(Undated-jm) – Severe weather hit parts of central Illinois for the fourth day in a row. Bloomington Normal was the hardest hit with trees and powerlines down throughout the city. OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington lost part of its room while Carle BroMenn Medical Center lost power. Both facilities had to go on by pass. Rivian automotive reported damage as did Illinois State University. More severe weather is in the forecast for today.

(Springfield-jm) — The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will host a series of events around the state to collect household hazardous waste. The events will provide people the opportunity to safely dispose of unused or leftover hazardous products commonly found in homes at no cost. Local collection sites include August 22nd at the Interstate Center on the McLean County Fairgrounds in Bloomington and September 26th in the southwest lot of the State Farm Center in Champaign. Accepted items include chemical cleaners, oil based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, weed killers, pesticides and other similar hazardous household products. Items not accepted include latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, agriculture chemicals and business waste.

(Champaign-jm) – The University of Illinois Springfield will partner with Parkland College as part of a program to help low income students transfer to four year universities. According to the U of I system the Transfer Drive program will have each of its three universities partner with an Illinois community college to provide students with support and financial assistance. The fall application deadline is Friday, October 2nd and the deadline for spring 2027 is Friday, February 12th. The program will begin accepting students this fall.

(Springfield–jc)  – According to a monthly briefing from the Illinois Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, state revenue increased 4 point 1 percent in July over the same month in 2025. The gains were driven by a 65 percent increase in corporate income tax collections and a near 13 percent increase in sales tax revenue.

(Chicago–jc)  U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-IL, and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson joined American Airlines officials at O’Hare International Airport on Thursday to mark the reopening of Gates K1 and L2A. The approximately $300 million project to upgrade American’s Chicago hub is supported by $90 million in federal grants through the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, previously-allocated federal funding, and airline rates and charges.

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Retail Merchants Association is gearing up to host the first ever Illinois Best Bagger Competition. Contestants from grocery stores across the state will compete for the title of Illinois’ Best Bagger and the chance to represent Illinois at the National Best Bagger Competition in Las Vegas. Competitors will be judged by how fast they can bag commonly purchased grocery items, proper bag building technique, weight distribution, as well as style, attitude and professional demeanor. The competition will be at 10 am on Monday at the Grand Central Stage.

(Undated–jc) The National Weather Service has issued a release on weather from earlier this week.  The service says this morning that least six tornadoes swept through Illinois on Tuesday. The National Weather Service said an EF-1 tornado was on the ground for 24 miles in Piatt and Champaign counties, with an estimated peak wind speed of 100 miles per hour. An EF-2 tornado was reported from Monee, Illinois to St. John, Indiana. Twisters also ravaged areas from Mokena to Tinley Park, from Orland Park to Munster, IN, Wilmington, IL and Oswego.

Straight line winds of 70 to 100 miles per hour resulted in widespread damage across Chicago’s south and southwest suburbs into northwestern Indiana.

(Champaign–jc)  –Champaign Police are investigating a shooting in the 11 Hundred  block of North Third Street that tragically resulted in the death of a child. Officers were dispatched to a residence after receiving a 9-1-1 call. When officers arrived on the scene, they attended to a child injured by a gunshot. The child was taken to a local hospital where the child died. Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer identified the child as a four year old and said an autopsy will be scheduled. The initial investigation is underway, with detectives working to determine the facts of the incident.  Champaign Police ask that anyone who has additional information please call 217-351-4545. (Springfield–jc)  Illinois and 46 state financial agencies have reached a $15.5 million settlement with one of the nation’s largest mortgage servicers for improperly imposing insurance costs on borrowers who already had active homeowners insurance policies. Pennsylvania-based NewRez LLC agreed to remediate more than $4.5 million to more than 4,200 impacted borrowers nationwide. The company will pay an additional sum of nearly $11 million for costs and penalties.

(Paxton-jm) – A Paxton woman is facing meth charges after an incident in town. Our partners at the Ford County Chronicle report 41 year old Brittany Blakeman was arrested Tuesday for violating an order of protection after she allegedly drove by a home in the 600 block of East Center Street multiple times and yelled at the occupants, one of which had an order of protection against her. Blakeman was spotted in the 100 block of North Market Street where she was arrested and found to be in possession of zero point 42 grams of meth. She was charged with possession of meth and violation of an order of protection.

