(WPXN-cf)-- Two EI Baseball games will be made up on July 24. Due to the inclement weather over the weekend and the past two days, the Paxton Swedes and Royal Giants will resume where they left off in the 4th inning, and the Buckley Dutchmasters and Gifford-Flatville Gifflats will also be made up on the 24th. There will be no EI Baseball this weekend due to Independence Day. 

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- With the July 1 deadline approaching for NCAA Football players to make their decisions to stay with their current team, or transfer 7 Fighting Illini players have made the decision to leave. Offensive Lineman Blaise Sparks, Kevin Tyler, and Phifer Griffin, Wide Receiver James Frenchie, Defensive Lineman Tre’Von Riggens, Defensive Lineman Anthony Shipton, Wide Receiver Kyron Cumby all made the decision to leave the program. Quarterback Coran Taylor has also switched positions to cornerback in the latest roster update. 

 

 

(Urbana-cf)-- Fighting Illini Head Basketball Coach Brad Underwood made another addition to his staff Tuesday afternoon. Underwood hired his son Tyler Underwood as director of recruiting and scouting. Tyler finished a six-year college basketball career which included 4 seasons at Illinois. 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- Hendrick Motorsports on the Nascar Cup Series has been picking up wins left and right this season. Nascar Driver Ryan Blaney says that Hendrick has their stuff together, and the biggest obstacle thus far has been picking up speed…

(WPXN-cf)-- All-Star voting is reaching its final stages with the weekend slated to begin July 13. The finalists for the Chicago White Sox include: Catcher Yasmani Grandal, First baseman Jose Abreu, and Third Basemen Yoan Moncada. For the St. Louis Cardinals: Catcher Yadier Molina, and Third Basemen Nolan Arenado. For the Chicago Cubs: Catcher Wilson Contreras, First Baseman Anthony Rizzo, Shortstop Javy Baez, Third Baseman Kris Bryant, and Outfielder Joc Pederson. 


 

(Urbana-cf)-- The Fighting Illini Men’s Basketball program will face a familiar opponent in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge this season. Much like last year, the Illini will host Notre Dame Nov. 29. This will be the 43rd meeting between the Irish and the Fighting Illini. 


 

(St. Louis-cf)-- The St. Louis Cardinals are looking for ways to record outs throughout games. Manager Mike Schildt says that they are going to get creative to find outs…

(Chicago-cf)-- Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu exited the first game of Saturday’s DH against the Mariners after being hit by a pitch in the knee. Abreu was struck by a 95mph sinker on the right knee. Further tests will be run to see if Abreu will miss any length of time. 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- Taking a look at the area MLB Teams in the divisions standings as we enter a new week of the season: the Chicago Cubs sit second or 2.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. The St. Louis Cardinals sit 8 games behind the Brewers for the lead. The Chicago White Sox are in 1st place in the AL Central, with a 2.5 game lead over the Cleveland Indians.

(Urbana-cf)-- 8 Fighting Illini football Players were named preseason All Big Ten Thursday afternoon. Jake Hansen, Owen Carney, Chase Brown, Blake Hayes, Ethan Tabel, Tony Adams, Doug Kramer, and Blake Jeresaty were all named by Big Ten staff. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- Chicago Bulls point guard Zach LaVine(laveen) was selected to represent the United States Basketball Team. The Olympic games open July 23, with the USA Men’s team playing an exhibition game against Nigeria July 10.

Wednesday's announcement positions the four-time champion and Hall of Fame driver to one day succeed the 71-year-old Hendrick at the top of NASCAR's winningest organization.

Chicago White Sox outfielder Adam Engel went back on the injured reserve list Tuesday with a strained right hamstring. There is no timetable for his return.

 

The Detroit Pistons will have the top pick in the NBA draft. The Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors round out the top 4.

 

The Harlem Globetrotters are petitioning the NBA to allow the team to join the league. The legendary exhibition basketball team, known for its players' innovative basketball skills, was founded in 1926. If approved they would become the 31st team.

