(The Center Square) – Governor J–B Pritzker has appointed Jim Montgomery to serve as the new director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, effective today and pending Senate approval. Montgomery previously worked as executive director of the Illinois Prisoner Review Board. He was mayor of Taylorville from 1997-2005.

(CHAMPAIGN –dm)- In order to complete work at Gies Memorial Stadium, the University of Illinois and Stark Excavating have closed all lanes of Kirby Avenue between First Street and Fourth Street. The closure began on Wednesday, August 26, and will now reopen on Friday, September 4, 2026, weather permitting.  During the closure, drivers are encouraged to seek an alternative route.

(Springfield–jc) The State Treasurer’s Office made $1.45 billion in investment earnings from the state investment portfolio during Fiscal Year 2026, Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs made the announcement  today. Treasurer Frerichs is the state’s Chief Investment and Banking Officer. He is responsible for investing state revenue in the state investment portfolio. Also in Fiscal Year 2026, the Treasurer’s Office made nearly $759 million in gross investment earnings for cities, villages, school districts, counties and other units of government.

(Rantoul–jc)   The Champaign County African American Heritage Trail and the Experience Champaign-Urbana Foundation will unveil a new mural honoring the Tuskegee Airmen today at 2pm at 707 Veterans Parkway in Rantoul. 

Community members, supporters, and media are invited to attend. The mural was created by Artist  Dwight White II, and pays tribute to the service, courage, excellence, and sacrifice of the Tuskegee Airmen while recognizing Rantoul’s meaningful place in their story through the former Chanute Field. The public is invited to attend the event this afternoon.

(The Center Square) – New research analysis has Illinois ranked eleventh nationally in federal tax burden per filer, with a 5-year average of $23,315 between fiscal years 2021 and 2025. According to J David Tax Law’s analysis of IRS statistics, the state's net federal burden per filer increased +64.1% over the five-year period, below the national average rise of +79.8%.  Missouri ranked 13th with an average net burden of $21,306. Indiana ranked 30th at $16,047, Kentucky 31st at $15,776, Wisconsin 32nd at $15,377, and Iowa 38th at $13,785. Delaware had the highest federal tax burden per filer at $33,353.

(Savoy-jm) – Construction has begun at the University of Illinois’ Willard Airport. The $1.5 million project is meant to extend the useful life of the general aviation apron. The project is expected to take 3 months.

Illinois State Police have announced the results of a joint law enforcement detail with federal and local agencies in the Peoria area. Officers arrested 16 people on Wednesday for alleged offenses, including probation violations, possession of a controlled substance, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and driving with a suspended license. ISP said a total of 19 people were brought into compliance with the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act or the Illinois Murderer and Violent Offenders Against Youth Act.

(Gibson City–jc)  Gibson City leaders are looking to re-submit a request for funding for a 500 thousand gallon elevated storage tank for the city. With the proposal, the city looks to the Illinois Environmental Association for the dollars needed for the project. The issue is expected as an agenda item for the Gibson City Water and Sewer Committee on Tuesday at 5-30pm at city hall.

Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law wants the U.S. government to investigate whether Northwestern University’s relationship with Qatar is violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. In a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche, Brandeis Center general counsel Evan Slavitt wrote that the Qatari government-controlled Qatar Foundation paid Northwestern $737 million in connection with its satellite campus in the Qatari capital, Doha, including annual operating support ranging from $25 million to $35 million, annual management fees which are used in part to support the university’s communications and journalism schools in Evanston, and a $15 million capital investment. Slavitt told The Center Square that Northwestern agreed to abide by Qatari law at its campuses in both Qatar and Evanston.

(The Center Square) - According to a new website that breaks down tariff costs by state, executive tariffs have cost Illinois an estimated $17 billion since January 2025, the fifth highest total in the country. On Wednesday, National Taxpayers Union Foundation announced the launch of tariffs dot org. Each state page on the new site features a graph with the total cost of tariffs imposed by executive order, as well as tariffs imposed by statute.