A statement from D-C-F-S says the tent will offer a children’s area with games and activities, opportunities to connect with recruiters about jobs in the department, and information about foster care, adoption and guardianship. D-C-F-S will also welcome hundreds of foster, adoptive and guardianship families to the fair discounted parking, admission, concession and carnival ride coupons.  The Illinois State Fair opens Thursday and runs through Aug. 23 in Springfield.

(The Center Square) – A group of medical professionals, a nursing home and a Catholic bishop from Illinois are suing two state department heads in an attempt to block a law set to take effect next month they say forces doctors to promote assisted suicide to terminally ill patients. The law set to take effect in September, known as the End-of-Life Options Act, gives terminally ill patients with less than six months to live the choice to end their life medically, but only after they meet multiple requirements and pass medical evaluations. The plaintiffs and the Thomas More Society, a nonprofit law firm, are challenging the law on religious grounds in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Illinois, according to the filing. They contend that the law forces faith-based hospitals in the state to take part in administering the option, even if it goes against their beliefs and medical understanding.

(Undated-jm) — Severe weather ripped through Illinois Tuesday. In the Chicagoland area storms brought winds gusting over 100 mph. Here in east central Illinois, thunderstorms brought hail to the size of quarters in Roberts and pea size in Paxton. A possible tornado was reported near Lodge in Piatt County and Seymour in Champaign County. More severe weather is in the forecast for today and tomorrow across east central Illinois.

(Champaign–jc)  The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a multi-family apartment building in the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive just before 8 last night.  Fire crews quickly extinguished this fire.   Once on the scene, firefighters reported moderate smoke coming from a first-floor unit and roof.  Multiple hose lines were extended to fight this fire that originated in a first-floor kitchen. The cause of this fire is not determined as investigators remain on scene conducting their investigation. No injuries were reported

(McLean County-jm) – A McLean County Sheriff’s Office employee is behind bars on charges of possessing child sex abuse materials. Trent Arbuckle was booked at the Champaign County Jail for possessing child pornography. Arbuckle is a control room supervisor for the McLean County Jail and former correctional officer. He’s charged with two counts of possessing child pornography depicting a victim under the age of 13.

(The Center Square) – Gov. J.B. Pritzker says local taxing bodies should stop raising property taxes, because the state is putting more money into education.

The governor discussed rising education spending and rising property taxes when he spoke at the Illinois Agricultural Legislative Roundtable this week. This June, the governor said his administration increased spending on K-through-12 education by almost 3 billion dollars. The current Illinois budget is just under 56 Billion dollars, up from 38 Billion dollars in 20-19 Republican gubernatorial nominee Darren Bailey says Illinois has a spending problem and property taxes are out of control. Iowa and Indians both have capped property taxes at one percent Independent gubernatorial candidate Collin Corbett said sky-high property taxes are crushing Illinoisans and must be lowered.

(The Center Square) – An Illinois lawmaker has proposed bills that would repeal the state’s social media platform fee and targeted advertising services act.

93rd District State Representative  Travis Weaver, Republican from Peoria, filed House Bills 5806 and 5807. The tax and fee measures were part of the state revenue package signed by Governor  J.B. Pritzker in June.

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Realtors Association has officially launched a program to help local governments accelerate development of new housing. The Illinois housing supply accelerator program will allow realtors to work directly with mayors, county leaders, planners and housing stakeholders to remove barriers that delay home construction. 

(Springfield-jm) – A new law will expand access to suicide prevention services in Illinois. Lawmakers and advocates want people to know where they can turn during a crisis. The law requires 988 information to be visible in county shelter care homes, daycares, public libraries, hospitals, universities and nursing homes.  It also expands mental health education for students in grades 6 through 12.

(Springfield–jc)  –The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says applications are now being accepted for the 2026 upland game hunting permit lottery and the controlled pheasant hunting program. The free upland game hunting permit program offers lottery-assigned, no-cost hunting opportunities for wild upland game, including bobwhite quail, ring-necked pheasants and cottontail rabbits.

The controlled pheasant hunting program is a fee-based program that offers opportunities to hunt pen-reared ring-necked pheasants released at participating state sites.

(The Center Square) – Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed three bills he says will keep Illinois children from falling through the cracks in systems that are meant to support them.

Senate Bill 3196 requires the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services to consult with the Statewide Youth Advisory Board to develop transition planning rules for youth aging out of foster care.

Senate Bill 3510 strengthens child abuse investigation protocols and expands data sharing amongst law enforcement and medical professionals.