(WPXN-cf)-- The House of ‘Paign or the Fighting Illini TBT team added another player to the roster Thursday afternoon. Longtime shooting guard Brandon Paul announced that he is joining the team. The roster now includes:  Mike Daum,  Nnanna Egwu, Jaylon Tate, Kipper Nichols, Andres Feliz, Rayvonte Rice, Demitri McCamey, Leron Black, and Michael Thompson who is a 2020 Northwestern graduate. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- The Chicago Bears have submitted a bid to purchase Arlington Park. Arlington Park, which is owned by Churchill Downs, announced they were putting the track up for sale, and Tuesday was the last day for potential buyers to place bids. Churchill downs will release a statement in the coming weeks. The Bears have played at Soldier Field since 1924, and the stadium has hosted numerous events including Jack Dempsy’s final fight, and a speech from Franklin D. Roosevelt which was viewed by more than 150,000 people.

(Chicago-cf)-- Chicago White Sox second baseman Nick Madrigal will miss the remainder of the 2021 season. Madrigal underwent season ending hamstring surgery Tuesday Afternoon after suffering an injury last week. 

 

 

(Chicago-cf)-- Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant exited last night's contest against the Mets after being hit by a pitch. Preliminary results showed a bruise on Bryant’s right hand. More tests will be run this afternoon. 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- Fighting Illini Power Forward Jacob Grandison announced that he is joining the Finland National Basketball Team for the summer. Grandison will head from Oakland California for Finland this Thursday. Grandison is a dual citizen.

Fighting Illini Head Football Coach Brett Bielema says that not being able to get on the road to recruit for the first 6 months he was in Champaign allowed him to get a great staff put together, and game plan for when recruiting opened up…

(Chicago-cf)-- The Chicago White Sox announced that outfielder Eloy Jimenez can resume baseball activities. Jimenez suffered a shoulder injury in Spring Training in March. Jimenez will start a rehab assignment in Arizona before moving up to a Sox affiliate. The time frame for Jimenez to move up to the minors is 4 weeks. 

 

 

(WPXN-cf)-- The MLB released the first update of All-Star voting. Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Byrant leads at the position, along with St. Louis Cardinals Nolan Arenado in second. Shortstop Javy Baez, Catcher Wilson Contreras and first baseman Anthony Rizzo all are in the top 3 at their position. St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is first among the position group. Four Chicago White Sox are in the top 3 in voting as well: First baseman Jose Abreu(2nd), catcher Yazmani Grandal(2nd) third baseman Nick Madrigal(2nd) and Shortstop Tim Anderson(3rd). 

 

 

(Bloomington-cf)-- The IHSA announced that Mediacom will pick up the 47th annual High School Shrine football game. The game will take place June 19th at 11am at Illinois Wesylan’s Tucci Stadium. The Shrine Game has highlighted the state's best football players since its inception. 


 

(Texas-cf)--Nascar Cup Series Driver Alex Bowman has been back up at the top of the pack at the finish of each race this season, unlike last year after the restart. Bowman and his team had to have “sit down” in order to get back on track and start finishing strong which has helped to his start this season says Bowman…

100 Meters and 200 Meters  Tuscola’s Allysa Williams is state Champion. Finishing 6th in the 100 was St Joe Odgen Spartan Atleigh Hamilton. Hamilton finished 3rd in the 200. Hamilton finished 2nd in the 400 for St Joe Odgen. Also in 1-A Hamilton finished 2nd in the long jump.

Congratulations to Paxton Buckley Loda Sophomore Trixie Johnson. Johnson finished 6th in the 800 meters at the state meet. Johnson set several records at PBL along the way this year.

The Cardinals are in 4th at 32-32. In the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox(41-24) hold on to the top spot by 5.5 games over the Cleveland Indians(34-28), the Kansas City Royals(3--33) sit third in the division.

(Urbana-cf)-- The Fighting Illini Football program added another quarterback Wednesday Afternoon. Division-2 QB Ryan Johnson will join the Illini as a PWO(Preferred Walk On). Johnson spent three seasons at Northern Michigan University played in 20 total games and threw for 2,844 total yards.

Secretary of State Jesse White's office is launching a new initiative to help reduce the number of uninsured drivers in Illinois

(Springfield-jm) -- Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza said the state’s financial condition is moving in the right direction despite a structural deficit, multi-billion dollar backlog of bills and one of the highest unfunded pension liabilities in the nation.

Secretary of State Spokesperson Henry Haupt. Under the system, insurance will be verified randomly at least twice a year. Drivers that can’t be verified will be given a chance to prove they have car insurance. If they can’t, they face license plate suspension and a $100 reinstatement fee.