(The Center Square) — According to the latest data from the U-S Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the unemployment rate decreased in 11 of the state’s metro areas and increased in one for the year ending July 2026. The statewide unemployment rate for July 2026 was 4.6 percent down from 4.7 percent in July 2025.

(Paxton-jc)  The city of Paxton continues to look at its aging infrastructure. This process did not begin with the floods of this month. City workers have been checking for breaks, leaks and more with the wastewater and storm sewers. The city has applied for grant money to help with a 7 million dollar project on the south side of town, but the grants were denied. The city is moving again to seek state dollars. (Crescent City-jm) – Students at Crescent City grade school will be doing a walk a thon to raise money for new playground equipment. The goal is $30,000. A $10,000 donation has already been given. (Roberts–jc)  Leaders in the Ford County town of Roberts are pursuing some grant dollars to assist the village with the  demolition and removal of the buildings at 107 and109 East Green Street. Village officials say they need a minimum of 15 letters written by Roberts residents, businesses and churches detailing what a burden these dilapidated buildings are for the village and that those writing the letters support their removal. Roberts village officials say the town does not have the funds to accomplish this on their own As of this morning the village has received 17 such letters, but they are looking for more. The letters must be received at the village hall by  September 1st. During this process, the village of Roberts will conduct a public hearing. That date will be announced in early September.

(The Center Square) — Illinois House Speaker Emanual “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, has appointed state Representative Amy “Murri” Briel, D–Ottawa, to the Illinois Veterans Advisory Council. Welch made the appointment on Tuesday, just days after Briel’s former chief of staff went public with allegations that Briel acted inappropriately in office.

(The Center Square) - Early polling for the 2028 Democratic presidential primary indicates that Illinois Governor J-B Pritzker is far behind the 2024 nominee, former Vice President Kamala Harris. According to The Center Square Voters Voice Poll, Harris topped the field with 28 percent of registered Democrats and left leaning independent respondents choosing the former VP from a list of eight prominent Democratic politicians. The second choice was not sure at 15 percent. Pritzker and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear were tied for 8th at 3 percent.

(McLean County-jm) – State and federal emergency management officials are scheduled to be in McLean County Tuesday assessing damage caused by recent severe storms and flooding. Officials from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, FEMA and the U-S Small Business Administration will conduct a preliminary damage assessment in several counties in Central Illinois through Thursday. (Champaign–jc)  52nd District State Senator Paul Faraci is sharing disaster assistance for those affected by the summer storms. Taxpayers in Champaign and Vermilion counties may be eligible for waived tax penalties and interest through the Illinois Department of Revenue. Senator Faraci says residents seeking a waiver of penalties and interest for taxes should send a brief written explanation to the department of revenue regarding why they cannot file timely or pay.

(Champaign-jm) – One person was taken to the hospital with potentially life threatening injuries following a shooting in Champaign Wednesday afternoon. Police responded to the 1300 block of Carver Drive just after 2:30 for a report of a shooting with injuries. When officers arrived they discovered a gunshot victim. That person was taken to the hospital. Anyone with information is asked to call Champaign Police.

(Washington–jc) An effort from the U S D A and  Health and Human Services Department announced sweeping new efforts to strengthen school meals by connecting more American farmers with local schools, investing in school kitchen infrastructure, and giving states and school districts new tools to serve healthier, more nutrient-dense meals to America’s children. (Urbana-jm) – A man arrested in connection to a deadly shooting in Urbana earlier this year has pleaded guilty to second degree murder. In exchange for his guilty plea, 3 counts of first degree murder, and 1 count each of aggravated unlawful possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle without concealed carry license or FOID card and 1 count of aggravated discharge of a firearm were dismissed against Charles Lake. He’s accused of shooting 52 year old Benancio Crowley on January 16th.

(The Center Square) – California Attorney General Rob Bonta co-led a lawsuit Wednesday to block a new federal rule governing mail-in ballots. But a former U.S. Department of Justice lawyer who's now working at a think tank says the suit is unnecessary. Prompted by President Trump’s Executive Order No. 14399, the U.S. Postal Service rule requires states to enroll eligible mail-in voters onto USPS-managed lists and conform to new postal envelope design standards. The USPS stated it would refuse to deliver ballots for voters not on these lists or ballots sent in non-compliant envelopes.