House Bill 4534 reinforces professional boundaries between educators and students, increases transparency regarding school misconduct policies and defines grooming as a form of abuse.  All three bills take effect Jan. 1

The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted an area along and north of I-74 as an enhanced or level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather today. Leading the risk is the potential for damaging winds over 70 mph. Timing of the storms looks to be about mid day.

(Undated-jm) – Gas prices fell for the first time following four consecutive weeks of increases. In its weekly report released Monday, GasBuddy says the average price for a gallon of gas in Illinois fell by 11 cents to $4.21 a gallon. The national average is $3.94, while diesel fell to $5.28. GasBuddy’s Patrick DeHaan warns it could be temporary as the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East continue to wreak havoc on global oil prices.

(Paxton-jm) – In updating our story from yesterday, fire officials believe an electrical issue caused a house fire in Paxton Sunday afternoon. The fire happened in the 400 block of East Orleans Street around 3:15pm. About 50 firefighters from Paxton, Buckley, Loda, Elliott, Gibson City, Ludlow, Rantoul and Gifford responded to the call. The basement and first floors of the over 100 year old home were damaged but fire officials say the home is rebuildable. No injuries were reported.

(The Center Square) – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Monday that the application period for a state record $157 million in transportation enhancement program funding is now open. Eligible projects include biking and walking paths, trails, streetscape beautification work and other improvements. An IDOT statement said at least 25% of state funding will be used for disadvantaged and economically distressed communities. Applications must be received by Oct. 5.

(The Center Square) – Within a wave of new laws signed late last week exist some which may impact Illinoisans’ pocketbooks, including further regulations on medicare drug prices. Other laws will allow rideshare drivers to unionize and ban new ICE detention centers from being built in some parts of the state. Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced late Friday he signed more than 75 bills from the Illinois General Assembly’s spring legislative session into law.

(Milford-jm) – A Milford man has been found guilty of first degree murder in connection to a deadly house fire. An Iroquois County jury found 53 year old Christopher Burton guilty for setting fire to a house that claimed the life of 37 year old Ashley Tucker. Firefighters were called to a house fire at Tucker's house on October 16, 2025. When they arrived they found Tucker outside the home with severe injuries. She died 3 days later. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.

(Springfield-jm) – Federal health officials say a drug resistant fungal infection is spreading in healthcare settings and Illinois is among the hardest hit states. The CDC says more than 3,000 Candida Aurus infections in the country with 380 reported in Illinois, the third highest in the country. The fungus can spread quickly in hospitals and nursing homes especially among patients using breathing tubes or catheters and is often resistant to common anti-fungal drugs. Tiredness, fever, low blood pressure and high heart rate are all symptoms.

(Forrest-jm) - A Chatsworth man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a van from a church in Forrest. Shane Ziegenhorn was arrested in Pontiac after the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle that was reported stolen from the Apostolic Church in Forrest. Ziegenhorn is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

(Hoopeston-jm) – A Hoopeson man is facing a serious charge following an incident over the weekend. Hoopeston Police arrested 25 year old Dontay Liddell after they were called to an establishment on West Main Street for a report of an armed individual. Liddell was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Additional charges are pending. He was taken to the Vermilion County Jail.

WalletHub compared livability factors ranging from housing costs and income growth to the education rate and hospital systems.

Idaho topped the list, followed by New Jersey and Wisconsin. Iowa ranked 11th.

Illinois finished ahead of #25 Indiana, #30 Missouri and #41 Kentucky. The Land of Lincoln ranked fifth for quality of life, 37th for affordability and 42nd for economy.

(Champaign-jm) – Champaign County Crimestoppers and the University of Illinois Police Department is asking the public’s help in identifying a man possibly connected to a criminal damage  incident. The crime happened on the evening of July 24th in the area of Armory Avenue and Second Street Police say a man entered a building and damaged electronic equipment and wiring. He’s described as a hispanic, approximately 18 to 25 years old. He was wearing a distinctive black backpack with a white pattern. Anyone with information is asked to call Champaign County Crimestoppers or University of Illinois Police. 

