White Sox name Hall of Famer, Tony LaRussa as new Manager

(Chicago-cf)-- The Chicago White Sox name Tony La Russa as their next manager. La Russa ranks third in all-time manager wins with 2,728, falling behind Connie Mack(3,731) and John McGraw(2,763). La Russa has won 6 pennants in his time as a skipper with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland A’s, and St. Louis Cardinals which earned him a spot in Cooperstown in 2014. La Russa first started his managerial career on the South Side in 1979 and retired in 2011. 

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- The Fighting Illini Basketball team now knows who their opponent will be for the Big/Ten ACC Challenge. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported that Illinois will take on Duke at Cameron Indoor. This is the first time that the Illini have played at Cameron since 1995, Illinois won that game. Other notable matchups in the challenge are North Carolina @ Iowa, Ohio State @ Notre Dame, and Indiana @ Florida State.

Kyle Busch wins weather delayed race at Texas

(WPXN-cf)-- The IHSA reached a decision yesterday afternoon on the decision of fall sports. Just 24 hours after the Illinois Department of Public Health moved the risk level of basketball from medium to high, the IHSA is proceeding with the basketball season as scheduled. Practices can begin starting Nov. 16 with games starting Nov. 30. In the IHSA guidance, there will be no more than 50 total people in the gym including players, coaches, and refs. Masks must be worn, and social distancing must be followed on the benches. 

 

 

(Tampa-cf)-- The NFL is starting preparations for having fan attendance at the Super Bowl. The superbowl is scheduled to be played on February 7th at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Florida. The NFL is planning on 20% of the stadiums 65,000 seats to have spectators in them. Fans will be in pods 6 feet apart and masks will be mandatory. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- In the latest injury report, the Chicago Bears might be without two offensive players Sunday against the Saints. WR Allen Robinson is listed on the NFL’s concussion protocol, and Offensive Lineman Cody Whitehair is listed as day to day after a calf injury. 

 

 

(St. Louis-cf)-- The St. Louis Cardinals have made a few roster moves already this offseason. Longtime catcher Yadier Molina is a free agent for the first time in his 17 year career with the Red Birds, with the expiration of his contract with the conclusion of the World Series. Molina is looking to play two more seasons, until he is 40 with the Cardinals but is open to playing for other teams. The Cardinals also declined the 2021 club-option for second baseman Kolten Wong. Wong is now a free agent, and is free to explore all options with the Cardinals or other teams.

Dodgers win World Series

The LA Dodgers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 to win the World Series. It was their first World Series title since 1988.

(Urbana-cf)-- Illinois Junior Point Guard Ayo Dosunmu has won another preseason honor. Ayo was selected as a 2020-21 preseason All-American first team by CBS Sports. Ayo is joined on the 1st team by Iowa Center Luka Garza, Baylor Guard Jarod Butler, Oklahoma State Guard, Cade Cunningham, and Gonzaga Forward Cade Kispert. There is just under a month until the tip of NCAA basketball. 

 

 

NASCAR is hoping that today is the day the race at Texas will be completed. The race has been rescheduled for 2pm today. 

 

Rams beat Bears 24-10

Monday Night Football: 

The Chicago Bears couldn’t get the offense rolling last night against the Rams. The Bears didn’t score an offensive touchdown and lost 24-10, dropping to 5-2 on the season. 

 

(Orlando-jm) -- ESPN is scrapping plans to host 8 men’s college basketball events in the Orlando bubble, the site of the NBA finals. One of the events was the Jimmy V Classic which featured Illinois taking on Baylor and Gonzaga taking on Tennessee. The games could still be played if a location can be found.

 

(Undated-jm) -- The latest college football rankings are out. Clemson continues at #1, followed by Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Georgia rounds out the top 5. Wisconsin comes in at #9, Michigan at #13, Indiana is at #17, Penn State comes in at #18.

 

(Undated-jm) -- Hendrick Motorsports announced Monday that Rudy Fugle will join the organization as crew chief of the No. 24 Chevrolet for William Byron in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series. Fugle spent the last eight seasons as crew chief for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series.