(Gibson City–jc)  The Gibson City Restoration Committee  Queen of Hearts jackpot rose to over 5 thousand dollars after last night's drawing. (Springfield–jc)  Illinois Governor  J.B. Pritzker has signed legislation that establishes regulatory requirements for e-bikes, gas-powered bikes and other micromobility devices. Senate Bill 3484 requires riders of e-bikes and e-motos capable of traveling over 28 mph to have a driver’s license, title, registration and insurance. The bill also establishes minimum age requirements for e-bikes.

The new law takes effect Jan. 1.

(Springfield–jc)   The Illinois Department of Public Health  has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus  in Illinois this year. The confirmed case involves a resident of Piatt County. In addition, Public Health Department Officials hva identified three other probable human cases of West Nile in northern Illinois. About one in five people who contract the disease caused by a bite from an infected mosquito may develop common symptoms, including fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, or other potentially serious complications. To date 50 counties in the state have a positive mosquito batch with West Nile. They include Ford Champaign Kankakee, McLean DeWitt and Vermilion Counties

(Champaign–jc)  The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire outside a single-family home in the 2200 block of Southwood Drive Wednesday morning just after 9.  Once on  scene, fire crews reported light smoke coming from the garage.  A single hose line was deployed to fight the fire which was beginning to extend into the garage.  No one was injured and the cause remains under investigation.

(The Center Square) – Moody’s Ratings has upgraded the issuer rating for the state of Illinois from A2 to A1. The ratings service also upgraded the state’s general obligation bonds and Build Illinois sales tax bonds to A1. Moody’s cited a stronger governance framework and an established track record of conservative fiscal management for the upgrade. A statement from Governor J-B Pritzker’s office said Illinois has received 11 upgrades across the three major credit rating agencies since June 2021.

(DeWitt County-jm) – A lawsuit has been filed against DeWitt County and the County Clerk and Recorder. WCIA reports the 43 page lawsuit names four employees of the Clerk and Recorder’s Office alleging 8 counts of retaliation in violation of the Illinois Whistleblower Act, 4 against Clerk Kari Harris and the other 4 against the county administration as a whole.

(Springfield–jc)  – The Illinois Department of Corrections says it expects to save about $35.9 million in capital costs, $6.5 million in annual operating expenses and millions of additional savings in deferred maintenance projects by phasing out two work camps and two impact program facilities. The closure of Clayton Work Camp will impact 27 people in custody and 41 staff members, who will be reassigned to Western Illinois Correctional Center at a later date.

Dixon Springs and DuQuoin Impact Programs and Greene County Work Camp were temporarily closed in March of 2023.

(Springfield–jc)  Illinois Attorney General Kuame Raoul is fighting the national government’s decree on proper regulations for mail-in ballots for elections. Attorney General Raouls argues  the Postal Service’s rule risks disenfranchising voters and will prevent states from effectively administering their mail voting programs, putting voters at risk of being disenfranchised. The government’s position is to make sure only legal citizens vote in all elections.

(Springfield–jm) – A new state law will make it easier to get prescriptions filled. Pharmacies will be able to electronically transfer more prescriptions from one location to another. The law creates safeguards for pharmacies while they transition to an electronic system. It also includes exceptions for when patients can use paper prescriptions for controlled substances.

Amy Murri Briel, D-Ottawa, is the latest lawmaker subject to allegations of ethics violations and inappropriate behavior in office after a former staffer went public with allegations including drug use and sexual harassment. Laura Jackson, Briel’s former chief of staff and campaign staffer, went public Thursday through the campaign of Liz Bishop, the GOP nominee for the 76th Illinois House district, with allegations that the lawmaker acted inappropriately in office. Bishop’s campaign released a 44-minute-long video where Jackson, a self-described progressive, said Briel made sexual comments to her and other staff, used and shared drugs such as Adderall and marijuana in her taxpayer-funded office, and more.