(The Center Square) – The Liberty Justice Center’s Tariff Equity and Refund Resource for America says nearly 20,000 tariff refunds totaling $1.6 billion are stuck due to either a lack of or incorrect banking information filed. LJC chairman Sara Albrecht recently told The Center Square some of the tariff refunds might be stuck in limbo if the companies that initially paid them haven’t filed or have made an error in entering their banking information. She said companies who haven’t seen movement on their refund should discuss it with their importer of record. The LJC also detailed that nearly $100 billion is making its way back to companies that paid the tariffs, which were ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, from Customs and Border Control via the U.S. Treasury.

(Elliott-jm) – One person was killed in a car versus school bus accident Saturday morning near Elliott. Ford County Coroner Brandon Roderick identified the driver of the car as 38 year old Tanya Collier of Romeoville. Illinois State Police say the accident happened on Route 9 at 1000 East Road just after 8:30 am. They say Collier failed to yield at the intersection and entered onto Route 9 in front of the Hoopeston School District bus carrying middle school softball players. All 20 of the players were taken to the hospital as a precaution. Three other occupants of Collier’s car were taken to the hospital.

(Effingham County-jm) – A 20-year-old woman from Champaign County died after her vehicle struck a guardrail just south of Effingham Friday morning. In a release, Illinois State Police said its Troop 9 responded to I-57 southbound in Effingham County at approximately 4:18 a.m. for the report of a single-vehicle fatal crash. Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes said the crash took place approximately three miles south of Effingham. She said 20-year-old Alyashailyassa Muhammad of Dewey was traveling southbound on I-57 and lost control of her vehicle on the wet roadway and struck the guardrail. Rhodes said there was “very heavy” rainfall in the area just before the crash took place. Muhammad was pronounced dead on the scene. Rhodes said family members were contacted and advised she was heading to Atlanta, Georgia.

Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity announced Regional Site Readiness Program awards totaling $35 million to support site readiness activities at 22 sites across Illinois. The taxpayer investment is part of the state’s record-high 

$500 million site readiness initiative in fiscal year 2026, aimed at making more sites across Illinois ready for business.

(Paxton-jm) – Firefighters from half a dozen fire departments responded to a house fire in Paxton Sunday afternoon. It happened in the 400 block of East Orleans Street around 3:15pm. Firefighters from Buckley, Loda, Elliott, Gibson City, Ludlow and Rantoul assisted Paxton firefighters. No injuries were reported. Firefighters were on scene for just over 2 hours.

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois’ back-to-school shopping tax holiday began Friday and will last through August 16. Governor J.B. Pritzker announced the temporary drop in sales tax on school supplies from 6.25% to 1.25%. Clothing and shoes under $125 are also covered under the holiday. According to the National Retail Federation, parents will spend more money than ever before on school supplies. Nationwide, it is estimated that $43 billion will be spent on kids in K-12 this school year.

(Springfield–dm)-Governor Pritzker signed several new laws late last week, including legislation that requires some retailers to accept cash payments, most employers to pay employees their full rate of pay for jury duty and higher education institutions to provide more transparency regarding credit hours being taught by faculty. HB4592, is intended to ensure that consumers can pay with cash at specific types of brick-and-mortar businesses. HB4844, requires employers to pay employees their regular rate of pay while they are serving on jury duty and permits employees to receive the normal juror compensation provided in addition to their regular wages. Employers with 25 or fewer employees are exempt from this legislation.  SB3314, requires public higher education systems to collect and publish annual data showing who is teaching college credit hours.

(Springfield–jc)  –Illinois leaders and Indonesian officials have announced a memorandum of understanding focused on expanding trade, opening new markets for Illinois farmers, and strengthening cooperation across business, education, and workforce development. Illinois Soybean Association Director of Market Development Todd Main said Indonesia is one of the most important soybean markets for Illinois producers. 

(Springfield–jc)  – The Illinois State Fair has announced that Route 66 will be the honorary grand marshal of the fair’s 2026 twilight parade Thursday, in honor of the mother road’s 100th anniversary.Fair officials say classic cars will lead the parade, which is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. in Lincoln Park and enter the fairgrounds through the main gate. Route 66 was established in 1926, beginning in downtown Chicago.

(Paxton–jm) - Paxton police are continuing to investigate a robbery that took place at the Paxton Hardees Wednesday. Police responded to the report of a robbery just after 3pm. Police say a tall, thin, young black male dressed in all black clothing entered the restaurant and reached across the counter and grabbed a money bag containing an undisclosed amount of money. An employee attempted to chase down the suspect who fled in a silver four door Toyota near Franklin and Elm Streets. Anyone with information is asked to call Paxton Police.

