Illini Improve to 2-0 on Trip to Italy

MLB 

 The Dodgers swept the Cardinals with a 2-1 walk off win. 

 

Ian Happ hit his second career grand slam, José Quintana tossed two-hit ball through seven innings to win his sixth straight decision and the Chicago Cubs ripped the Oakland Athletics 10-1. 

 

Ivan Nova pitched eight scoreless innings, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1. Tim Anderson reached base five times and scored three runs. .

 

MLB 

 The Chicago Cubs have signed catcher Jonathan Lucroy. The 33-year-old Lucroy was designated for assignment by the Angels last Friday. The two-time All-Star is expected to join the NL Central-leading Cubs in Cincinnati Today. Lucroy will help plug a gap created when All-Star Willson Contreras strained his hamstring.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Bears will unveil statues of Hall of Famers Walter Payton and George S. Halas outside of Soldier Field on Sept. 3. The 12-foot, 3,000-pound bronze statues honoring the great running back and the franchise founder and coach will be made public two days before Chicago hosts Green Bay to kick off the NFL's 100th season. 

 

(Italy--jc)   The Illinois men's basketball team cruised to another win in the second game of a four-game Italy tour. Illinois shot 62.3 percent from the field in a 112-63 victory over the Gazzada All-Stars on Wednesday night. Much of Illinois' damage was done from long distance, as the Illini drained 16-of-24 from 3-point range (66.7 percent) during its second game in two days to improve to 2-0 on the tour. Illinois is off today, traveling from Milan to Florence. The Illini play at 1 Friday afternoon  against the Livorno All-Stars.