The bill allows farm vehicles, known as “implements of husbandry” of up to 44,000 pounds on any two or more axles to operate on Illinois highways. The previous law limited these vehicles to 36,000 pounds.

(Champaign-jm) — A paperweight that looked like a grenade led to the evacuation of Temple Hoyne Buell Hall Monday. University of Illinois Police were alerted to the suspicious device around 5:30 pm after a worker found the suspicious device. An investigation uncovered the non explosive cast iron replica grenade was a paperweight inadvertently left behind by a student after class. The student told police they were using the paperweight to hold down some papers when they went outside for the remainder of the class period. UIPD determined there was no intent to cause alarm and no danger to the campus community. No charges will be filed.

(Champaign-jm) – Three vehicles were involved in a crash on I-57 at the I-74 interchange in Champaign Tuesday evening. Illinois State Police say two passenger cars and a semi were involved and injuries were reported. There’s no word on the extent of the injuries.

(Chicago–jc)  – The Chicago Fed Survey of Economic Conditions Manufacturing Activity Index decreased to  plus-20 in August from plus-32 in July. The Activity Index decreased to minus- 2 in August from a neutral value in July.

(Springfield-jm) — The Illinois Department of Public Health announced on Tuesday that two new conditions have been added to the list of medical issues that can qualify an Illinois resident for participation in the Medical Cannabis Patient Program. IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra approved the addition of polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome with chronic pain and sickle cell disease after a review by the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board and IDPH.  The two newly-added conditions bring the total list to 58.

(Springfield-jm) — Governor JB Pritzker has signed legislation that enables the Illinois state treasurer to invest in pooled investment trusts like the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust fund, which provides capital to developers and aligns with the governor’s Building Up Illinois Developments Plan.  Senate Bill 3086 allows the trusts to be set up only if voting trustees are officers or employees of a national labor federation or member union and if the issuer has assets exceeding $1 billion.

(The Center Square-jm) – According to a new report on financial red flags, Illinois has a higher debt ratio than any other state and Chicago is the most financially tenuous place in America. Reason Foundation used audited financial reports from state governments and the nation’s 100 largest cities, counties and school districts to evaluate them in eight measures of financial health. Reason Foundation Research Director Geoff Lawrence said Illinois is way upside down, with a debt ratio of 276%. “It has way more debt than assets, $80 billion in total assets versus $220 billion in debt, so if you were to try to liquidate all of the state's assets to pay off all its debts, it would be impossible,” Lawrence told The Center Square. The report also flagged Illinois for liabilities per capita and unrestricted net position.

(Hoopeston-jm) – A Vermilion County judge has sentenced a Hoopeston man to 6 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine with the intent to distribute. Christopher Mattison entered the guilty plea and received the sentence along with one year of mandatory supervised release. Mattison was stopped by Hoopeston police in January for driving with a revoked license.

(Urbana-jm) – An Urbana hospital is increasing their mental health service capabilities. OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center in Urbana is expanding their inpatient behavioral health services adding a new floor and increasing beds from 25 to 65.

(Champaign–jc)  In order to complete work at Gies Memorial Stadium, the University of Illinois and Stark Excavating will close all lanes of Kirby Avenue between First Street and Fourth Street. The closure will begin on Wednesday morning and runs through on Saturday. (Chicago-jm) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said CBP officers at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport assisted in the arrest of three individuals and seized over 1,170 pounds of the illegal stimulant Khat. A CBP statement said two of the travelers arrived at O’Hare from Senegal last Wednesday, and the other arrived from Senegal on Thursday. CBP said state prosecutors are charging the suspects after officers seized more than 1,170 pounds of khat with a street value over $140,000.

(Champaign-jm) – The University of Illinois Police Department says a suspicious device led to the evacuation of Temple Hoyne Buell around 5:30pm. An all clear was given just over an hour later. UIPD says the bomb squad determined it to be a replica grenade.

