The Big Ten will play Volleyball beginning Jan 22

(Urbana-cf)-- The Big Ten Volleyball season will be played after being pushed back from the fall to the winter. The University of Illinois released their schedule yesterday afternoon. The Illini will play an all Big Ten Schedule starting Jan. 22, at Iowa. Wisconsin, Penn State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Minnesota, Maryland, Indiana and Purdue will round out the season. The Illini will play 22 games with 11 at Huff Hall. 


 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- The NFL season still has one week to go, but for Fantasy Football players, the season wrapped up last week. Pro Football Focus has begun handing out awards, and one of the awards has been awarded to Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery. The “Comeback Player of the Year” award was given to the second year running back who averaged 22.24 fantasy points per game. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- Ahead of their Week 17 matchup with the Green Bay Packers, the Bears have released their injury report. Defensive Tackle Akiem Hicks did not practice due to illness. Rookie Defensive Back Jaylon Johnson did not practice due to shoulder issues. And Defensive Back Bust Skrine(SCREEN) did not practice due to concussion. The Bears need a win over the Packers, or a Arizona Cardinals loss to obtain a playoff spot.

(Urbana-cf)-- Two more Fighting Illini Football players will be entering the NFL Draft. Offensive Lineman Kendrick Green and Linebacker Milo Eifler have announced that they will declare for the NFL Draft. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- The Chiago Blackhaws have suffered another hit to the roster. Center and Captain Jonathon Towes(TAVES) released a statement on his medical condition. Towes says he has been experiencing symptoms that have left him “drained and lethargic.” Towes will be out indefinitely while more medical evaluations are performed. The news comes days after Kirby Dach(DOCK) had wrist surgery and will miss the entire season, and Alex Nylander(KNEE-LANDER) will miss 4 to 6 months with a knee injury. 

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- Fighting Illini Quarterback Brandon Peters will return to Illinois for one last season. Peters said that he made the decision to come back before he talked to Head Coach Bret Bielema… 

 

 

Peters missed time last season after contracting COVID-19 which gave Isaiah Williams a chance to start a few games. Peters knows that nothing's guaranteed, and that he will have to compete for the job…

(Urbana-cf)-- Fighting Illini Football Head Coach Bret Bielema made his first hire for his staff late Monday night bringing on Tony Peterson as his Offensive Coordinator. Peterson was the OC for Appalachian State last season, but has spent time in the Big Ten. Peterson describes his relationship with Bielema…

Monday Night Football: 

The Buffalo Bills defeated the Patriots 38-9. Bills Quarterback Josh Allen set the single season record for touchdown passes with 34, passing Jim Kelly. 

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- Fighting Illini Senior Linebacker Jake Hansen has declared for the NFL Draft. Hansen has 14 takeaways in the last two seasons, the most of any player in the nation during that time. Hansen finished his career at Illinois with 235 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and recoveries and three interceptions. In other Fighting Illini Football News, Head Coach Bret Bielema has hired Tony Peterson as his Offensive Coordinator. Peterson spent the 2020 season as Quarterbacks Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Appalachian State.

Rutgers 14, Illinois 15, Michigan 16, Michigan State 17, Northwestern 19, Minnesota is tied with Oregon at 21, and Ohio State is 25.

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- Fighting Illini Junior Guard Ayo Dosunmu is this week's Big Ten Co-Player of the week. Dosunmu averaged 30.0 PPG against Penn State and Indiana while also averaging 4 assists and 5 rebounds.

(Chicago-cf)-- The Chicago Cubs are set to trade Starting Pitcher Yu Darvish and Victor Caratini to the San Diego Padres. The Cubs receive Right Hander Zach Davies in the trade plus four outfield prospects. The Padres also acquired Blake Snell from Tampa Sunday Night. 

 

NHL

(Chicago-cf)-- Chicago Blackhawks Center Kirby Dach(Dock) will undergo wrist surgery. Dach will miss 4 to 5 months, meaning the entire Blackhawks upcoming season. Dach sustained the injury in the world Juniors Championship in the Team Canada win against Russia.

Bears, Packers win, Colts lose

NFL: 

The Chicago Bears have a chance to make the playoffs with yesterday's 41-17 win over Jacksonville. Bears Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky went 24/35 for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Bears need to beat Green Bay in Week 17 to officially take the final Wild Card Spot. 

 

The Indianapolis Colts lost a nail bitter to the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday afternoon 28-24. The Steelers won the AFC North Title with the win. Colts Quarterback Phillip Rivers threw 22 competitions for 270 yards and 1 touchdown. 

 

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Tennessee Titans 40-14. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw 21 competitions for 231 yards and 4 touchdowns. 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- The #1 Seed in the AFC has been set. With the Kansas City Chiefs win against the Atlanta Falcons yesterday, the Chiefs have secured the top seed in the AFC and will have a first round playoff bye. 

