(Illinois–jc)  A Park Forest man has been sentenced to one year in prison for threatening violence against federal immigration authorities.

Government attorneys said Michael D. Stover, 34, admitted that his social media post on July 7, 2025 was made knowing that it would be viewed as a threat to injury. Stover allegedly made previous postings advocating violence against government officials.

(Springfield-jm) — Illinois’ eight state run visitor centers, located within rest areas at interstates around the state, will be closing at the end of the month. The closures were independent of financial pressures according to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Operating the centers cost the state approximately $1.6 million per year. The areas where the centers are located will continue operating and all other services will be uninterrupted. The 20 employees who staffed the centers were all employed through third parties, not directly by the state. They sites closing include Oakwood in Vermilion County along with Marshall along Interstate 70 and Monee on Interstate 57

(Springfield–jc)  Illinois  Governor JB Pritzker Tuesday signed an Executive Order  establishing the Illinois Artificial Intelligence  Cabinet, a group of individuals from across industries and fields that will assess the various risks posed by AI to the safety of Illinoisans. As AI continues to rapidly advance, the Illinois AI Cabinet will advise the state government on preparing for and responding to AI-related incidents, identifying safeguards for public assets and infrastructure, and evaluating additional steps Illinois can take to strengthen AI safety and accountability. The Governor will seek input from state agency leaders and announce members of the cabinet in the coming weeks.

(St. Joseph-jm) — Two river gauges near St. Joseph are going to be ceasing operation at the end of the month. The U-S Geological Survey stream gages located on the Salt Fork and Spoon Rivers. The ceasing of operations is due to funding. The stream gauges collect data about water and nutrient levels, helping map floodplains and keeping neighbors informed with real time flood data.

(Rantoul–jc)  The Rantoul Township High School Buildings and Grounds Committee will look at summer projects for 20-27 when they meet on Thursday morning at the high school.  A maintenance shed project, replacing the fence at the football field-track field is also up for discussion. Future projects include the Girls Locker room and boys locker rooms  and roof repair on the East Wing and West Wing at the high school. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The narrative of the novel “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, in which the scientist Victor Frankenstein creates a monster and brings it to life, is a well-known cultural touchstone. But the details of the novel itself are not nearly as well-known. A new exhibit at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign explores Shelley’s life and career and provides context for her famous novel. It also celebrates the acquisition by the library a few years ago of a first edition of “Frankenstein.” The exhibit opens on Thursday at the U of I and runs through May next year.

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Supreme Court is currently debating whether people on home confinement and electronic monitoring pretrial should receive credits towards their prison sentence. The case surrounds a man who was sentenced before changes were made to state statute through the Pretrial Fairness Act. The man was convicted of aggravated domestic battery. His attorneys argue he should have received nearly 630 days of credit against his prison sentence for time he spent on home confinement and electronic monitoring before his trial. The state argues offenders can only receive pre-sentence credit when a supervising authority establishes terms and conditions of home detention and that a trial judge does not qualify for that role.

(Springfield-jm) – A new report shows that despite progress, Illinois is falling short of its lofty goals to reduce carbon emissions. The goal is net zero by 2050, but the state is only predicted to reduce emissions by 53 percent from the 2005 baseline. Experts say to make that goal, the state would need to accelerate the pace of emissions reductions. Among the suggestions is to transition every commercial vehicle to electric or reworking industrial standards to reduce emissions from producing common construction materials like cement. It could come at a financial and political cost. Another suggestion that could happen this fall, would require high powered projects like data centers to pay for their own energy and the infrastructure needed to supply it.

(Undated-jm) – The spike in gas prices continues. GasBuddy reported on Monday that average prices of both gasoline and diesel fuel rose in virtually every state in the last week with the Great Lakes states like Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin seeing their state averages go up by more than 30 cents per gallon for gasoline and over 50 cents per gallon of diesel due to refinery issues.  Illinois’ average price for gasoline is $4.88 per gallon, up 41 cents from last week and up 62 cents in the past two weeks. Nationally, the average price for gas is $4.44, up 19 cents from last week and 36 cents in the past two weeks. For diesel, the average price nationally is $6.49 per gallon, up 31 cents from last week and 63 cents in two weeks.

(East Lynn-jm) – An East Lynn man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a child and possessing child sexual abuse material has been sentenced to 50 years in prison. 35 year old Antonio Miranda received the sentence in Vermilion County court after pleading guilty to one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and one count of producing child sexual abuse material. Miranda was arrested in May 2024 following a search of his residence.

(Ford County-jm) – A railroad crossing near Paxton is closed for construction. The crossing at 100 North Road is closed this week while crews make repairs to the crossing. Work is expected to be completed by the end of the week.

(Champaign–jc)  –52nd District State Senator Paul Faraci, democrat from Champaign, announced new funding is available under the Illinois Grocery Initiative through the New Stores in Food Deserts, Equipment Upgrades and Grocery Rescue grant programs. It is 26 million dollars to address food deserts and prevent grocery store closures in communities across the state. The new Grocery Rescue Program will support efforts to reopen stores that have closed within the preceding 12 months.  The New Stores in Food Deserts Program will support the establishment of new grocery stores in food deserts.

(Champaign–jc)--  Firefighters and staff from the Champaign Fire Department, Neighborhood Services Department and Equity and Engagement Department, along with volunteers from the Christian Sheehan Smoke Alarm Blitz and the American Red Cross will be going door-to-door in a northcentral Champaign neighborhood on , Saturday, offering to check smoke alarms and installing free smoke alarms in homes that need them.  This Smoke Alarm Blitz, beginning at 8:00 a.m., will include approximately 100 homes within the boundaries of Prospect Avenue to the east; Mattis Avenue to the west; Bradley Avenue to the north; and Mimosa Drive to the south. The Champaign Fire Department reminds everyone that smoke alarms save lives.