The Illini dropped the season opener Friday night against Wisconsin 45-7. Illini QB Brandon Peters tallied 75 rush yards on 7 attempts. 

 

 

(Madison, WISC-cf)-- Wisconsin Badgers QB Graham Mertz has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. This comes after a stellar performance against the Illini on Friday Night completing 20-21 passes. There is no word at this time if there have been any positive tests for the Fighting Illini. 

 

(Texas-cf)-- The Nascar Cup Series was postponed yesterday due to rain on lap 52. The race has been rescheduled for this morning. There is however a 90% chance of rain in the forecast for Monday in Texas. In other Nascar news, Martin Truex, and his team were docked points yesterday for an illegal spoiler. The penalty cost Truex 20 team and 20 owner points, and moved him to the back of the field.

(Bloomington-cf)-- The IHSA has submitted a proposal to the IDPH on how they will conduct winter sports. The IDPH will need to grant approval for high risk sports such as basketball/wrestling. The IHSA also passed a waiver on allowing sports competing in the spring to be able to participate on non-school teams throughout the duration of that sports season.

White Sox First Baseman Jose Abreu wins MLB Player of the Year

(Chicago-cf)-- A pair of White Sox have won awards for this past season. First baseman Jose Abreu won MLB Player of the year, and General Manager Rick Hahn brought home the Executive of the year award. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- The Chicago Bears have signed veteran LineBacker Manti Te’o (TAY-OW) to the practice squad. Te’o has notched 307 tackles in 48 games. In other Bears news, the NFL power rankings have been released entering week 7. The Bears jumped up to 11th from 13th.

The Kansas City Chiefs are now 5 and 1 after defeating the Buffalo Bills 26-17 in the first of two Monday night football games.

(Charlotte-jm) -- NASCAR has announced Kyle Larson will be reinstated starting in January. Larson was suspended indefinitely and lost his job at Chip Ganassi racing after using a racial slur during an iRacing event.

Bears win, Packers lose, Colts win

NFL Scores: 

The Chicago Bears now hold first place in the NFC North with a 23-16 win over the Panthers. QB Nick Foles threw for 198 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. 

 

The Green Bay Packers dropped to 4-1 with a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38-10. Aaron Rodgers threw 16 completions for 160 yards and two interceptions. 

 

There were a lot of fireworks between the Colts and the Bengals with the Colts coming out on top 31-27. Colts QB Phillip Rivers threw for 371 yards and 3 touchdowns. 

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- The Captains for the Fighting Illini Football team have been named for this upcoming season. Center Doug Cramer, QB Brandon Peters, Linebacker Jake Hansen, Cornerback Nate Hobbs, and Punter Blake Hayes. The captains were selected by a vote of the student-athletes, and staff. This is also the second time that Kramer, Hansen, and Hayes have been named captains in their career at Illinois. 

 

 

(West Lafayette-cf)-- Big Ten football is slated to start this Friday Night with Illinois taking on Wisconsin. However, without playing a single game the conference has already ran into a roadblock. Purdue Head Coach Jeff Brohm has tested positive for COVID-19. Brohm tested positive yesterday, and is in self-isolation at home. 

 

 

The NASCAR Cup Series began the ‘Round of 8’ on Sunday afternoon at the Kansas Speedway. Joey Logano was this weekend's winner The Motor Racing Network covered all the action from green to checkers in the Hollywood Casino 400.

 

 

With the win, Joey Logano is now locked in the Championship 4 next month at Phoenix Raceway.   The Performance Racing Network will have coverage from Texas Motor Speedway this Sunday starting at 2:30 on WPXN

(Indianapolis-cf)-- The NCAA will be voting on a set of proposals in January of next year. The first being the NCAA permitting players to receive money for endorsement deals and sponsorship deals, but did not list on how it will shape the name, image, and likeness compensation. The second proposal will be that players can be let out of their letter of intent one time being able to transfer schools with no penalty, like the rule is written currently that football, basketball and hockey players must sit out one season.