(Milford-jm) – A Milford man is on trial in connection to a deadly house fire last year. 53 year old Christopher Burton is charged with four counts of first degree murder for his alleged role in a house fire on October 16th that claimed the life of 37 year old Ashley Tucker. Burton was arrested in February of this year and pleaded not guilty. The trial is expected to continue into next week.

(Roberts-jm) – The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved nearly $1.6 million to upgrade railroad crossings in Roberts. The funding will be used to replace outdated warning devices and improve public safety at the Weldon Street, Main Street and Green Street crossings. The project also includes removing the existing track and resurfacing the Weldon Street crossing. All work should be completed in the next 18 months.

(Urbana-jm) – The University of Illinois Police Department is warning of a recent string of e-scooter thefts. Between June 1st and August 3rd, they received three reports of e-scooter thefts at the Activities and Recreation Center on Peabody Drive.

(Champiagn–jc)  – Parkland College and Cache Energy have partnered to launch a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship program for Industrial Manufacturing Technicians, creating a talent pipeline to support advanced manufacturing and next-generation energy technologies. The  one-year apprenticeship program  combines paid on-the-job learning at Cache Energy with technical training at Parkland, including coursework in blueprint reading, industrial Cache Energy control devices, electronic systems repair, and welding. Apprentices will develop skills in equipment operation and maintenance, quality systems, technical documentation, and continuous improvement while earning progressively higher wages as they demonstrate competency.

(The Center Square) – Illinois Corn Growers Association President Mark Bunselmeyer says it is disappointing that the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry did not advance a farm bill on Thursday before the August recess.The ICGA said in a statement that Illinois farmers and the agriculture industry are left with uncertainty as the current farm bill extension is set to expire on Sept. 30.Bunselmeyer said the Association wants Congress to refine the legislation so it maintains the bipartisan support needed for passage.

(The Center Square) – Illinois Governor . J.B. Pritzker has released a letter to the chief executives of seven oil companies, asking why Illinois drivers are paying higher prices at the pump while the CEOs’ businesses report record profits.

The governor asked the CEOs to return profits to consumers, provide transparency around pricing and operations, and share information on executive compensation.

Pritzker said the companies’ record profits are a result of the war with Iran. 

(Champaign-jm) — The second teenager arrested in connection to the deadly MarketPlace Mall shooting in March has been charged as an adult. WCIA 3 reports Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz says she filed a petition to transfer the case against 16 year old Jaden Wright to adult court. He’s charged with four counts of first degree murder in the shooting death of 16 year old Jaylen Bailey outside of Dicks House of Sport. 15 year old Braylin Vellon is also charged with murder in the case. If convicted Vellon and Wright both face 20 to 60 years behind bars and because the murder was committed by firing a gun, they face an additional 20 years.

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois House investigating committee held its first hearing to discuss misconduct of State Representative Carol Ammons Thursday. A federal grand jury indicted Ammons on wire fraud and other charges. The committee is made up of three Democrats and three Republicans. Ammons did not attend the hearing.

(Rantoul–dm)-The Rantoul Township High School Board of Education will hold their regular monthly meeting Monday August 10th,  Items on the agenda include approval of the purchase of Counseling Center furniture, approval of an amended Fiscal Year 27 Administrator Contract, and authorize The Superintendent to close Student Activity accounts.  There will also be a presentation by the Village of Rantoul on Housing Incentives.  The meeting is scheduled to start at 6pm in the Rantoul Township High School Boardroom.

(The Center Square) – Gas prices have swung up and down for Illinois drivers in recent weeks, as they have across the country. A spokeswoman for AAA attributed much of the current costs to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. According to AAA data, the average price for regular unleaded in Illinois was $4.30 per gallon on Thursday, up from $3.42 one year ago. Molly Hart, a spokeswoman for AAA Auto Club Group, told The Center Square prices are a few cents lower than last week’s average price at the pump in Illinois. Hart said the factors that play into the price of fuel include geopolitical conflicts, but also weather impacts on domestic refinery production and regular seasonal price changes.

(Springfield-jm) – A new Illinois law will require employers to pay people while they serve on jury duty. The law requires businesses with more than 25 workers to pay their employees the regular pay rate during jury duty. Sponsors say this is an attempt to address the financial disincentives that exist for potential jurors to serve. Federal courts pay jurors $50 per day, but county courts provide a minimal rate. The National Federation of Independent Businesses opposed the change saying the government should pay their employees for jury duty.