(Undated-jm) – Another week with higher gas and diesel prices at the pump. GasBuddy reports the average price of diesel is $5.58 which is 17 cents higher than last week and less than a quarter from the all time high set in 2022. The national average for gasoline rose another 3 cents to $4.05. In Illinois, the average price of gas rose 8 cents to $4.36. That’s 13 cents higher than a month ago and more than a dollar higher than one year ago. GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan says while it appears some oil shipments are getting through the Strait of Hormuz, the growing loss of Russian refinery capacity is hitting the oil markets hard.

(Paxton-jm) – Another supply distribution for flood victims will take place this evening in Paxton. The Paxton Emergency Response Service is teaming up with the Chamber of Commerce to host the distribution. Fans, contractor bags, damp rid and Moldex will be among the items distributed. The distribution will take place from 5:30 until 7 unless supplies run out first. The distribution will take place at the Paxton Emergency Response Services building located at 134 W. State Street.

Police say a man and a woman entered the Walmart on Prospect avenue just before noon August 9th and left the store without paying for merchandise valued at more than 500 dollars. (Vermilion County–jc)  Vermilion County leaders will look to replace several culverts in the county that were affected by the recent flooding in East Central Illinois. Three are in MiddleFork Township and the fourth is in Butler Township. The Vermilion County Transportation Committee will meet at 5 on Wednesday afternoon to address the damaged culvert issue. 

(Champaign-jm) – The federal court cases against State Representative Carol Ammons and her husband Champaign County Clerk Aaron Ammons has been rescheduled to November. Carol and Aaron both filed motions for continuances last week. Their trials were scheduled to begin on September 22nd. Aaron will have a pretrial hearing on Election Day at 10 am followed by Carol at 10:15 that morning. The trials are now scheduled to begin on November 17th.

(Danville-jc)  A motorcyclist was injured in Vermilion County just east of Danville Monday morning. Police say the person on the motorcycle avoided a car turning into its path just before 8am. The injured motorcyclist was taken to an area hospital. No condition report was provided

(Champaign County-jm) – A two-vehicle crash resulted in the death of an 89-year-old woman in Champaign County Friday afternoon. In a release, the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office said at approximately 2:41 p.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash in the area of 1750 County Road 2100 North in Somer Township. The preliminary investigation shows that a dump truck was traveling westbound on 2100 North and a car was traveling eastbound. For an unknown reason, the car entered the westbound lane into the direction of travel of the dump truck. The two vehicles then collided. The driver of the truck, a 48-year-old Buckley man, was treated and released for minor injuries on scene. The driver of the car, an 89-year-old woman from rural Urbana, was pronounced dead on scene.

(Springfield-jm) – Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill into law Friday allowing not-for-profit fire departments to receive state grant funding. Many nonprofit fire departments in central and southern Illinois cannot get grant funding for equipment and building upgrades since the state only provides grants to municipal departments. The new law lets the State Fire Marshal create and award grants for not-for-profit fire departments and protection districts across Illinois.

(Ford County–jc)  –  Ford County authorities have reported a three car accident along Route 9 between Paxton and Elliott Friday afternoon. The accident happened around 1-30 at the intersection of route 9 and Route 115. Multiple people were taken to the hospital but their conditions are unknown. 

(Springfield–dm)-Currently state law exempts property passed to a surviving spouse, but when that land is passed to children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, the very people we raise to carry on our tradition, that's when the tax hits and it hits hard.  If adopted, the legislation would create a $6 million true exemption to the estate tax for family farms, meaning only the value of an estate above $6 million would be subject to taxation. (Springfield-jm) — Former Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson has died in prison according to his attorney. Multiple media outlets report Grayson died after being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Grayson was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the death of Sonya Massey.

DANVILLE, IL — A new scholarship at Danville Area Community College Foundation will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Wen Hsin Lin while helping local students pursue their educational dreams. The Dr. Wen Hsin Lin Scholarship, sponsored by his wife, Yon Meei Lin, reflects the couple’s deep appreciation for education, family, and the Danville community they called home for more than 30 years.