(Illinois–dm)-As farmers move equipment along roadways during the fall harvest season, Illinois State Police encourage drivers to share the road and be patient. Illinois Department of Transportation data reported 275 crashes involving farm tractors or equipment in 2024. ISP also encouraged farmers to avoid rush hours, busier highways and times of low visibility when possible.

(Champaign-jm) – One person has been arrested following a Sunday evening stabbing in Champaign. It happened in the 1900 block of Center Drive just after 7pm. On scene officers located a 33 year old man who was injured. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released. Police arrested 42 year old Deandre Thomas. He’s charged with aggravated battery, armed robbery and possessing a weapon as a felon. A detention hearing is scheduled for tomorrow.

(Urbana-jm) – The University of Illinois Police Department and Champaign County Crimestoppers are looking for help in solving several scooter thefts that happened at the same place on campus. The thefts happened between August 24th and September 8th at Bousfield Hall. Multiple scooters were stolen, generally during the overnight hours. Some had their locks cut and several scooter chargers were also stolen. Anyone with information is asked to call UIPD or Champaign County Crimestoppers.

(Urbana-jm) – The University of Illinois organization, Students for Environmental Concerns, will hold a protest on campus Friday to oppose data centers. The group says the protest will start at noon. Participants will gather on the Main Quad in front of Foellinger Auditorium, march the length of the Main Quad and rally at the Alma Mater. The group is protesting hyperscale data centers which they say affects the surrounding communities by creating 24 hour noise, emitting air pollution, disrupting wildlife, overloading power grids and contaminating water and soil.

(Urbana–jc0The Illinois Capital Development Board , in partnership with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, state and local officials, construction partners, and members of the campus community, joined together to celebrate the topping out of the new Illini Hall.  The topping out marks the completion of the building’s structural steel frame, a significant milestone on Phase 3 of the Illini Hall Replacement and Altgeld Hall Renovation Project. The new 140,000 square foot facility will house several U of I Departments, classrooms and research labs.

(The Center Square) – The Federal Reserve board’s recent decision to raise interest rates a quarter point may have expensive implications for Illinois taxpayers.

Professor Justin Marlowe, director of the Center for Municipal Finance at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy, said state and local governments are already borrowing at higher interest rates because of their relatively low credit ratings and concerns about their long-term financial sustainability. Increasing interest rates make that problem worse. It makes it that much more expensive when cities and counties and school districts in the state have to go out to borrow money to finance infrastructure projects. Illinois has the lowest credit rating of any U.S. state. Marlowe said the Fed’s interest rate hikes are eventually priced into the rates we all pay, including governments.

(SPRINGFIELD –dm) The Illinois Department of Employment Security announced Friday that the unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in August, down -0.2 percentage point from July, and up +0.4 percentage point from the same month, one year ago, based on data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The revised July unemployment rate was 4.9 percent. Total nonfarm payrolls decreased over-the-month in August, down -4,400 (-0.1%) to 6,175,600. The July monthly change in payrolls was revised from the preliminary report, from +11,700 to +15,300. The August payroll jobs estimate and unemployment rate reflect activity for the week including the 12th.

Danville, IL- Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden has identified the gentleman who was found on the Vermilion River bank, below Memorial Bridge on Saturday night, as 24-year-old Trevor A. Karuzis of Catlin. Mr. Karuzis’ family has been notified. An autopsy is scheduled for this coming week. No other information is being released at this time. The Danville Police Department and the Vermilion County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate.

(Paxton-jm) – The former treasurer of the PBL Choral Booster Club is now facing a felony theft charge after she was accused of stealing $21,000 from the club's bank account. Tara Long was charged with theft between $10,000 and $100,000. The PBL School District reported about 60 fraudulent withdrawals were allegedly made from the bank account between June and August. Long is due back in court September 29th.

(Paxton–jc)  –  City of Paxton leaders have set Tuesday night at 6, for a town hall meeting with area legislators.  Action by the council, may be accepting a recommendation of the  Planning and Zoning Commission Regarding a Special Use Permit for the property located  at 727 E Summer. The open forum will feature 53rd District State Senator  Chris Balkema and 106th District State Representative Jason  Bunting. The meeting will take place on the second floor of city hall. 

(The Center Square) - The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation has taken action against two companies that allegedly provided unlicensed student loan debt relief. IDFPR entered a consent order with Consulting Cafe, LLC DBA Smartfile Services, under which the company is prohibited from engaging in student loan debt relief services in Illinois and is required to provide full restitution of $47,929.44 to affected Illinois consumers. The company is also required to pay a $50,000 penalty. IDFPR also issued a cease and desist order, order of restitution and order of fine against Capital Core Advisors, LLC for unlicensed conduct and other violations of the Debt Settlement Consumer Protection Act. If the order becomes a final administrative order, the company will be required to cease and desist unlicensed activity, provide restitution to Illinois consumers of more than $79,500 and pay a $318,000 fine.

(The Center Square) - Illinois is tied with New York for 42nd place in Heritage Foundation’s latest election integrity scorecard. The updated report released earlier this month gave Illinois zero out of a possible 13 points for citizenship verification. Illinois got zero out of a possible three points for election litigation procedures, restriction of same day registration, restriction of automatic registration, restriction of private funding of election officials or government agencies and restriction of foreign funding for state ballot measures or referendums. Illinois received 16 out of 21 points for accuracy of voter registration lists. Tennessee ranked first on the scorecard. Indiana ranked 7th, Missouri 8th, Iowa tied for 9th, Kentucky tied for 14th and Wisconsin 17th. Hawaii finished last, just before California.

Doctor Grove grew up in Paxton and was a lodge member for decades. A bench honoring Doctor Grove was dedicated on Saturday in downtown Paxton.

(Champaign County-jm) – There will now be a contested race for the 103rd House District. Despite being federally indicted on 10 counts including wire fraud and conspiracy, State Representative Carol Ammons has been pushing forward with her campaign. She was the only candidate on the ballot for the 103rd District until Champaign businessman Keith Smith filed as a write-in candidate. Ammons is also facing an ongoing house investigation over her conduct.