(Champaign County-jm) — The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office released results from two recent speed enforcement campaigns during July. The enforcement details took place on July 22nd and 24th. During the two day campaign, deputies issued 24 speeding tickets, 6 traffic warnings and 4 tickets for other traffic offenses. The Sheriff’s Office says speed enforcement campaigns will continue in August.

(Springfield-jm) – A new state law will require high schools to include CPR training on female manikans. The American Heart Association says women are 27 percent less likely than a man to receive bystander CPR because of hesitation or misconceptions. The requirement goes into effect during the 2029-2030 school year.

(Buckley-jm) – Construction on a solar farm and battery storage facility near Buckley could begin as early as this fall. Allium Renewable Energy of Chicago is seeking a building permit from Iroquois County to construct a 50 megawatt solar farm and 10 megawatt battery storage facility. It’s expected to bring around 100 construction jobs and 5 permanent jobs.

(Springfield–jc)  A new study says Illinois has 356,635 millionaire households. Shogo AI ranked 48 states based on both the percentage and total number of millionaire households. Illinois was 13th with 7.13% in seven figures.

New Jersey led the nation with 9.76% of households classified as millionaires. Maryland was next, followed by Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Kentucky ranked 45th out of 48, with 4.69% of the population classified as millionaires. Federal Reserve data shows millions of Americans have crossed the $1 million threshold in recent years, largely through property appreciation and investment portfolios.

The Center Square) – The Liberty Justice Center has sent letters to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and attorneys general in three other states, warning that school districts’ decisions to withhold information from parents regarding students' purported gender transitions violate the U.S. Constitution and federal law.  The center said parents have a right under the First and Fourteenth Amendments to direct the education of their children. 

(Bloomington-jm) – Travelers will need to allow extra time if you’re planning to fly out of Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington. The airport is renovating its short term parking lot. The existing parking lots pavement is being ripped out and replaced. The project is expected to be completed by November. The airport says you can still park in the long term lot and use the free shuttles to get to the terminal.

(Champaign-jm) – The driver accused of hitting and killing a construction worker in Champaign has entered a not guilty plea in Champaign County court. 29 year old Quamaine Fletcher of Tennessee pleaded not guilty to a single count of reckless homicide and has requested a trial by jury. The May 27th crash took the life of 65 year old Steven Cornettt of Danville. Fletcher allegedly was driving 65 mph in the 45 mph construction zone, when he reached down to pick up his phone which had fallen, when the crash happened. He’s due back in court again August 19th.

(Mahomet-jm) — Voters in Mahomet will see a referendum on the November ballot to approve construction of a new $84 million school by issuing bonds.The school board approved the referendum, which would allow the construction of the new school without raising the tax rate. The school would be constructed on 38 acres the district already owns. If approved on November 3rd, the school would be completed and ready in the fall of 2029.

(Champaign–jc)  The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a single-family home in the 700 block of Doisy Lane around 10 pm last night.

 Once on the scene, fire crews reported the occupants were outside and found light smoke coming from the garage.  Firefighters extended multiple hose lines and were able to keep the fire contained to the garage.  The cause of this fire has not been determined and no injuries were reported.

(The Center Square) – Illinois has joined 24 other states in a third lawsuit challenging tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on more than 80 countries. The complaint filed in the U.S. The Court of International Trade contends that the tariffs exceed the administration’s legal authority and violate the Administrative Procedure Act. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said he is confident he and his colleagues will prevail after the international trade court and the U.S. Supreme Court already found the Trump tariffs to be unlawful.

(The Center Square) – Growing calls for his resignation have plagued Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch since late last week, when an investigation report into allegations of sexual harassment against former Rep. Harry Benton was released. On Tuesday morning, Gov. J.B. Pritzker said there’s more to be seen before he or anyone should call for Welch’s resignation, despite the report detailing inaction by Welch’s office three years ago after being made aware of the first harassment claim against Benton.

Pritzker noted that House leadership was ultimately up to the vote of a majority of lawmakers, and he’d leave the discussion on Welch’s role to them.

(Paxton-jm) – Paxton Police arrested three people following a traffic stop in Paxton Sunday morning. Officers stopped a car in the 800 block of East Patton around 2 am for a vehicle violation. During the stop, 27 year old Damian Wilson, a passenger in the vehicle stopped, who was known to be on parole. A search of Wilson and his belongings uncovered multiple baggies of suspected cocaine, meth, digital scales, packaging materials and a pistol.  Wilson is charged with possession of meth, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, armed violence, violation of parole and two counts each of conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice and solicitation to commit obstruction of justice.