(Champaign-jm) – One person was arrested, and police are searching for a second suspect after reports of two armed people making threats Sunday. The University of Illinois Police Department said officers responded to the 700 block of South Fifth Street in Champaign just after 12:30 a.m. Officers found a person under the age of 18 who matched the description of one of the suspects. When officers approached, the person ran. They were arrested a short time later, and police found a gun without a serial number along the path the suspect took while running. According to UIPD, officers continued searching the area but could not find the second suspect. The juvenile was arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of an unserialized firearm and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

(Champaign County-jm) – Two people were hospitalized after a multi-vehicle crash on Illinois Route 130 in Champaign County. The crash happened at 3:18 p.m. between Urbana and Philo. Officials said the crash happened at the intersection with County Road 1100 North. State Police did not provide much information about the accident including the condition of the victims.

(Rantoul–dm)-There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday August 25th at 3:30PM honoring the Mindfulness Space Therapy Center. The ribbon cutting will take place at 601 S.Century Blvd, Suite 1314 in Rantoul.

(Springfield-jm) – A new state law will help first responders and law enforcement better identify high-risk domestic violence situations before they become fatal. Sponsors hope it will improve safety for survivors both during and after an incident occurs. In Illinois, it is estimated 42% of women and 26% of men will face violence from an intimate partner at some time in their life. The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence reported a 14% increase in domestic violence-related homicides since 2024 and an increase of 140% since 2022. A new law requires police to use a lethality assessment if there are allegations of assault or battery that did not result in an arrest. Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Human Services will work with stakeholders to develop a toolkit and model policies for police departments. Police will only be allowed to administer the lethality assessment if they receive explicit consent from survivors. Officers must document when survivors decline an assessment in their police report and refer them to a domestic violence center.

(Springfield-jm) – Governor J-B Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Revenue have announced disaster relief for people and businesses who have been affected by severe weather over the past few months. The relief would be available for individuals in 15 counties including Champaign, Ford and Vermilion Counties. Any taxpayer seeking a waiver of penalties and interest for taxes is urged to send a brief written explanation to the Illinois Department of Revenue regarding why they cannot file timely or pay.

(Springfield–dm)-Last week at the opening of the Illinois State Fair, Gov. JB Pritzker was asked if the Family Farm Preservation Act would get passed in the fall veto session.  The chief executive did not commit to the November/December session but said the act is on his agenda of things to get done. 106th District State Representative Jason Bunting (R-Emington) says the governor also pledged his support for the Act during the Illinois Agriculture Legislative Roundtable in McLean County.

(Illinois–dm)-A recent study has found Illinois is not among the most expensive places in the country when comparing health care costs to income. Researchers at MediFind ranked Illinois 31st among 50 states in an analysis measuring per-capita expenditure on health care services and prescription drugs against median income.

West Virginia had the highest percentage with health care expenditures taking 16.14% of income. Utah was the least expensive at 6.81%. Illinois’ number was 11.03%.

Capitol News Illinois reports thousands attended a morning brunch with elected officials before heading to the fairgrounds for a rally. Even though there are hundreds of Republicans on the ballot in Illinois, Democrats mostly focused on a common opponent: President Donald Trump. Party leaders shared how they fought back against the Trump Administration and encouraged supporters to work together to elect Democrats up and down the ticket. (Sprignfield–jc)  – The Illinois Department of Employment Security announced that the unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in July, down -0.2 percentage point from June, based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The revised June unemployment rate was 5.1 percent.  Total nonfarm payrolls increased by 11,700 to 6,176,400, a record high.

The industry sector with the largest gain in monthly payroll jobs was private education and health services, with an increase of 6,200.

(The Center Square) – Chicago will not be welcoming the Democratic National Convention in 2028 as it did in 2024. DNC Chairman Ken Martin released a statement on Thursday saying that Boston, Denver and Philadelphia are the three cities still in contention. Along with Chicago, Atlanta was eliminated from consideration. Chicago has held the DNC six times.

