(Champaign–jc)  –  The Illinois football staff led by head coach Bret Bielema signed 19 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. Bielema continued Illinois' rise in recruiting by signing his third-straight top-50 recruiting class, a feat achieved at Illinois for the first time since the beginning of recruiting rankings, according to 247Sports. Bielema has now signed three of the four highest-ranked Illini recruiting classes of the past 15 years, according to 247Sports. The class is highlighted by six players with at least one four-star rating from a national recruiting service, the Illini's most four-star recruits since 2009. Illinois bolstered its interior, signing seven offensive or defensive linemen that combined for over 55 other Power-5 offers.  Bielema also continued his strong commitment to recruiting the state of Illinois by signing four players that all ranked within the top 33 in the state, according to 247Sports. Bielema has now signed at least four of the state's top 33 in three straight years,

(Champaign–jc)  –  After 40 minutes, 14 leads changes, and eight ties, the Illinois women's basketball team fell 69-66 to Missouri at home Sunday in the 2023 edition of the McBride Homes Braggin' Rights game. The Fighting Illini (5-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Genesis Bryant, who had 20 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Kendall Bostic tacked on 18 points and nine rebounds, while Adalia McKenzie added seven points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

(Undated–jc)  –  Illinois defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton was named to five All-America lists on Wednesday by publications around the country. Newton was named a first team All-American by The Athletic, CBS, PFF, Sports Illustrated, and USA TODAY. 

One of the most disruptive players in the nation, Newton is now a back-to-back All-American after earning numerous second-team honors a year ago. This season, Newton has added Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Nagurski Trophy finalist, as one of the nation's top five defensive players, to his growing list of accolades. Newton led Power-5 defensive tackles in quarterback pressures for the second straight season in 2023 His 44 pressures during the regular season led all Big Ten defensive tackles by 15, and he also led Big Ten defensive tackles in sacks with 7.5, which ranked second overall in the conference. Over the last two seasons, Newton totaled 103 quarterback pressures, by far the most in the nation among defensive tackles.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Jer'Zhan Newton is headed to Charlotte for the 2023 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Awards Banquet on Monday at 6 p.m. CT/7 p.m. ET. The Charlotte Touchdown Club and Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) will present the Nagurski Trophy to the nation's top defensive player at the Charlotte Convention Center. Monday's banquet will be streamed live by the Charlotte Touchdown Club.  Newton is one of five finalists for the award, along with Iowa CB Cooper DeJean, Georgia S Malaki Starks, Notre Dame S Xavier Watts, and NC State LB Payton Wilson.

(Champaign–jc)  – Illinois volleyball's Raina Terry was named First Team All-Big Ten, the league announced on Thursday. This is the second-straight time Terry has been bestowed the honor. Terry closed out her senior campaign leading the conference with 618 total points and finishing second with 539 total kills. The outside hitter's 4.69 kills per set ranked sixth nationally and second in the conference, while her 5.37 points per set were seventh in the country and second in the league. Terry tallied 13.18 attacks per set and 1,516 total attacks, both placing her third in the nation and atop the Big Ten. During her reign of terror this season, Terry logged 10 matches with 20 or more kills.The Marengo, Ohio, native was the first player in the Big Ten to reach 500 kills this year.
