Washington has a World Series championship for the first time since the 1924 Senators beat the New York Giants. Anthony Rendon (rehn-DOHN’) and Howie Kendrick belted huge home runs in the seventh inning as the Nationals rallied to take Game 7, 6-2 over the Astros in Houston. Winning pitcher Patrick Corbin gave the Nats three solid innings of shutout relief to close out a series in which the road team won every game.

The Chargers came away with a 17-16 triumph over the Bears when Chicago kicker Eddy Pineiro (pihn-YAYR'-oh) missed a 41-yard field goal as time expired.

The Packers are 7-1 after Aaron Rodgers threw for 305 yards and three TDs in a 31-24 victory over the stumbling Chiefs. 

 

Indianapolis was able to pull out a 15-13 win over Denver on Adam Vinatieri’s 51-yard field goal with 22 seconds to play.

Blackhawks end a four-game skid with a 5-1 win over the Kings. 

 

Cross Country

The PBL Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams have advances to the sectionals. Ryder James came in first at the Tuscola Regional in leading the boys to a 3rd place finish. Maddie Royer led the girls team at 12th overall for a 6th place finish.

(Undated--jc)  The latest IHSA football polls are out and Lincoln Way High School is tops in Class 8-A. Chicago Mount Carmel leads 7-A and Chatham Glenwood is tops in 6-A. Number 1 in 5-A is East St Louis with Rochester tops in 4-A. Unity,  Kankakee Bishop MacNamara and Prairie Central are also receiving votes in 4-A. The Williamsville Bullets lead 3-A and Fieldcrest’s Knights are in the number 1 spot in 2-A. Central Clifton is second in 2-A with the Gibson City Melvin Sibley Falcons remaining in at number 4. Number 8 is Bismark-Henning.  Lena-Winslow leads 1-A with Arcola and Tuscola in the also receiving votes category.

The PBL Jr. High Girls Cross Country team has advanced to the 2A State Meet Saturday at Maxwell Park in Normal. Nicolas Varon was the only boy from PBL to advance.

The PBL Panthers won their own Classic Tournament on Saturday by beating Monticello 21-25, 25-23, 25-19. Milford placed third. Rantoul took fifth.

St. Louis wasted a terrific performance by Adam Wainwright, who pitched 7 2/3 innings of four-hit ball as Carlos Martinez gave up 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning in a 3-1 loss to the Braves.

The Raiders scored a TD with 1:57 left to send Oakland past the Bears, 24-21 in London.

 

Aaron Jones scored a career-high four touchdowns and the 4-1 Packers bounced back from their only loss by hanging on for a 34-24 victory over the Cowboys.

 

The Colts handed the Chiefs their first loss as Marlon Mack ran for 132 yards and Adam Vinatieri nailed four field goals to lead Indianapolis to a 19-13 victory. 

 

NASCAR

Kyle Larson has advanced to the next round of NASCAR’s Cup playoff by taking Sunday’s race at Dover International Speedway. Larson snapped a 75-race winless streak that included nine runner-up finishes since September 2017 in Richmond. NASCAR playoff drivers took the top six spots: Martin Truex Jr. finished second, followed by Alex Bowman, Kevin Harvick, Hamlin and Kyle Busch.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein says former catcher David Ross is on the team's list of candidates for its manager job. He also says he wants to talk to at least one member of the coaching staff, and at least one other candidate is working for a team in the playoffs. Epstein is looking for a successor to Joe Maddon, whose contract expired after Chicago missed the playoffs this year for the first time since 2014.
