Gant's Second Major League Hit is His Second Homerun

MLB

Tommy La Stella hit his first pinch hit homerun as the Cubs beat the Braves 5-4 in a make up game.

 

Jon Gant’s second major league hit was his second major league homerun and he pitched shutout ball into the 6th inning as the Cardinals blanked the Pirates 5-0.

 

The Red Sox beat the White Sox 9-4.

The Cubs and Mets game was suspended with a 1-1 tie in the 9th inning.

 

Jack Flaherty had a sharp outing giving up just 4 hits in 7 innings, Jose Martinez and Tyler O’Neill each hit homeruns as the Cardinals beat the Pirates 5-2.

 

The Yankees beat the White Sox 5-4.

 

Mike Shildt is no longer the St. Louis Cardinals interim manager. The Cardinals took off the interim tag and promoted him to full-time manager through 2020 as a reward for leading the Cardinals into postseason contention.

Cardinals 2 1/2 Games out of First in NL Central

The Tigers beat the Cubs 2-1.

 

UNDATED (AP) —Yadier Molina and Marcell Ozuna belted two-run homers as the Cardinals earned a 5-2 win over the Dodgers. St. Louis is within 2 ½ games of first place in the NL Central.

 

The Twins beat the White Sox 5-2.

 

DETROIT (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have bolstered their struggling lineup by acquiring second baseman Daniel Murphy in a trade with the Washington Nationals. The Cubs also announced that right-hander Yu Darvish will miss the rest of the season after pitching just one inning in a rehab start.

 

The Cardinals have acquired 1st baseman Matt Adams in a trade with the Washington Nationals. Adams was in the Cardinals organization from 2012-2017.

The Chicago Bears number 8 draft pick Roquan Smith has finally signed. Smith had been the last unsigned pick of the 2018 draft. He immediately started working out with the team. It is unclear whether he will get to play in the Bears preseason game at Denver on Saturday.

David Bote came into the bottom of the ninth as pinch hitter with the bases loaded and the Cubs trailing the Nationals 3-0. With 2 outs he played the hero smacking a game winning grand slam to lead the Cubs to a 4-3 win.

 

Tyson Ross won his Cardinal debut as the Cardinals won for the 5th time in a row as they beat the Royals 8-2.

 

The White Sox gave it their best down 9-1 in the eighth inning but it wasn’t enough as the Indians came out on top 9-7.

 

E. I. Baseball

The Paxton Swedes and Royal Giants went three games in the E. I. Championship Series. Paxton won on Game 1 on Saturday 4-3. The Giants came from behind in the 9th inning to take the Game 2, 4-3. Then they won the 3rd game 10-2.

 

PGA Championship

Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods battled back and forth on the final day but it was Koepka who would prevail with a 2 stroke lead over Tiger Woods to win the PGA Championship.

 

Friday night at the Farmer City Races Mike Spatola won the Late Model Feature, Dakota Ewing won Pro Lates, Ray Bollinger won in Modifieds, Jason Maier won the Street Stock event and Adam Webb won in Hornets.

 

NASCAR

Kevin Harvick easily won at Michigan breaking a tie among the top 3 with his 7th win of the season. Brad Keselowski was second followed by Kyle Busch, Austin Dillon and Ryan Blaney.

The Chicago Blackhawks have announced that former star Stan Mikita has died at the age of 78. Mikita played for 22 seasons for the Blackhawks and helped them win the Stanley Cup in 1961 He is the team’s career leader for assists, points, and games played.

Tonight at the Farmer City Races it’s the What Up Dog 40 as the Midwest Street Stocks Championship comes to town to with a thousand dollars up from grabs. Then catch the best in Late Models, Pro Lates and Modifieds. Gates open at 4pm. Hot laps at 6:30 with racing to begin around 7:30.

 

On Saturday morning it’s our monthly Live Action Auction beginning around 8am. Bid, Buy and Save on gift certificates from area businesses.

 

Saturday Afternoon its Xfinity racing from Watkins Glen at 1:30.

 

Then it’s Summer Fun Tour Stop #15 as we help kick off the Ford County Relay for Life in North Park in Gibson City from 4:30 -5:30

 

On Sunday it’s the Monster Energy Go Bowling at the Glen NASCAR Race with a 12:30 start time.

Cole Hamels gave up 1 unearned run over 5 innings in his Chicago Cubs debut and Wilson Contreras had 3 hits including a homerun as the Cubs beat the Pirates 9-2.

 

Rookie Tyler O’Neill hit a tiebreaking pinch single in the 6th inning and 5 rookie relievers allowed just 1 run over 6 ? innings as the Cardinals beat the Rockies 6-3.

 

The Royals pounded the  the White Sox 10-5.

 

On Friday the Fighting Illini football team will take the field at 3pm for it’s first official practice. Training camp will take place at the Campus Rec Fields and is open to the pubic and free to attend.

The Pirates edged the Cubs 5-4.

 

The Rockies doubled up the Cardinals 6-3.

 

The Royals beat the White Sox 4-2.

 

The Cubs and Cardinals made some minor moves as the trade deadline approached yesterday. The Cubs got relief pitcher Brandon Kintzler from the Nationals in exchange for Relief Pitcher John Romero.

 

The Cardinals made a surprising move in trading away center fielder Tommy Pham to the Tampa Bay Rays in return for a couple of prospects. They also trade Outfielder Oscar Mercado to the Indians for outfield prospects.