(Champaign–dm)-In order to install new utilities, pavement, and sidewalks associated with Phase 2 of the Downtown Plaza Project, all lanes of Washington Street will be closed to traffic between Walnut Street and Hickory Street.  Users of the City parking lot located at the intersection of Walnut and Washington Streets are encouraged to enter and exit from Walnut Street.  Northbound traffic on Fremont Street will be accommodated.  In coordination with the closure, temporary traffic signals will be activated at the intersection of Walnut Street and Columbia Avenue. Signal activation is expected to occur on Friday, August 21, 2026.  The Washington Street road closure is set to begin on Monday, August 24, 2026.  Washington Street is expected to remain closed through the end of November 2026.

(Sprngnfield–jc)  The Illinois Department of Transportation is accepting applications for grants to provide public transportation providers and eligible nonprofit organizations with paratransit vehicles. Through its Consolidated Vehicle Procurement program, IDOT purchases accessible paratransit vehicles on behalf of eligible recipients using various federal funding sources.  The deadline to apply is September 21st.

Today the Paxton Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a  “together for our Community” event at the Paxton Coin Laundry from 8am to 3pm today and 8am to 3pm on Saturday. The local chamber will be handing out supplies, gift cards and other help.

(Paxton-jm) – The treasurer of the Paxton Buckley Loda Choral Boosters has been arrested for allegedly stealing money from the group. Tara Long was charged with theft between $10,000 and $100,000. Paxton Police say the district reported fraudulent activity from the bank account including 60 withdrawals in an almost two month span. They say Long allegedly stole $21,000 from the account.

(Urbana-jm) – The University of Illinois is among 30 universities across the country that were asked by the U-S Department of Defense to audit their research as it scrutinizes China’s influence. If universities don’t complete a review in the next two weeks and end any partnerships deemed problematic they face losing federal funding.

(Springfield–jc)  –Illinois gas prices have risen again, by an average of ten cents in the last week. Triple A listed the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded at $4.36 today, up from $4.26 one week before and $4.16 one month ago. Gas at Costco and Sam’s Club in Champaign is 4-oh-2 per gallon today. The Circle K in Rantoul has gas a 4 dollars-29 cents per gallon. Both Paxton Casey's location’s list gas at 4 dollars 29 cents per gallon The B-P in Gilman has gas at 4-15 per gallon this morning.

Danville, IL-  Vermilion County Coroner, Jane McFadden stated that a body located in the water north of Fithian in rural Vermilion County, Illinois has been identified as 20-year-old Jaquincia Comage, from Decatur, Illinois.

An autopsy was  scheduled yesterday. No other information is available for release and the Illinois State Police and the Vermilion County Coroner’s office continue to investigate.

(Gibson City–jc)  The Gibson City Restoration Committee held their Queen of Hearts drawing last night. The jackpot was 4 thousand 847 dollars Cheryl Cokeley had her ticket drawn and she chose to see what was behind card #1. It revealed the 2 of Hearts. Cheryl won $35. The drawing is held weekly and all money raised goes to building renovation projects in the city.

(Paxton-jm) – A local group is helping flood victims in Paxton. The Paxton Masonic Lodge donated $10,000 to the Paxton Area Ministerial Association to create a crisis fund. (Champaign-jm) – A 16 year old has been arrested in connection to a deadly shooting more than a year ago in Champaign that killed two teenagers.The teen was arrested by U-S Marshals in Urbana. He was wanted on an arrest warrant related to a prior robbery conviction but was also charged with first degree murder in connection to the June 2025 double homicide.

(Roberts-jm) – A crumbling building in Roberts has many people concerned for public safety. The two story building near the center of town caught fire a few years ago. Last week, the building partially collapsed. The village is looking for grant money to at least partially cover the demolition of the building.

(Chatsworth-jm) – A Sheldon man has pleaded guilty to felony LSD possession. David Frederickson accepted a negotiated plea deal in Livingston County court for possessing between 600 and 15 hundred parts of LSD. Four other counts were dismissed. Last year police arrested Fredericks following a search of a home in Sheldon and Chatsworth and found 1,209 doses of acid, 298 grams of mushrooms, 3,886 grams of THC concentrate, 184 grams of cannabis flower and prescription pills.

