking publicly a year after suing the school, alleging three former men's basketball players raped her in 2015 and that counseling center staff discouraged her from reporting what happened.Twenty-two-year-old Bailey Kowalski said Thursday she came forward because she's "no longer afraid" and hopes to encourage other "silent survivors" to tell their stories. Kowalksi says she was inspired to go public after seeing victims of Larry Nassar speak out.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Final Four is set and things look different headed into Minneapolis. Virginia is the only No. 1 seed to make it through to the final weekend of the season. Joining the Cavaliers are No. 2 seed Michigan State, No. 3 seed Texas Tech and No. 5 seed Auburn. The Cavaliers and surging Tigers meet in Saturday's first national semifinal, followed by the Spartans and the defensive-minded Red Raiders.

 

Denny Hamlin raced to his second NASCAR Cup victory of the season, overcoming two penalties on pit road and missing the entry another time during green flag conditions. Hamlin led the final 12 laps. Clint Bowyer finished second, followed by Daniel Suarez, Erik Jones, and Jimmie Johnson.