(Gifford–jc)  No one was hurt Friday morning as a small aircraft made an emergency landing in northern Champaign County near Gifford. Authorities say the incident happened just before 10 in the morning between the village of Gifford and Gordyville. No injuries were reported. The emergency was weather related.

Total nonfarm payrolls decreased zero--point-one percent over the month in August, to 6 Million,175 thousand.

(Undated-jm) – Thanksgiving is about two months away but Triple A is advising travelers to book flights and hotels now if they can. They say a recent consumer survey found many travelers in Illinois waited to book flights, hoping prices would drop. Most times however, the prices went up and people paid more. Jet fuel and regular gas prices continue to rise, which could make travel costs even more expensive this year. They say families should compare the cost of flying versus driving before making a decision.

(Urbana-jm) – An Urbana man has been arrested for possessing child sexual abuse materials. 34 year old Brandon Morgan was arrested following a search of his home in Urbana this week. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raouls office is charging Morgan with 3 counts of dissemination of child pornography, each punishable up to 30 years in prison, and 4 counts of possession of child sexual abuse material, each up to 7 years in prison. He was ordered to remain detained pre-trial.

(Urbana–jc)  The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois Thursday approved funding for the new Drug Discovery and Cancer Research Pavilion at the University of Illinois Chicago. The project’s estimated 232 million dollar cost will be funded through state of Illinois capital appropriations, and the college’s budget and some gifts The facility will be part of the college's Illinois Innovation Network hub with labs, offices and research space.

The price Thursday is 30 cents higher than it was one week before and one dollar 34 cents  higher than it was a year ago. Diesel prices jumped 15 cents overnight in Illinois, from  6 dollars 26 cents per gallon on Wednesday to 6 dollars 41 cents Thursday. The state’s average price for diesel one year ago was 3 dollars 77 cents per gallon.

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois law requires attorneys to file a petition to deny pretrial release within 21 days of a person's arrest and release. However, the Illinois Supreme Court is currently debating whether that requirement is mandatory or directory. The case revolves around a man who was serving time in the Illinois Department of Corrections for an unrelated offense when the state charged him with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. His attorneys argue the state did not file a petition for pretrial release during this first court appearance, instead, waited four months to file the petition to deny release. The Illinois Attorney General’s office said the arrest for a new offense does not begin until the authority for the prior detention ends. In other words, the 21 day timeline does not begin until after the person has served their initial sentence. The state argues judges should look at the 21 day window on a case by case basis, while the attorneys for the plaintiff say the selection of a three weeks suggests an absolute limit.

These programs are designed to help start and grow small businesses in the City of Champaign by providing financial assistance and technical support to local entrepreneurs and existing small businesses. They include up to 10 thousand dollars  reimbursement for entrepreneurs starting a new business, or for businesses less than two years old.  They also have a growing business program. (Illinois–dm)-The Food & Drug Administration has classified six recalled hand soaps sold in 15 states as Class II due to potential bacterial contamination. St. Louis-based Intercon Chemical Company initially recalled the six products in June, but the FDA updated its classification last Friday. Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin are among the states where the soaps were sold. The recalled products include Intercon Foaming Pear Hand Soap with Aloe, Clearly Better Foaming Pear Hand Soap, Summit 150 Foaming Hand Soap, Vestis Foaming Hand Soap and two Laura Lynn soaps distributed by Ingles Markets.

According to Triple A, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Illinois jumped from 4 dollars .53 cents Tuesday to nearly 4 dollars 63 cents Wednesday. The national average increased 4 cents to 4 dollars 37 cents on the average. The price for a gallon diesel in Illinois was also up another dime to 6 dollars 26 cents per gallon

(Champaign County-jm) — State Representative Carol Ammons and her husband Champaign County Clerk Aaron Ammons will now go on trial in December in their federal court case. The couple filed motions asking their upcoming pretrial hearing and opening day of trial to be postponed after their initial hearing was set for Election Day, November 3rd, with the trial beginning November 17th, the deadline in which all election ballots including absentee and mail in ballots, must be counted.

(Paxton-jm) – A Chicago man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for possessing fentanyl and battering a peace officer.  Rashawn Carter pleaded guilty to one count of manufacturing and delivering 400-900 grams of fentanyl and one count of battery of a peace officer. Carter was arrested after he fled from an Illinois State Trooper who pulled him over near Paxton back in June. He was located up in a tree and arrested.

(Paxton-jm) – Two people accused of committing an armed robbery at a Paxton park last year have been sentenced following plea deals. 23 year old Stefonce Moffitt was sentenced to 21 years in prison after pleading guilty to armed robbery. In exchange, a charge of theft between $500–$1000 and driving on a suspended license was dismissed. 24 year old Devin Starkey was sentenced to 23 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of armed robbery. A charge of theft between $500-$1000 was dismissed. A third defendant, 23 year old Jamarh Gray, is charged with a single count of armed robbery. His trial is set for October 5th. The armed robbery occurred at Fulton Park in March of 2025.

(Springfield–jc)  – The state of  Illinois continues to wait on the federal government concerning a requested presidential major disaster declaration from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for severe weather that impacted eight Illinois counties last month. If approved, F-E-M-A grants would be available for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help residents and businesses.  Governor Pritzker did extend his August 18th  disaster proclamation for another 30 days. The FEMA request covers Champaign, Cook, Ford, Fulton, McLean, Tazewell, Vermilion and Will counties.

(Springfield–jc)  – By refusing to join a federal tax credit scholarship program, Illinois may be forgoing more than 1 Billion Dollars in education funding.

Illinois Governor  J-.B Pritzker has not yet announced whether Illinois will opt in or opt out of the program that is set to take effect on January First. American Federation for Children Senior Fellow Patrick Graff said the scholarships would take no money from the public school system. The initiative provides individual tax credits up to One Thousand 700 Dollars for donations to eligible scholarship-granting organizations. Graff said people in states that opt out could still receive a tax credit by donating to organizations in states that opt in.