 

Illini: 

The #18 Fighting Illini Men’s basketball team beat Indiana Saturday Afternoon 69-60. Junior Guard Ayo Dosubmu finished the game with 30 points and 5 assists while Kofi Cockburn finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds. The Illini now have a 7-3 overall record, with a 3-1 conference record.The Illini are off until after the New Year when they will take on Purdue at home Jan. 2. 

 

NBA: 

The Chicago Bulls lost their third straight game last night 129-128 to the Golden State Warriors. Bulls Forward Zach LaVine finished with 33 points. 


 

(Urbana-cf)-- Fighting Illini Senior Offensive Lineman Verderian Lowe announced yesterday that he will be returning for one last ride with the Illini Football program. Due to the pandemic, all seniors in the NCAA had the option to return for one more season. Lowe started all 8 games at tackle for the Illini this season, and ended the season with 34 straight starts. Lowe is 8 starts away from tying the record for the most held by Nathen Scheelhaase, Ryan McDonald, and Tim Simpson. 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- Hall of Fame Pitcher Phil Niekro passed away yesterday at the age of 81. Niekro was the originator of the “knuckleball” that continues to fool hitters to this day. Niekro notched more than 300 wins in his 24 year career.

Illinois beats Penn St. 98-81

The Fighting Illini Men’s Basketball team fought back from a 16 point deficit in the first half against Penn State to win 98-81. Junior Point Guard Ayo Dosunmu was 6 points away from tying his career high, scoring 30 points. Dosunmu was ejected on a double-technical foul with 27 seconds left in the game. Sophomore big man Kofi Cockburn tallied 23 points. Illinois is now 6-3 on the season. The Illini return home for a Saturday matchup against Indiana.

The Chicago Bulls dropped their season opener last night 124-104 against the Atlanta Hawks. Bulls Small Forward Zach LaVine tallied 23 points in 25 minutes while Bulls Center Lauri Markkanen dropped 25. The Bulls host the Pacers Saturday Night. 

 

 

(Chicago)-- White Sox Manager Tony La Russa has resolved the DUI case that was brought against him in February. La Russa said he “feels deep remorse and regret.” 

 

 

(Urbana)- Fighting Illini Senior Lineman Kendrick Green was named to the USA Today Second-Team All- America. Green is the first offensive lineman to win the award since Jon Asamoah in 2009. Green has not yet made a decision on returning for another season for the Illini, or entering the NFL draft. Offensive Lineman Doug Kramer announced that he will return for the 2021 season, after his season was cut short due to a knee injury. 

 

 

(Chicago)- Blackhawks winger Kirby Dach(DOCK) sustained an apparent wrist injury in Team Canada’s exhibition against Russia in the World Juniors Championship. There is no word on Dach’s condition or if he will be ready for the Blackhawks opener Jan. 13

The NBA season kicks off tonight with a pair of highly anticipated matchups. Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets host Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. Then its an LA match up as LeBron James and the Champion Los Angeles Lakers host rival Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers.

Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers were named starting quarterbacks for the Pro-Bowl. 6 other Packers were named to the Pro-Bowl including  receiver Davante Adams, cornerback Jaire Alexander, offensive tackle David Bakhtiari, guard Elgton Jenkins, running back Aaron Jones and linebacker Za'Darius Smith.  Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook, Detroit Lions Tight End TJ Hockenson, Chicago Bears Linebacker Khalil Mack and Cordarrelle Patterson will represent the NFC. Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darius Leonard, Guard Quenton Nelson, Center Ryan Kelly for the AFC. There will be no live Pro-Bowl because of the pandemic.

Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn each had a double double but it wasn’t enough as Rutgers def Illinois 91-88 on Sunday

 

NFL

David Montgomery rushed for a career high 146 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Chicago Bears def Minnesota Vikings 33-27.

 

Philip Rivers threw a late, tiebreaking touchdown to lead the Indianapolis Colts over the  Houston Texans 27-20.

 

Aaron Jones rushed for 145 and a touchdown to lead the Green Bay Packers over the Carolina Panthers 24-16 on Saturday.

 

Illinois has hired former Wisconsin Badgers Coach Bret Bielema as their next football coach. Bielema comes to Illinois after three years as an assistant in the NFL. Bielema won three consecutive Big Ten championships at Wisconsin from 2010 to 2012 and went 68-24 in seven seasons with the Badgers with five Top 25 finishes.  Bielema will receive a six-year contract with Illinois with a starting salary of $4.2 million.

 

The College Football Playoffs have been set. Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Notre Dame will all compete for the chance to play for the National Title. The Crimson Tide will take on the Fighting Irish in the Rose Bowl while the Buckeyes will take on the Tigers in the Sugar Bowl

The University of Illinois signed 14 football players for the December signing period

(WPXN-cf)-- The NCAA voted yesterday at their monthly meeting to grant a blanket waiver to all Division 1 athletes looking to transfer schools. The waiver allows immediate eligibility rather than having to sit out one season. 