(Chicago-jm) -- The name of the first potential candidate to replace Rick Renteria for the Chicago White Sox manager position has surfaced. ESPN is reporting the Sox have received permission from the Los Angeles Angels to interview Tony La Russa. La Russa hasn’t been a manager since ending a 16 year run with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011.

 

(Chicago-jm) -- The Chicago Bears have placed left guard James Daniels on injured reserve after injuring his pectoral muscle last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sam Mustipher, a member of the practice squad, has been brought up to fill Daniels place.

The Atlanta Braves took game 2 of the National League Division Series by beating the Dodgers 8-7. They lead the Series 2-0.

 

The Tampa Bay Rays are one game away from the World Series after they beat the Astros 5-2.

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- The search is on for a new skipper on the south side, after the Chicago White Sox fired Rick Rentria. Bruce Bochey, former manager of the San Francisco Giants said he “would listen” to the White Sox on a potential job. Bochey is noted for being at the helm of the last “dynasty” as he and the Giants won three World Series Titles from 2010 to 2014.

 

Tuesday Night Football Scores:

The Tennessee Titans defeated the Buffalo Bills 42-16. QB Ryan Tannehill threw 4 touchdowns for the Titans. 

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- With the uncertainty in sports this year due to COVID-19, there are some answers coming to the surface on NCAA basketball. Illinois will host a four team MTE or Multi-Team-Event in Champaign Nov. 25-27. The four teams include Wright State, Ohio, AND North Carolina AT.  The U of I has not officially confirmed this schedule but they should once contracts are signed. Illinois will also play Baylor in the Jimmy V Classic in Orlando Dec. 2nd. There is no official word on the Braggin’ Rights Game at this time.

Fighting Illini Football open the Season Friday OCT 23rd at Wisconsin

(Champaign-jm) -- The Fighting Illini football team knew they would open the season at Wisconsin. Now they know what time. The Illini will take on the Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium on Friday, October 23rd at 7pm. You can hear that game here on WPXN.

 

(Chicago-jm) -- The Chicago Bears have announced a member of the team’s practice squad has tested positive for the Coronavirus. Coach Matt Nagy said Badara Traore, a practice squad offensive lineman, is the player that tested positive. 

 

(Chicago-jm) -- The Chicago White Sox and manager Rick Renteria have agreed to part ways. Renteria was 236 and 309 in four seasons on the south side. The Sox also announced longtime pitching coach Don Cooper will not return next season. Cooper has been with the Sox since 2002.

(Los Angeles-jm) -- The L.A. Lakers won their 17th NBA title after defeating the Miami Heat 106-93 Sunday night. LeBron James was named finals MVP becoming the first player to win finals MVP with 3 different organizations.

(Charlotte-jm) -- Chase Elliott swept the road course portion of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series this year after winning Sunday at the Charlotte Roval. Elliott has won the last 4 road course races dating back to last season.

 

(Charlotte-jm) -- Elliott’s win Sunday pushed him into the next round of NASCARs playoffs. Joining him is Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr, Alex Bowman and Kurt Busch. Defending champion Kyle Busch, Austin Dillon, Ryan Blaney and William Byron were eliminated.

Cairo Santos kicked a 38 yard field goal with 1:17 left and the Chicago Bears beat Tom Brady and Tampa Bay Bucs 20-19.  Nick Foles threw for 243 yards and a touchdown. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- The Cory Crawford era in Chicago is over. The Chicago Blackhawks have decided to part ways with the two time Stanley Cup Champion. Crawford has been in the league since 2003 and started since 2011. Crawford won the Stanley Cup in 2013 and 2015. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- Cubs Pitcher Alec Mills who threw a no-hitter on Sept. 13 against the Brewers, is being honored in the Hall of Fame. Cooperstown took the hat that Mills wore in the game, as well as the game ball and enshrined it into the Hall of Fame. With Mills no-no last month, that was just the 16th no-hitter thrown in Cubs history, Jake Arrettia was the last Cub to do so in 2016.