(Washington–jc)  Illinois Republican U.S. Rep. Mary Miller has introduced legislation she says will protect college students’ personal information from being shared without their consent for partisan voter registration drives.

Miller introduced the Student Voter Data Protection Act on Wednesday. The measure requires student participation in such data sharing to be opt-in rather than opt-out.

(Springfield-jm) — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is working to improve a law that took effect in January and gave landowners and farmers more flexibility to hunt deer on their property. Farmers across the state told lawmakers nuisance deer cause expansive and costly damage. During a Joint Committee on Administrative Rules meeting, members of the committee expressed concerns about the vagueness of the law and asked for some clearer guidance on the law.

(Champaign-jm) – Duncan Road in Champaign will close this week to complete construction. The road will close today until noon between Bloomington Road and Marianna Drive. The overpass portion will be closed to traffic but access will remain to properties in the area. The city of Champaign says the contractor will work to end construction as soon as possible to minimize disruptions.

(Champaign–jc)  –The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a duplex in the 28 hundred block of Heritage Drive Wednesday morning just after 9.  Fire crews quickly extinguished this fire.  Once on the scene, firefighters reported light smoke coming from the eaves of the home.  A single hose line was extended to extinguish this fire that originated in the wall.   The cause of this fire is accidental and was attributed to electrical work being performed in the home.  No injuries were reported.

(St Louis–jc)  – A federal judge in St. Louis has sentenced a Pakistani national who ran a Ponzi scheme that bilked investors out of millions of dollars to 11 years in prison. Prosecutors said Siddharth Jawahar, 38, was in the United States illegally. From 2016 to 2023, Jawahar allegedly took in about 35 million dollars from investors in his company, Swiftarc Capital L-L-C while investing about $10 million and fueling an extravagant lifestyle.

(Champaign–jc)  –Champaign Police were dispatched to the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue just before 6-30 Monday night multiple reports of a shooting with injuries in the area. As officers arrived, they quickly located a 24-year-old man with potentially life-threatening wounds. Police personnel immediately rendered medical aid on-scene with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department until the man could be transported to an area hospital. He remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition. The initial investigation indicates that the victim was outside of his home when shots were fired and the victim was struck. In Champaign and Urbana most gas stations are at 4 dollars 29 cents. Casey’s and Circle K in Rantoul have gas at 4 dollars 49 cents. In Paxton and Gibson City the price for a gallon of gas at the area Casey’s stores is 4 dollars 49 cents. The mobile station in Gilman has gas at 4 dollars 39 cents and the Casey’s in Milford, has is 4 dollars 42 cents. Illinois gas prices are 60 to 70 cents higher than neighboring states. The average price for a gallon of diesel in Illinois is $6.22 a gallon, just under the national average.

The Champaign County Regional Planning Commission administers the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program or LIHEAP for the county. Eligible households include adults 60 and older, individuals with a disability, families with children 5 years and under, households that are disconnected from their utilities, have a disconnection notice or have less than 25 percent in their propane tank.

(Springfield–jc)  – The Legislative Ethics Commission has appointed David E. Risley as acting legislative inspector general, following the resignation of Michael McCuskey last week. Commission members said in a statement that Risley brings more than 30 years of experience in investigations and prosecutorial work as a former Assistant U.S. Attorney. McCuskey’s resignation is set to take effect Sept. 30, and Risley is scheduled to start his new duties Oct. 1.

(Northern Illinois–jc)– An Exxon Mobil fuel refinery southwest of Chicago went offline over the weekend, causing a halting of production and driving already heightened fuel costs even higher for Midwestern motorists, who likely won’t see prices ease until days later. The cost for a regular gallon of fuel in Illinois was $4.53 Tuesday, up nearly 5 cents from Monday and up roughly 23 cents in the past week. Meanwhile, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota were among the top five highest price increases for regular fuel in the past week. A full power outage lasting roughly three and a half hours at the Exxon Mobil refinery in Joliet resulted in a production shutdown Sunday.

(Gibson City-jm) – A Gibson City man is looking at a lengthy prison term. 27-year-old Jonathan Caudill was found guilty Friday of three counts of possession of child pornography. He faces up to 45 years in prison when sentenced next month. A jury returned guilty verdicts against Caudill on all three Class 1 felony counts following a two-day trial in Ford County Circuit Court. The Ford County Chronicle reports a sentencing hearing was set for 9 am Thursday, October 29, before Judge Matt Fitton.

(Rantoul-jm) – The Rantoul Police Department has unveiled a new online safety tool which they said will allow officers to help families during emergencies. Parents, guardians and caregivers can give information about a child or adult with cognitive or developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, memory impairments, communication challenges, or conditions that affect how they respond or communicate. Rantoul Police officials say families can submit information like known triggers or sensitivities, calming techniques and emergency contacts. That information is submitted through a voluntary online safety portal. Then, if police are responding to a missing-person report or if someone is lost or disoriented, officers will understand the individual’s unique needs to create a safer and more effective response.

(The Center Square) – Illinois officials have announced more than $20 million in capital grants to establish manufacturing training academies at five community colleges. Illinois Governor  J.B. Pritzker’s office, says  the grants include $6 million awards to Kaskaskia College in Centralia and Parkland College in Champaign, $3 million each for Illinois Central College in East Peoria and Lake Land College in Mattoon, and $2,369,150 for Lewis & Clark College in Godfrey.

(The Center Square) - A state commission report showed Illinois brought in more revenue than expected to begin the 2027 fiscal year. The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability’s monthly report on state revenue and financials for June, released this month, showed an 8.2% increase in revenue collected by the state compared to June, 2025. Commission Co-Chair Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer, R-Jacksonville, told The Center Square that while revenue for the state through income and sales taxes are up, there are other economic factors that indicate the state’s fiscal situation. Also up year-over-year is the unemployment rate, sitting at an average of 5.1%  – up 0.7% compared to the same period in 2025. (Savoy-jm) – Champaign County Crime Stoppers is seeking a tip to locate two people who stole a misplaced wallet. The theft happened the afternoon of August 23rd at the Walmart in Savoy. Officials said Champaign County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched in reference to a theft; they learned a woman accidentally dropped her wallet inside the store and left without realizing it was missing. When deputies reviewed surveillance footage, they discovered that two people picked up the wallet, concealed it and left the store. Officials said one of the suspects, a woman, has been identified and is wanted for questioning in reference to this incident. The other suspect, a man, remains unidentified; he is also wanted for questioning. The man was described as White with a black beard and glasses. He wore a blue T-shirt, black shorts, and black Crocs. He and the woman left Walmart in a gold GMC Terrain.