(Springfield–jc)  Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly says his department has used troopers from across the state to combat increased road rage in the Chicago area. Kelly said ISP deployed troopers from its statewide special operations groups during the first six months of this year on saturation patrols and special details on Chicago expressways. State police are encouraging the public to learn more about avoiding road rage by visiting the ISP website.

(Springfield–jc)  – A new report says Illinois recorded the sharpest rise in residential electricity prices of any state in the latest 2026 federal snapshot, with the average jumping nearly 29 percent from May of last year to May of this year..

(The Center Square) – Two days after Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced a bid for Chicago mayor, he joined Gov. J.B. Pritzker at the signing of two insurance-related bills Tuesday morning, after he said his support wasn’t political.The bills allow the Illinois Department of Insurance to regulate and review insurance companies over proposed policy rate hikes for homeowner and auto insurance. Pritzker said the bills are not out of the ordinary and are needed to provide fairness and affordability to residents.

(Gilman-jm) – One person is dead following a workplace accident in Gilman. It happened at Incobrasa on the city’s west side Monday. Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum identified the individual as 53 year old Adrian Munoz. Cheatum says Munoz was helping load railcars when he fell from the top of a car. An autopsy is scheduled for today in McLean County.

(Champaign County-jm) – Champaign County Crimestoppers are asking for the publics help on a woman passing counterfeit bills. They say on July 20th, a woman and two children entered Champaign’s Walmart on Prospect Avenue, collected multiple items throughout the store and then went to the registers to pay. The employee scanned just under $500 worth of merchandise. The woman attempted to pay with counterfeit $100 bills. When the employee went to verify with a supervisor that the bills were counterfeit, the woman and children fled. The woman was described as black, approximately 30-40 years old with tattoos.

(The Center Square) – A law in Illinois creating restrictions on social media use and online activity for children was recently signed, though it won’t take effect until 2028. One industry-backed trade group continues to call it unconstitutional.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the new public act Friday, and described it as a new way to protect minors from addictive algorithmic features of social media and to prevent exposure to harmful content.

(Ludlow-jm) – A Ludlow man has been arrested in connection to a motorcycle accident last week near the community. 50 year old Jacob Walden of Ludlow was arrested after he hit a motorcycle on Route 45 at County Road 3500 then fled. Walden was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, driving with a revoked license and failure to report an accident with personal injury. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered to be detained pretrial. He’s due back in court again August 24th.

(Iroquois County-jm) – The trial against the former Iroquois County Public Health Director has been postponed. The Illinois Attorney General’s office asked the scheduled October trial date against Dee Schippert be postponed. A status hearing is scheduled for September 24th. Shippert faces a felony 33 count indictment including theft by deception involving government property, forgery and official misconduct. She’s accused of stealing over $100,000 from the health department by submitting fraudulent time sheets for work she did not perform, including overtime and backpay she didn’t earn.

(Coles County–jc)  –First-degree murder charges have been filed in connection with the death of a man whose remains were found in Lake Mattoon on June 28th .James Adams, 26, and Robin Turner, 62, were previously charged with concealment of a homicide and dismembering a human body following the death of Dalewayne Turner, 38, of Plainfield. Illinois State Police said further searches of the lake and a residence in Plainfield led to the additional charges.

(Chicago–jc) Chicago officials say there were ten arrests during Lollapalooza 2026 from July 30 through Aug. 2.According to the Office of Emergency Management & Communications, the preliminary arrest total was lower than in 2025, when there were 12 arrests. (The Center Square) – According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Illinois is 30 cents higher than it was one month ago and 90 cents higher than it was one year ago.  AAA listed the average Illinois price at 4 dollars 34 cents per gallon on Monday.  The national average on Monday was 4 dollars 10 cents. All states around Illinois are in the upper 3 dollars per gallon. Closer to home, the average price for a gallon of gas in Champaign is 4 dollars 18 cents,  4 dollars 30 cents on average in Paxton and 4 dollars 39 cents on average in Rantoul. In Danville the average price is 3 dollars 89 cents per gallon and in Iroquois County its 4 dollars  21 cents.