Cubs to retool, not rebuild according to Epstein

(Chicago-cf) Chicago Cubs President/Gm Theo Epstien spoke with the media yesterday for the first time since the Cubs were eliminated from the playoffs. Epstein told reporters that the Cubs will “retool, not rebuild” and that could also include changes in the Front Office. Epstein’s contract expires at the end of next season, and the Cubs also have several players that are up for contract extensions. 

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- Illinois Quarterback Brandon Peters worked with 12-year NFL Hall of Famer Kurt Warner this offseason to help take him to the next step. Peters told reporters that the Super Bowl Champion QB gave him drills and advice to work on his accuracy, footwork, and the mental aspect of the game. The Fighting Illini Hit the gridiron for the first time this season in just two weeks. 

 

 

(Kansas City-cf)-- Another New England Patriots player has tested positive for COVID-19. This comes after QB Cam Newton has tested positive for the coronavirus, which caused the Chiefs and Patriots game to be delayed to Monday Night. The Chiefs have not reported any positive tests at this time.

(Chicago-cf)-- Chicago Bears Rookie Tight End Cole Kmet only saw 15 snaps for the Monsters of the Midway in their loss Sunday to the Colts. Nagy cited the number of plays Kmet saw saying “it wasn’t enough” and is looking at getting the second round draft pick on the field more often. The Bears square off against Tampa Bay tomorrow night. 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- Known College Basketball analyst Andy Katz released his list of potential player of the year candidates yesterday afternoon. On that list there are 4 players from the Big Ten. 9th on the list is Sophomore Power Forward Trace Jackson-Davis from Indiana, 2nd Junior Illini Guard Ayo Dosunmu, and coming in 1st is reigning Player of the Year, Senior Iowa Big Man Luka Garza. The NCAA Basketball season tips off in just 50 days.

Nesbit narrowed down his top schools, Memphis, DePaul, and the Illini and chose Memphis yesterday afternoon. In other Illini Basketball news, CBS has confirmed that the Emerald Coast Classic has been canceled for this upcoming season. The Field for the tournament included Illinois, Florida, Oregon, and Iowa State. 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- The NFL has implemented new COVID-19 protocols for the remainder of the season. The new protocols include: All players and coaches must wear a mask when on the practice field, two daily tests which include the nasal swab and POC or Point of Care which yields faster results, all players must wear gloves minus the quarterback on his throwing hand, all meeting must be held virtually with deep cleans of the weight rooms, offices and dining areas, and a prohibition on team gatherings outside of the practice facility.

The Chicago Cubs dropped game one yesterday afternoon to the Miami Marlins 5-1. The Marlins lead the series 1-0.  

 

Paul Goldschmidt hit a 2-run homer to help the St. Louis Cardinals hold off the Padres last night 7-4 to take a one game lead in the series.. 

 

The Chicago White Sox dropped game two to the Oakland A;s yesterday afternoon 5-3. The series is tied 1-1. 

 

(New York-cf)-- The Tennessee Titans are the first NFL team to have an outbreak of COVID-19 cases. The 3 players and 5 personnel have tested positive for COVID-19. The outbreak of cases has caused the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans game on Sunday to be postponed. 

 

(Undated-jm) -- NASCAR released their 2021 Cup Series schedule introducing three new tracks, expanding to six road courses and adding a dirt track to the schedule. The season starts February 14th with the Daytona 500 and ends November 7th at Phoenix. Hi-liting the 2021 schedule include the addition of Circuit of the Americas a 3.426 road course in Austin, Texas May 23rd, a return to Nashville Superspeedway June 20th, the 4.048 road course at Road America in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin July 4th and the Brickyard will be held August 15th on the 2.439 mile road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The spring race at Bristol Motorspeedway will be held on dirt, the first time a cup race has been on dirt since 1970. Kentucky and Chicagoland Speedway were removed from hosting races next season. Michigan, Dover and Texas each lost one of their two cup races. Darlington adds another race at their track. The final change for next season, the All Star Race will be held at Texas Motor Speedway.