CHAMPAIGN - Champaign Police were dispatched to the 300 block of West Eureka Street around 8-30 Sunday night, following reports of a shooting with injuries in the area. As officers arrived, they quickly located a 40-year-old Champaign man with a non-life-threatening graze wound from a gunshot. The man was transported to an area hospital in stable condition. He received immediate medical treatment and was later released. Champaign Police ask that anyone who has additional information please call 217-351-4545. (The Center Square) - A new study says Illinois is the third best state in the country for hybrid workers. Wolfstone Digital analyzed the availability of jobs with hybrid options, internet speeds, cost of living, income tax rates and average commute times. Researchers said 5.75% of positions in Illinois offer hybrid options. They also cited the state income tax rate of 4.95% and a top ten rating for internet speed. New York finished first in the study, followed by Iowa. Wisconsin ranked last, due to a high cost of living index, slow internet speed and an income tax rate of 7.65%.

(Urbana–jc)  Roads along Interstate 74 near Urbana are back open again this morning after a vehicle crash on Sunday night. Police say the crash happened in a construction zone in the area near mile marker 200. No injuries were reported.

The tour includes stops at a family farm in Waverly, the Illinois Soybean Association and the Chicago Board of Trade. (Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Department of Public Health has released its fall immunization guidance for flu, RSV and COVID-19 ahead of the 2026-27 respiratory virus season. IDPH recommends the flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older. For RSV, the agency recommends vaccination for pregnant people between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy if they have not previously been vaccinated. RSV immunization is also recommended for infants younger than 8 months without maternal vaccine protection, children 8 months through 19 months at increased risk of severe illness, adults 50-74 at increased risk and adults 75 and older if they have not been previously vaccinated. IDPH recommends COVID-19 vaccination for children ages 6 months through 23 months, children ages 2–18 in certain risk groups, pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding women, those planning pregnancy and all adults 19 and older.

(Illinois–jc) Public universities across Illinois are reporting differing 10-day enrollment numbers, with some schools announcing record-breaking data, as other schools have reported modest declines. Incoming freshman classes have also trended upward across multiple schools this year. Across 12 different public universities in Illinois, eight have released fall 2026 10-day enrollment census numbers, which are required to be reported to the Illinois Board of Higher Education each semester. Among the eight, five saw enrollment increase year-over-year, including two of the three within the University of Illinois System and both Southern Illinois University campuses.

(The Center Square) - Five religious healthcare associations and two new individual plaintiffs have joined a federal lawsuit challenging Illinois’ medical aid in dying law. A statement from Thomas More Society said the new organizational plaintiffs represent over 95% of Catholic health institutions in Illinois who object to the laws mandates on conscience grounds.

(The Center Square) – NASCAR will not return to the streets of downtown Chicago in 2027, a decision one Illinois fiscal policy advocate says could save taxpayers money as the city and state face ongoing budget pressures. The NASCAR Chicago Street Race debuted in 2023 and ran for three years through 2025. After taking a year off in 2026, NASCAR had hoped to bring the event back to Grant Park in 2027. But the organization announced in August there was not enough time to finalize plans with city and state officials. Instead they will go back to Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet. 

(Paxton-jm) – About 50 motorcyclists rode through Central Illinois honoring the lives lost on 9-11 Sunday. The group left Danville riding through Rossville, Hoopeston and Rankin before stopping for lunch in Paxton at the firehouse. After lunch they rode down to Ludlow, Rantoul and over to Gifford and Potomac on their way back to Danville. The Rotary Club of Champaign received the Parkland College Foundation’s Community Impact Award, which recognizes an organization whose partnership has made a significant and Rotary Club of Champaign lasting contribution to Parkland College and the students it serves. Since 1986, the Rotary Club of Champaign has provided over $165,000 in scholarship support for Parkland students.

Democrats and Republicans are calling for a stronger Legislative Inspector General and ethics reforms to address issues at the State Capitol. Michael McCuskey is leaving the legislative watchdog post following scandals in the Illinois House including concerns over investigations he conducted.

(Urbana–jc)  –The University of Illinois System’s fall enrollment has topped 102,000 for the first time, extending its string of record fall enrollments, with growth driven largely by new in-state undergraduates. Undergraduate enrollment rose 3-point-four percent  overall, with Illinois residents up just over 4 percent across the system’s universities in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield. Including this fall’s total enrollment growth of just over one percent and a new record of 102,267 students, system enrollment has grown 25 point five percent over the past decade.

Shields Auto Center is participating with the Ford Global Food Drive. Last year the Rantoul area  409 pounds of food and the goal this year is to beat that amount. The effort runs now through September 30th.

The Commonwealth Foundation gave Illinois an F in its evaluation of public sector labor laws. The group’s latest report cited the state’s policies allowing card checks, a qualified right to strike and payroll deductions, as well as incorporating a fundamental right to organize in the state's constitution and potentially removing any restrictions of collective bargaining.The report gave neighboring Indiana an A-Plus. Iowa and Wisconsin got As.

(Gibson City-jm) — Carbon sequestration could be back on the table in the western part of Ford County. One Earth Energy is seeking regulatory approval for their carbon capture and storage project. They are proposing to build a 5 point 4 mile, 8 inch diameter pipeline to transport liquefied carbon dioxide from their Gibson City plant to a facility outside of Saybrook.

