Cissna Park and GCMS advance to 1A and 2A Sectional Finals

(Colfax--jc)  -- The Cissna Park Timberwolves have advanced to the 1-A Sectional Final on Friday nite by beating the Grant Park Dragons 71-48  last night at Ridgeview High School. Cissna Park Boys Basketball Coach Kevin Long notched his 500 win as a coach in the victory. Coach Long says the team got off to a good start  and played good defense too…

Christian Stadeli had 25 points. Sophomore Ian Rogers had 10 points to lead the way for Cissna Park.

In 2-A Sectional semi-finals from Unity of Tolono High School, Gibson City Melvin Sibley won over Tuscola 50 to 30.Ryland Holt led with 13 points.

That sets up Sectional final games on Friday night.

In 2-A at Unity its Bloomington Central Catholic vs Gibson City Melvin Sibley

In 1-A at Ridgeview High School its Cissna Park and Champaign Judah Christian.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — Brad Keselowski recovered from a stomach virus in time to win Sunday's NASCAR Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Team Penske started the day with a replacement driver on standby for Keselowski because the bug that hit him late Friday night kept him out of the car for a portion of final practice. Martin Truex Jr. finished second in a rebound from his disappointing debut with Joe Gibbs Racing. Kurt Busch was third in a Chevrolet for Chip Ganassi Racing.

(Rantoul--jc)  The 2019 E I Baseball schedule was released over the weekend. 6 teams will participate in the league this year. They are the Buckley Dutchmasters, Gifford-Flatville Gifflats, Paxton Swedes, Royal Giants, Game 7 and newcomer in El Paso. The first week of the 20-19 season is Sunday May 26. Buckley hosts Paxton at Schiewe Field in Buckley. Gifford takes on Royal in Gifford and Game 7 takes on El Paso in Lexington.The regular season runs through the final Sunday in July. The post season takes place the first two weeks in August. There is no Jamboree set for this year.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Denny Hamlin has won his second Daytona 500 in four years. He took the checkered flag for Joe Gibbs Racing a month after Joe Gibbs' oldest son died following a long battle with a degenerative neurological disease. J.D. Gibbs was 49. Hamlin moved out front after a final restart and had teammate Kyle Busch blocking in the final lap. Joe Gibbs says "what happened here is really unreal."

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano won yesterday's Daytona 500 qualifying races in a pair of Ford sweeps. Harvick won the first of the 150-mile qualifying races that set the field for NASCAR's showcase event. Logano used a last-lap pass for the lead in the second one. Peter Kligerman, Casey Mears, Tyler Reddick and Brendan Gaughan secured spots for Sunday's season-opening race, while Joey Gase and Ryan Truex both missed qualifying for their first Daytona 500.

(Champaign-dg)-Two days before the 2019 College Baseball Season begins for Illinois, Dan Hartleb’s program received some Big Ten recognition. In a pre-season poll, Big Ten Coaches voted Illinois 3rd in a 13 team field. Minnesota came out on top with Michigan second.

Patriots Win Supper Bowl 53 13-3 Over the LA Rams

ATLANTA (AP) — The Patriots are Super Bowl champions for the sixth time following a 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams. It was the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in the 53-year history of the game, and the first in which neither team reached the end zone until the fourth quarter. Julian Edelman was the MVP of Super Bowl 53 after missing all of last season with a torn ACL. Edelman had 10 receptions for 141 yards.


 

 

(Clifton--jc)  The Cissna Park Timberwolves are champions of the 2019 Sangamon Valley Conference Boys Basketball tournament. WIth the weather delays twice last week the tournament was run in about 27 hours for the eight teams in the contests. The Cissna Park Timberwolves beat the Paxton Buckley Loda Panthers 53 to 50 Saturday night in a game heard live on WPXN. The contest went back and forth the entire game.

Central Clifton’s Comets won the third place game against the Dwight Trojans.

(Watseka--jc)  -- Watseka High School will be celebrating 50’s & 60’s Night at the Warrior boys’ basketball game on Friday, February 8th. The Warriors will be playing the PBL Panthers with the JV game tipping off at 6:00pm. The game will take place at Watseka’s Glenn Raymond Gym at 101 East Mulberry Street. All former coaches, managers, players, and cheerleaders from the Watseka Warriors (1950-1969), Paxton Mustangs (1950-1969), Buckley Dutchmasters (1950-1952), Loda Lions (1950-1952), and Buckley-Loda Rockets (1952-1969) are invited to attend and sign-up when arriving at the gym. All those who sign in will be introduced at halftime of the varsity game. Students and fans are encouraged to dress in a 50’s & 60’s attire. Doors will open at 5:00pm
