Cardinals Win NL Central with Win Over the Cubs

MLB

The St. Louis Cardinals have won their first division title in four years by blanking the Chicago Cubs. Jack Flaherty limited the Cubs to a pair of hits over seven innings of the Redbirds’ 9-0 victory. St. Louis grabbed an 8-0 lead by the third inning after dropping the first two games of the series. Matt Carpenter’s three-run blast gave the Cards an eight-run cushion. Dexter Fowler belted a two-run homer in the second and Paul Goldschmidt added a solo blast.

Tim Anderson won the AL batting title despite going 0-for-2 in the White Sox’s 5-3 win against the Tigers. Welington Castro’s two-run homer capped Chicago’s four-run sixth

Manager Joe Maddon will not be back with the Cubs next season after they failed to make the playoffs for the first time in five years.

Maddon and Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein announced the move before the team's season finale at St. Louis. Maddon's contract expired after Sunday's game.

NFL

The Bears managed to beat the Vikings, 16-6 after Mitchell Trubisky got knocked out of the game with a left shoulder injury on the opening possession. Backup Chase Daniel was 22 of 30 for 195 yards and a touchdown, hitting Tarik Cohen for a 10-yard score moments after replacing Trubisky.

Oakland Raiders beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-24

NASCAR

Chase Elliott overcame a major mistake to win NASCAR’s Cup playoff race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Elliott recovered from an earlier gaffe when he was leading on a restart, locked his wheels headed into the first turn and drove directly into a tire barrier.  Alex Bowman finished second in the race, Kevin Harvick finished third and was followed by Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Clint Bowyer, who was in danger of being eliminated from the playoffs before his fourth-place finish.

The PBL Panthers took on Milford in the Championship game of the Watseka Invitational. PBL Head Coach Lindsay Staloway says many girls contributed to get the win.