(Mahomet-jm) – Teachers in the Mahomet Seymour School District are beginning the steps that could lead to a strike. They have been working since June without a contract. The district offered the union their last best final offer but union leaders say the main sticking point is teacher pay, which they say the district can afford without raising taxes. The district's proposal and the union's proposal are about $560 thousand apart.

(Undated-jm) – Two records for gasoline and diesel fuel prices were set just days apart in the last week. GasBuddy announced on Friday that diesel fuel had reached its highest price ever — $5.87 per gallon, surpassing the previous record set in 2022 by five cents. The price of diesel fuel is more than $2 higher than it was one year ago, and GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan said $6 fuel is a realistic possibility in the weeks ahead. As for gasoline, the national average price of gas on Labor Day was $4.09, surpassing GasBuddy’s prediction of $4.03. It’s a record price for the holiday by 26 cents ($3.83 in 2012) and 93 cents higher than Labor Day 2025. Illinois’ average price of gasoline rose by only two cents in the last week, reaching $4.25 per gallon.

(Paxton-jm) – A 37-year-old man from Will County was arrested over the weekend in a sting operation after he thought he was meeting a 15-year-old girl at a park in Paxton. At around 8:20 p.m. Saturday, Joseph M. Kummer of Custer Park was taken into custody at Pells Park on the charges of traveling to meet a minor, indecent solicitation of a child and solicitation to meet a child. This arrest came after an Internet Crimes Against Children investigation led to Kummer going to the park to meet with a 15-year-old girl he had been talking with online. The teen was actually an undercover Paxton Police Officer. After he was arrested and taken to the Ford County Jail, he allegedly threatened to harm a correctional officer and fought with staff as he was being escorted to his cell. He was then also charged with aggravated assault to a corrections officer and resisting a peace officer.

(Chebanse-jm) – A Chebanse man was arrested by the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office and the US Marshal’s Great Lake Regional Fugitive Task Force on Tuesday for “sexual-related offenses.” In a post on social media, the sheriff’s office said 34-year-old Jacob D. Clark was taken into custody for the following: use of a child in a sexual performance, tampering with a witness, victim; no contact with witnesses/co-defendants, Transmission of material harmful to minors and unlawful use of a two-way communications device. The sheriff’s office said Clark also had multiple arrest warrants issued out of Florida, and an outstanding arrest warrant out of Will County.

(Champaign-jm) – Those traveling on I-57 near I-74 in Champaign, listen up. Starting today the Northbound I-57 to westbound I-74 and Southbound I-57 to eastbound I-74 ramps are closing for two weeks. IDOT says crews are completing the final bridge deck improvements.

(Champaign-jm) – Two people were arrested on the University of Illinois campus after police responded to a dorm hall for reports of an armed person, prompting an Illini Alert. The U of I Police Department said in a news release that officers were dispatched to Bousfield Hall at 11:15 p.m. on Monday. Reports indicated that two people were knocking on doors and threatening residents. Officers established a perimeter around the building while Real-Time Information Center specialists reviewed security camera footage to locate the suspects. The suspects were quickly found, and detained. UIPD officials identified one suspect as 20-year-old Davante Trass of Urbana. He was booked into the Champaign County Jail on preliminary charges of making a terrorist threat and criminal trespass to state-supported land. The other suspect is a juvenile who was preliminarily charged with making a terrorist threat, criminal trespass to state-supported land and obstructing identification. The juvenile was later released to their guardian under local screening protocols and state law. Both suspects received letters that barred them from all University of Illinois property.

(Hoopeston-jm) – Hoopeston firefighters are investigating a house fire. It happened in the 300 block of East Thompson Avenue. Firefighters from Rossville were called to assist.

(Bloomington-jm) – Bloomington’s Central Illinois Regional Airport announced Tuesday that it was awarded just over $12 million in grant money from the FAA. The airport said the grant will help fund the second phase of the airport’s Runway Rehabilitation Project. That project will include reconstruction, pavement repair and intersection lights for the runway. This grant will cover 90% of the project’s total cost, while the state and airport will cover the remaining cost. Work is expected to begin in May.

(Texas–jc)  Democrat Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is scheduled to join Texas Democrats at a press conference in Dallas later today. In August 2025, Pritzker welcomed 40 Democratic state lawmakers to Illinois after they absconded in protest against a congressional redistricting bill put forth by Texas Republicans.

Pritzker is the honorary chair of a new political action committee to support Democratic Party candidates and organizations.

(Springfield–jc)  A majority of American voters agree that a student’s chosen major or field of study should be considered before approving federal student loans, according to a new poll.  The Center Square Voters’ Voice Poll found that 54 percent of respondents totally agree that a student’s chosen major or field of study should be among the factors, while 31 percent totally disagree. Student loan debt remains significant nationwide, with the federal student loan portfolio reaching approximately One point 8 Trillion dollars.

(The Center Square) – A new Amtrak maintenance facility to be constructed in Bridgeport and the proposal for a new White Sox stadium on the land of Amtrak’s current facility have drawn pushback from community members opposed to the change. Plans were unveiled by likely future Chicago White Sox owner Justin Ishbia  for the construction of a roughly $900 million mixed-use development called “The Railyard” in the South Loop.

(chicago–jc)  A new survey says 78 percent of Chicago Bears fans drink alcohol during games, more than any other fan base in the National Football League.

The Action Network measured food and beverage consumption across all 32 teams and found that Bears fans and Atlanta Falcons fans led the league by consuming an average of 2. Point seven drinks inside the stadium. Beer prices at Soldier Field generally range between $10 and $16. Bears fans ranked fourth overall in total game-day calories, averaging 990 calories per game from beer and hot dogs.  The Bears are scheduled to open the season at Carolina on Sunday.