(Springfield-jm) – A report from Illinois’ Legislative Inspector General says former State Representative Harry Benton violated state law by engaging in acts of sexual harassment. The findings are detailed in a summary report dated June 30th and sent to House Speaker Emanual “Chris” Welch. The investigation into allegations against Benton began after the Legislative Inspector General’s Office received a complaint on March 4th. The report found two allegations of sexual harassment were supported by the investigation. Benton resigned in early July. The report dismissed several other allegations as unfounded.

(Springfield-jm) – Governor J-B Pritzker signed a bill into law Friday to require private insurance companies to cover seizure detection devices. There are currently multiple FDA approved devices to alert people to oncoming or ongoing seizures. Sponsors say these tools can cost anywhere from $250 and $2000. The law requires insurance companies to cover the medically necessary devices with a maximum cost sharing amount of $50 per year.

(Paxton-jm) – A Paxton ice cream establishment has changed names. The Paxton Dairy Queen has been rebranded to Dairy Dream. The owners sold the naming rights back to Dairy Queen after corporate wanted a significant investment to upgrade the business along Route 45. Last week, the Cissna Park Dairy Queen also announced they will be rebranding later this month.

(Hoopeston-jm) – Two people have been arrested after allegedly stealing 60 pairs of shoes from a Hoopeston non profit meant to help kids heading back to school. 45 year old Kathy Stancle and 49 year old Jeff Chandler have been arrested on theft charges. Hoopeston Police say the pair allegedly stole the shoes from the Hoopeston Multi-Agency Service Center. 40 of the 60 pairs of shoes were recovered.

(SPringfield–jc)  –Illinoisans who have defaulted on their student loan repayments will soon see increased opportunities for employment and retention at state agencies, thanks to a new law spearheaded by State Senator Paul Faraci.  

Under previous Illinois law, any state agency employee whose student loans were in default for a period of six or more months, and in an amount of $600 or more, was required to make a satisfactory loan repayment arrangement with the loan’s cosigner or guarantor. If the employee failed to establish a satisfactory repayment arrangement prior to their sixth month of employment, the agency was required to terminate the individual’s employment.

(The Center Square) – The closure of seven Save A Lot grocery stores on Chicago's South and West sides has renewed debate over whether government subsidies can effectively address food access in underserved neighborhoods, with one free-market policy expert arguing the shutdowns highlight the limits of public intervention.The stores, operated by Yellow Banana, closed after Save A Lot ended its operating agreement with the company, citing financial challenges that included a sharp decline in SNAP purchases. Chicago had invested $13.5 million to renovate six of the seven locations as part of an effort to expand grocery access in neighborhoods often described as food deserts.

(The Center Square) – The U.S. House approved legislation aimed at preventing credit card companies from using merchant category codes to identify firearm retailers, a measure supporters say protects the privacy of lawful gun owners.

HR 1181, the Protecting Privacy in Purchases Act, would prohibit payment card networks from requiring merchant category codes that distinguish firearm retailers from general merchandise or sporting goods stores. The Department of Justice would enforce the law. U.S. Representative Mary Miller, Republican from Illinois, praised the legislation, saying it would prevent financial institutions from tracking lawful firearm purchases and protect Americans' Second Amendment rights and financial privacy. John Boch, executive director of Guns Save Life, said he supports the bill but doubts it will ever become law.

(Springfield-jm) – A new Illinois law will require schools to include railroad safety information in student handbooks. Sponsors say people have been concerned about schools near railroads and ensuring students know the protocols in place to keep them safe. Schools could opt out of the requirement if their school boards find railroad safety is covered in their curriculum.

(Springfield–jc)  –Electric utility Ameren, which covers southern and central Illinois, wants to raise prices for ratepayers.  The company has made a new claim to the Citizens Utility Board to increase rates for what the company calls a reconciliation filing, totalling $65.3 million.CUB Executive Director Sarah Moskowitz challenged the company over what she said was wasteful spending, with a burden falling onto customers.

(The Center Square) – Signed into law in the spring, a program known as Families Receiving Emergency Support for Hunger, or FRESH, is set to send out one-time payments of $400 to Illinoisans who were removed from the federal SNAP program.The $70 million taxpayer-funded program is part of the state’s FY27 budget, and state officials said about 100,000 residents will receive the payout, which began distribution Saturday. The program will only distribute to households who lost SNAP benefits between May and August, when new federal work and eligibility requirements took effect.