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- Yesterday was National Signing Day for College Football and the University of Illinois signed 14 total athletes for the December period. 5 recruits came from Florida, 3 from Illinois 2 from Georgia and Texas, and 1 each from Virginia and Missouri.

(Urbana-cf)-- The #13 Fighting Illini won their Big Ten season opener last night over Minnesota 92-65. Kofi Cockburn scored a new career high 33 points in the contest. But, the Illini as a team still had 27 total fouls. Head Coach Brad Underwood says that it is an area of concern…

(Chicago-cf)-- Longtime Fighting Illini Men’s Basketball Public Address Announcer Tim Sinclar will be the new PA for the Chicago Bulls this upcoming season. The Mahomet Native spent two seasons in Indianapolis as the PA for the Pacers, and is in his first season as PA for the Chicago Bears. Sinclair was also the PA for the NBA All-Star Game last season in Chicago. 

 

 

(St. Louis-cf)-- Longtime St. Louis Cardinals Pitcher Adam Wainwright was this year's Roberto Clemente award winner. Wainwright won the award with work he has done with his charities to raise $5.8 million, which was donated across 94 charities.

(Durham, NC-cf)-- The #6 Fighting Illini took down #10 Duke 83-60 at Cameron Indoor Stadium for the frist time since 1995. Fighting Illini Head Coach Brad Underwood gives his thoughts on the game…

(WPXN-cf)-- The Ohio State Buckeyes are still alive when it comes to the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes are still ranked #4, beating out Texas A&M and Florida. The other three teams that are in as of now are Alabama, Notre Dame, and Clemson. In other college football news, the Ohio State Michigan game has been canceled for this upcoming Saturday. This will be the third game that Buckeys have missed meaning that they could be eliminated from the Big Ten Championship game. The Big Ten will meet today on the matter. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- The Chicago White Sox signed Outfielder Adam Eaton yesterday afternoon. The Free Agent Outfielder signed a 1 year deal worth $7 million. This will be Eaton’s second stint with the South Siders, 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- The NHL has agreed on a start date for the regular season. The NHL and the Player’s Union have cleared all of their financial hurdles, and are aiming for a Jan. 13 start time. The regular season will be 52 games.

(WPXN-cf)-- Seven-time MLB All-Star Dick Allen passed away yesterday. Allen was the 1964 NL Rookie of the Year, and 1972 AL MVP with the Chicago White Sox. Allen was 78.

The Indianapolis Colts beat the Texans 26-20, improving to 8-4 on the season. 


 The New Orleans Saints became the first team in the NFL to clinch a playoff spot. The Saints are 10-2 on the season.

(WPXN-cf)-- There won’t be any fans at this year’s Rose Bowl Game. The Tournament of Roses committee attempted to allow a limited amount of fans in for this year's Bowl Game, but the City of Pasadena will not allow it due to increased COVID-19 mitigations. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- Longtime Chicago Cubs announcer Len Kasper announced that he will not be returning to the booth for the North Siders next season. Kasper will be heading to the South side to take over play by play duties for Sox radio.

Illinois loses to #2 Baylor 82-69

The #5 Fighting Illini dropped their first game of the season to #2 Baylor last night 82-69. Sophomore big man Kofi Cockburn only played 6 minutes in the first half as he was in foul trouble early. Junior Guard Ayo Dosunmu also had a rare off night as he went 6-18 from the field but tallied 18 points. Head Coach Brad Underwood recaps the first loss of the season…

NFL Scores: 

The Pittsburgh Steelers remain unbeaten on the season with a 19-14 win over the undermanned Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers lead the AFC North at 11-0.

 

(Chicago-cf)-- The Chicago Cubs have non-tendered Outfielders Kyle Schwarber and Albert Almora meaning that the Cubs will not offer them a contract for the 2021 season. Schwarber and Almora are Free Agents in 2021. The Cubs did tender a contract to Kris Bryant, Javy Baez, and Wilson Contreras. 


 

(Bloomington-cf)-- The IHSA met yesterday for their regular discussion session, and they have no plans of starting sports before next year with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The board reiterated that they remain committed to playing sports safely this school year. 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- The 2020-21 NBA season tips off in just under 3 three weeks, and the league has resumed coronavirus testing as training camp resumes. Out of the 546 players tested, the league is announcing 48 positive tests.  The NBA regular season tips off Dec. 22. 

 

#5 Illinois takes on #2 Baylor tonight at 9pm

The Fighting Illini Men’s Basketball team has added another game this week. The Illini will take on the University of Tennessee Martin Saturday night at State Farm Center at 8pm.

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- Long time Chicago Bulls Center Joakim Noah was waived by the Clippers last night, which means he will likely retire ending a dominant 13 year career. Noah was a Defensive player of the year, and a 2 time NBA All-Defense team member. 

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- The Illini are back on their regular routine with Sunday and Monday off, and having their first day of practice on Tuesday after having Saturdays game against OSU cancelled.