(Undated-jm) – High school students at two area high schools will now be able to receive dual credit through the University of Illinois. Paxton Buckley Loda and Rantoul Township High School are among the 21 high schools from throughout the state participating in the program. The 2026-2027 academic year is the second year of the Dual Credit @ Illinois initiative and the official debut of the Learning Accelerator. The dual-credit catalogue includes four 100-level courses, representing the Colleges of ACES, Liberal Arts & Sciences, Media and Education. Those courses are: ACES 102: Introduction to Sustainable Food Systems, ASTR 150: Killer-Skies: Astro-Disaster, MACS 100: Introduction to Popular TV and Movies and SPED 117: The Culture of Disability. Students who enroll in the four dual-credit courses will get a tangible sense of what the college experience feels like at Illinois, with access to the university’s library system and the possibility of traveling to campus to receive an i-Card.

(Undated-m) – Federal prosecutors are warning the public about scammers following recent reports of fraudulent phone calls. The U-S Attorney’s Office for the Central District of Illinois said scammers may claim to be their attorneys, spoof their number and even use real staff members names. Calls may include threats and demands for payment. While no specific incidents were included, they say the U–S Attorney's Office does not request money, personal financial information or sensitive identifying details over the phone.

(Hoopeston-jm) - A Rankin man was arrested for violating the conditions of the sex offender registry while at the Sweet Corn Festival in Hoopeston. Hoopeston Police say they were running information on 57 year old Richard Mirto of Rankin for a traffic violation when it was discovered he was in violation. He was arrested on charges of being a sexual predator in a public park, which is a violation of his release. He was processed and released with a notice to appear.

Regan Deering, Republican from Decatur is calling for greater accountability in Illinois schools following concerns about academic performance at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills. During a recent appearance on Newsmax, education whistleblower and author Geno Young said a tenured Hillcrest teacher told him the school was testing at about a fourth-grade level across academic subjects. Hillcrest has an about 81% graduation rate. Deering, a former educator and current school board member, said such performance would represent a serious failure to prepare students for life after high school. She said students must develop strong reading skills early because academic expectations shift from learning to read to reading to learn.

The funding comes from the Teacher Vacancy Grant Pilot Program administered by the Illinois State Board of Education to support efforts to recruit, prepare and retain educators. Locally, Cissna Park is receiving just over $58,000; Hoopeston Area $85,000; Watseka $98,000; PBL $58,000; Rantoul City Schools and Rantoul Township High School almost $62,000 each.

University of Illinois Police along with the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics is announcing a new traffic pattern for this season. (Gibson City-jm) – The Harvest Moon Drive in Theatre in Gibson City will host a celebration of life this weekend to honor their founder and longtime owner. On Saturday, the theatre is inviting the public to honor Mike Harroun, who passed away in July. Harroun reopened the drive-in theatre in 1989. The celebration of life will begin at 5pm. It’s open and free to anyone who wants to attend. If you want to stay for the movie afterwards, you do still need to pay admission at that point.

(Springfield–jc)  The Illinois Flash Index posted a modest but unexpected gain in August 2026, rising to 101.5 from 101.2 in July. Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois Fred Giertz says the increase was driven by strong state tax revenue growth and a decline in Illinois’ unemployment rate,.The Index remains within the relatively narrow range it has occupied for more than a year, signaling continued but measured economic expansion. A key contributor to August’s increase was the strength of Illinois tax revenues. 

(Springfield–jc)  – The Illinois Department of Public Health  is responding to an outbreak of measles in Douglas County, involving at least four cases. An outbreak is defined as three or more cases that are connected by a common exposure source or epidemiological link. State Health Department officials are working with local health departments to identify residents who were exposed to patients during their infectious period and offer vaccination to those who are high-risk, as well as others in the community. 

(Washington-jm) – While negotiations over a new Farm Bill remain stalled in Washington, U–S Department of Agriculture officials say there is still momentum on Capitol Hill to get a comprehensive bill across the finish line. The uncertainty comes as farmers gather at the Farm Progress Show in Boone Iowa this week, where the outlook on the farm economy remains cautious but increasingly optimistic. The farm bill is intended to provide farmers with a long term federal safety net, but some significant changes to farm programs have already been made through the Working Families Tax Cuts Act. Those changes include increased payments through the Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs. The payments are expected to begin going out at the start of the new fiscal year on October 1st.

(Urbana-jm) —- The University of Illinois Police Department is investigating a pair of apartment burglaries that happened last week. The two reports came from the area of Springfield Avenue and Sixth Street. There were no signs of forced entry into either apartment and the door to one of the residences was confirmed to have been unlocked. In addition, entrances to the apartment building had been intentionally obstructed from closing and securing properly.

(The Center Square) – President Donald Trump’s administration is touting a crackdown on fraudulent commercial driver's license schools and unsafe truck drivers, but a Rockford trucking executive says federal officials are addressing the symptoms of a much larger problem. The U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced Operation Highway Shield, a federal enforcement effort targeting unsafe commercial drivers, fraudulent credentials and other alleged violations in the trucking industry.

Illinois still has the lowest credit rating of any U.S. state. Indiana, Iowa and Missouri have AAA ratings from S&P Global. Wisconsin has an AA+. Kentucky has an A+.

(Hoopeston-jm) – A Watseka man is facing multiple felony charges. Eli Alexander was arrested by Hoopeston police after they received multiple calls reporting theft. An investigation led police to Alexander. He’s charged with four counts of burglary to a vehicle and one count each of burglary to a garage, theft and possession of another’s credit or debit card.

(Champaign–jc)  - The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a single-family home in the 900 block of North Fourth Street Tuesday morning around 4-30. Fire crews quickly extinguished this fire.     Once on the scene, firefighters reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the first floor with everyone outside the home.    One occupant was treated on scene and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation of minor injuries.  There were no firefighter injuries reported.

(The Center Square) – A Central Illinois elected county auditor has been asked to step down after a series of finance issues occurred under her leadership in recent years. Four-term elected McLean County Auditor Michelle Anderson, a Republican, is being asked to step down from her elected office by her own party. 

Political and government leaders in the county have said Anderson’s 18 years in the role has led to unnecessary risk and costs to county taxpayers, especially in recent years. Connie Beard, chairman of the McLean County Republicans, told The Center Square the county party’s committee voted unanimously after considering issues for months, like late payments, leading to unnecessary fees for the county.