(Paxton-jm) -- The Ford County Soil and Water Conservation District is sponsoring an electronics recycling event  in Paxton Saturday, June 19th. The group is accepting computer monitors, tvs printers, laptops and fax machines. Items not accepted include kitchen appliances, microwaves and vacuums. (Iroquois County-jm) -- Iroquois County Sheriff's Police are investigating a single-vehicle fatal accident.  According to police, at approximately 4:54 p.m. on June 4, Donald R. Heisner of L'Erable was traveling north on County Road 1500 East. when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle left the roadway into the east side ditch. Police say Heisner continued to travel northbound for another 275 feet, striking two trees along the way. Heisner's vehicle then became airborne for a short time before striking a final tree and coming to a stop near 2530 North. He was taken to Riverside Medical Center where he later died.

(Springfield-jm) -- A former state lawmaker is suing the state comptroller for salary increases he claims he was entitled to while serving in the Illinois General Assembly for 12 years, even though he voted against those raises as a lawmaker. Former Representative Mike Fortner joins two other former state senators in filing separate lawsuits against Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza over pay raises that they argue are mandated by the state constitution. Fortner’s class-action lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court claims that the automatic cost of living increases to lawmakers’ salaries were eliminated in violation of the Illinois Constitution. The total cost of withheld cost-of-living pay raises for lawmakers between 2010 and 2019 is estimated at $14.4 million.

(Vermilion County-jm) -- Some changes could be in store for wind-energy projects in Vermilion County. The changes will be considered during a meeting of the Executive and Legislation Committee. All wind turbines would be required to be at a distance of at least 1,200 feet, or three times the tower height, away from existing buildings. The current ordinance only specifies the 1,200-foot setback. Underground utilities would be required to be five feet below ground, an increase from the current three feet. Wind farm applicants would have to complete a soil study and send it to a county committee for approval, and they would also be required to pay for a noise level study if a resident complains about it.

 

 

(Paxton-jm) -- Paxton police have released their recent activity report. On June 7th Brendon Davis was arrested for aggravated domestic battery and criminal damage to property. On June 6th, Katrina Knox was arrested for driving on a suspended license and ticketed for improper use of registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle following a traffic stop at State and Railroad. A passenger, Eric Loy was arrested on two outstanding warrants. On June 4th, Lindsay Platz was arrested for driving on a revoked license following a traffic stop at Dawn and Railroad. On June 2nd, Elizabeth Campbell was arrested for retail theft for allegedly stealing items from the Dollar General. She also had five outstanding warrants. On June 1st, Patrick Howell of Chicago was arrested for violating the sex offender registry.

(WPXN-cf)-- Two Fighting Illini Volleyball Players have been selected to represent the United States in the Tokyo Olympics. Outside Hitter Michelle Bartsch-Hackley and setter Jordyn Poulter are set to make their debut in the Olympic Games this year. The games get underway July 23. 

 

 

(St. Louis-cf)-- Busch Stadium in St. Louis will be going back to full capacity next week. The Cardinals announced Monday Afternoon that tickets for select tickets will be as low as $6. The series will include June 14-16 against the Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates on June 24 and Arizona Diamondbacks June 28-30. Each ticket purchase will include a free hot dog.

(Chicago-cf)-- Fans will be allowed back on the North and South Side of Chicago at full capacity. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced that Wrigley and Guaranteed Rate Field will now be able to fill their stadiums. The restrictions will be lifted next Friday.

(Urbana-cf)-- The National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame released the 2022 ballot. Three Fighting Illini made the list including Moe Gardner, Kevin Hardy, and Simeon Rice. Gardner was a two time consensus All American in 89-90. Hardy was a 1995 Dick Butkus Award winner and First-Team All-American. Rice was a two time All-American, three time First Team Big Ten, and holds the school record in sacks.

The longest dead-period to date, due to the COVID-19 pandemic Universities are allowed to have athletes back on campus for the first time in 15 months. When it comes to the University of Illinois, there will be multiple local kids taking official visits. Those include Gibson City’s Aiden Laughry, and Iroquois West’s Clayton Leonard  for football and St. Joe Ogden’s Ty Pence in basketball.
