Altmyer will take over at quarterback when Illinois opens the 2023 season on Sept. 2 against Toledo at Memorial Stadium. Altmyer transferred to Illinois in January after two seasons at Ole Miss. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — “The Galloping Ghost” is returning to Memorial Stadium this fall. The Freaky Fast 77 Yard Dash presented by Jimmy John’s, a new promotion between the third and fourth quarters of Fighting Illini football games, will feature a race between Red Grange and a University of Illinois student inside the hashes of Zuppke Field at Memorial Stadium.  The contestants will begin at the 23-yard line, racing 77 yards across the field to honor the legendary No. 77 worn by Red Grange during his three All-American seasons at Illinois from 1923-25. The student racing the modern-day version of Red will have a chance to win free Jimmy John’s for a year.   

It will be a difficult task for the student contestants lining up against one of college football’s all-time greats. Harold “Red” Grange ran for over 2,000 yards and scored 34 touchdowns during his three seasons in Champaign. He was a charter member of the Pro (1963) and College (1951) Football Halls of Fame

The Maxwell Football Club announced on Monday that Illinois defensive linemen Jer'Zhan Newton and Keith Randolph Jr. were named to The Chuck Bednarik Award  2023 preseason watch list. The Chuck Bednarik Award is presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football. The award was launched in 1995, and it is named in honor of Pro and College Football Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik, a two-time Super Bowl champion and the last player in NFL history to play full-time on both sides of the ball (center and linebacker).

Opting to purchase season tickets for Illinois football's 2023 campaign, King was stunned to learn that he was the Illini's 10,000th new season ticket holder. VALENCIA – Senior Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 25 points in 15 minutes Wednesday to lead Illinois to a 105-60 victory over the Valencia International Basketball Academy. Five players scored in double figures and 12 entered the scoring column as Illinois led from start to finish in the blowout win. Shannon erupted for 23 of his game-high 25 points in less than 12 first-half minutes. He scored from everywhere, attacking the basket, in transition, and from the outside, finishing 10-of-14 from the field with two 3-pointers and adding 3-of-3 from the foul line. Freshman Amani Hansberry netted 13 and nearly recorded a double-double, collecting a game-high nine rebounds including eight on the offensive end. Fellow freshman Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn scored 12 with three steals. Senior Justin Harmon and junior Dain Dainja added 10 points apiece.

(MIchigan–jc)  The FireKeepers Casino 400 was postponed on Sunday afternoon from Michigan International Speedway due to wet conditions at the track. The race will continue this morning on WPXN starting at 11am.

MADRID – After arriving in Spain on Saturday, Illinois took the court on Sunday for its opening game against the Madrid All-Stars. Following an expected slow start and despite an off-shooting night, the Illini relied on their defense to spark a second-half comeback and claim an 84-73 victory…Three Illini scored in double figures, led by junior Dain Dainja's 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Dainja also controlled the glass, grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds for a double-double. Sophomore Sencire Harris gave the Illini a huge defensive lift in the second half and finished with 14 points and game-high five steals. Senior Terrence Shannon Jr. added 12 points and four assists.

EI BASEBALL

Due to wet field conditions, the top bracket of the 2023 E.I. League tournament was moved from Scheiwe Field in Buckley to Paxton’s Memorial Field. In the quarterfinal game, the Decatur Commodores edged out the Arcola Riders 6-5 and then went on to give the Dutchmasters everything they could handle in the semi-final nightcap with the Dutchmasters prevailing 4-2. After the Commodores tied the game in the 7th inning, the Dutchmasters scored 1 in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead and added an insurance run in the 8th as Evan Addis picked up the win in the relief for the league champion and #1 seed Dutchmasters. After Trey VanWinkle hit a 1 out triple in the 7th, 13 year Dutchmasters veteran second baseman, Josh Krumwiede hit a laser 2 out single to drive in the game winning run.  The hit was Krumwiede 296th career E.I. hit and one of the most important of his career…and for the Dutchmasters for the day. Quentin Hatfill continued his tear, going 3-4 with an RBI while Drew Schrodt and Jay Eshleman drove in the other 2 Dutchmaster runs.

Andy Davis started for the Dutchmasters before giving way to Addis.  Davis went 6.1 innings allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits, recording 5 strikeouts, while walking 3.  Addis pitched 2.2 innings to earn his 4th win of the season, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2.

In tournament action from Royal’s Meier Field, the Royal Giants defeated the Paxton Swedes in a 10 inning thriller, winning 2-1 to secure their spot against the Dutchmasters in next weekend’s championship series.

The best of 3 E.I. Tournament Championship series will begin on Saturday, August 12 at Royal’s Meier Field beginning at 2 p.m. with game 2 and a possible game 3 on Sunday, August 13 at Scheiwe Field in Buckley.

At Schiewe Field in Buckley, The Decatur Commodores take on the Arcola Riders at noon.The host Dutchmasters will take on the winner of that game around 3pm. At Meyer Field in St Joseph the number two seeded Royal Giants will take on the Paxton Swedes. That game will start at 1pm.

The Big Ten Conference has begun preliminary talks about potentially expanding membership to 18 or 20 teams. Pac-12 teams seem to be on the radar for potential expansion. USC and UCLA will join in 2024-2025. If the conference opts to add new schools, Oregon and Washington are being considered. Stanford and Cal would be considered if the Big Ten moves to 20 teams.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois Athletics is proud to host FamILLy Night sponsored by Busey Bank once again at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 12 The free event begins at 5:30 p.m. with autographs from the football team in the Great West Hall, followed by the feature movie of Super Mario Bros. at 7 p.m. on the Memorial Stadium video board. Admission is free and the first 300 fans will receive a free Illini popcorn bucket with popcorn sponsored by Busey Bank. The first 300 fans can pickup their popcorn buckets at the concessions stand (no free refills). Fans are encouraged to bring their own food, drinks (no alcohol) and blankets onto the field.