(The Center Square) – A Mahomet man has been charged with fraud and failing to pay employment taxes to the Internal Revenue Service. Prosecutors charged Hans Lee Grotelueschen, 56, with failing to pay the employer’s share of more than $859,000 collected from workers at this Champaign based business, YG Financial Group, from 2018 through 2024. Grotelueschen was also accused of fraudulently obtaining and improperly using pandemic era loans.

(Rantoul-jm) – Champaign County Crimestoppers and Rantoul Police are seeking the public's help in identifying the person who committed a hit and run crash in Rantoul. It happened around 12:30pm  on July 31st in the parking lot of the Rantoul Walmart. They say a male exited Walmart and entered a gray Audi SUV with Florida plate. As he was backing out, he struck the rear driver’s side quarter panel of a second vehicle causing over $1,000 in damage before leaving the scene. The suspect is described as a slim black male wearing a black t shirt, black shorts and white and pink shoes.

(Mahomet–jc)  An incident along Interstate 72 near Mahomet in Champaign County caused traffic delays for several hours Monday morning and early afternoon. All lanes were closed and diverted near Mahomet. Authorities say a semi tractor trailer caught fire.

(Champaign County–jc)  – The Champaign County Residential Electronics Collection  event this fall will take place on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 8am to noon at Parkland College.  Registration for this event opens on Tuesday, September First. To attend the  event, residents of Champaign County must register online in advance on line  The online registration process allows residents to reserve an available 15-minute time slot between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 10. 

(Springfield–dm)-The Illinois treasurer’s office made $1.45 billion in investment earnings from the state investment portfolio during fiscal year 2026, according to a statement from Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs. The agency said it made nearly $759 million in gross investment earnings for cities, school districts, counties and other units of government through the Illinois Funds local government investment pool.

WATSEKA, Ill. — Iroquois Memorial Hospital will hold its September Know Your Numbers Lab Fair Sept. 14-19 at the hospital in Watseka and at IMH clinic locations in Gilman, Kentland, Milford and St. Anne on select days. No appointment is necessary. The Lab Fair gives area residents an opportunity to have routine blood work completed for $65. Several additional screenings are also available for an added cost.They include Ferritin testing , a thyroid profile and T-S-H testing A-One-C and vitamin level test are also options, Lab Fair dates and times vary by location.

(The Center Square) – President Donald Trump has announced plans to visit the Chicago area for the Presidents Cup golf tournament scheduled from September 22-27 at Medinah Country Club. Trump said it was his honor to accept PGA Tour Commissioner Brian Rolapp’s invitation to be the honorary chairman of the Presidents Cup.

(Urbana-jm) – University of Illinois police have arrested a second juvenile in connection to an armed threats call last week. UIPD officers took the second suspect into custody Saturday night after spotting him near Fifth and Green Streets. Officers detained the teenager because he matched the description of the suspect. Despite commands to keep his hands visible, the juvenile repeatedly reached into his pockets. During a subsequent search, officers discovered a loaded, unserialized handgun tucked into his waistband. The juvenile was charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of an unserialized firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm without a FOID card.

Experience C-U’s Robert White. The mural was created by Chicago Artist  Dwight White the second, and pays tribute to the service, courage, excellence, and sacrifice of the Tuskegee Airmen while recognizing Rantoul’s meaningful place in their story through the former Chanute Field.

(Gibson City-jm) – Gibson City leaders are looking at ways to address flooding in their community. They want to create two properties in town to increase the outflow of water. The project would involve a dry basin to capture 40 percent of the water from the northeast part of the city. That would cost about a million dollars. They are also planning a new $32 million sewer plant to actively pump water out of the system. The city’s next steps are to raise enough money for the projects. They are already sitting at half a million dollars for the dry basin project.

(Livingston County-jm) – Two people have been arrested in Livingston County after police say a traffic stop revealed four children, two adults and two dogs enclosed in the back of a U-Haul truck. It happened last week on I-55 at Pontiac. The driver told police they were moving from Louisiana to Michigan. Roy Hamel the second and Sabrina McKinney were charged with six counts each of endangering the life or health of a child. The children were taken to the hospital to be examined for heat related injuries.

(Champaign–jc)  –Parkland College will host the 2026 Illinois Regional College Fair  for area high school students and their families to explore a wide range of higher learning opportunities on Monday, September 14. The event introduces high school and community college-transfer students to representatives and displays from more than 60 national educational institutions. Participants will learn more about educational planning and speak to college and university representatives.

 This event is free and open to the public.

(The Center Square) – Trump administration officials say they have ordered the emergency removal of 110 commercial driver’s license schools associated with more than 5,000 drivers who failed English language proficiency tests. They have also shut down 150 additional schools that claim to be certified but have unlicensed instructors and don't have adequate space to allow drivers to get behind the wheel and drive. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin spoke in Detroit on Monday, joined by other federal officials and U.S. attorneys from several Midwest districts. “A lot of the licenses unlawfully issued come from California, New York, and a lot from Illinois,Duffy said. Duffy also said many of the violations happen in the Midwest. The Illinois Secretary of State’s office did not immediately respond to The Center Square’s request for comment.

The 78th Annual Central State’s Thresherman’s Reunion in Pontiac will take place September 3rd through the 7th.

The 82nd Annual National Sweetcorn Festival will take place September 3rd-7th at McFerren Park in Hoopeston. 

Middlefork Forest Preserve in Penfield will host their 3rd annual Cardboard Boat regatta on Saturday, September 5th registration and inspections begin at 2:30 pm with races beginning at 3:30 pm.

Dennis Stroughmatt and Band will perform at the Melvin Community Hall on Saturday, September 5th at 7pm. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Cost is $10 for adults, kids under 12 are free.

The Harvest Moon Drive In Theatre in Gibson City will hold their 15th annual Frightfest weekend number One– September 10th through the 12th.