(The Center Square) – Illinois tollway users will be paying more next year, and a state representative warned that there could be traffic implications. The Illinois Tollway Board held its monthly meeting on Wednesday and voted unanimously in favor of a plan to raise tolls by 45 cents per toll for most passenger vehicles and 30% for commercial vehicles. The board’s power to raise tolls came from the $1.5 billion transit funding package signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker last December.

(The Center Square) – Days after Gov. J.B. Pritzker said an immediate declaration wasn’t urgent, he signed a disaster declaration spanning 15 different counties for storms between mid-May and Sunday. The declaration primarily focuses on strong storms that hit different parts of the state in recent weeks. In the announcement, the governor’s office said the declaration directs state agencies like the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Department of Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, and Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to help impacted communities. The governor says a declaration would “kick off” federal disaster aid requests

(Paxton-jm) – Drivers can expect delays on parts of I-57 in southern Ford County as construction is scheduled to begin this week. IDOT says construction on the bridges carrying I-57 over the Big Four Ditch south of Paxton will begin Friday. The initial work will include constructing crossovers for traffic at both ends of the existing bridges. That work is expected to be completed by the end of October. Then starting in the spring, both bridges will be replaced and will take most of 2027 to complete. The project is estimated to cost nearly $20 million.

The former power plant’s 3.3 million cubic yards of coal ash remain in the floodplain of the river, awaiting Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approval for removal. But the state agency has been reviewing the removal plan for over four years without action.

(Urbana-jm) — A University of Illinois grad student has been arrested for allegedly vandalizing two license plate reader cameras on campus. 26 year old Mitchell Bryant is charged with a single count of criminal damage to government supported property. A camera in the area of Green and Gregory and another at Wright and Springfield were discovered to have been covered in yellow spray paint. Bryant was allegedly caught in the act using a pole and cord from security cameras and a camera on an MTD bus.

(Paxton-jm) - Paxton city leaders approved an emergency declaration during a meeting last night. It comes after nearly a foot of rain fell on the city last week. The move could bring in state and federal disaster assistance. Members of Paxton's Emergency Response Services will be going door to door today doing damage assessment. For those not home when the assessments are being done, they will leave a piece of paper with instructions of what to do.

(Dewey-jm) – The Champaign County Coroner has identified the teen found dead after his car left the roadway Saturday. Laurie Brauer identified the victim as 17 year old Elias Smith of Rantoul. An autopsy has been scheduled. The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office says they received a 9-1-1 call from Smith stating his car had left the roadway on County Road 1000 East at approximately 2850 North and the vehicle was filling up with water. Searchers found the vehicle Sunday and then found Smith's body yesterday.

(The Center Square) – The Federal Trade Commission says it has begun sending 640,038 payments totaling more than $23.8 million to Grubhub drivers and diners harmed by the Chicago-based food delivery platform’s misleading claims and unlawful conduct. Following a settlement reached in December 2024, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said a multi-year investigation revealed that Grubhub’s deceptive business practices were negatively affecting participants in nearly every aspect of the company’s transactions.

On the night of August 2nd or the morning of August 3rd someone intentionally punctured all four tires of a Jeep located at Lake of the Woods apartments. There is no description of the suspect.

CHAMPAIGN – 52nd District State Senator Paul Faraci, Democrat from Champaign, says  the Champaign D-M-V will begin offering in-person disability parking placard services to provide relief for parents and guardians who transport individuals who are unable to drive. This directly improves the accessibility of the program for East Central Illinoisans, ensuring parking placards can be issued without administrative delay or requiring a long drive out of the region.” The new walk-in option, made possible by a pilot program through the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, allows customers to apply for or renew permanent and meter-exempt disability parking placards, reducing processing times for applications that were previously handled exclusively by mail through the Springfield Flagship office. Expanded in-person services will now be available at 14 additional facilities across Illinois, including the Champaign DMV in the district Faraci represents.

(Undated-jm) – The average price for a gallon of gas rose last week, wiping out a week’s worth of decreases. GasBuddy says the average is $4.28 a gallon up from $4.21. The national average is $4.02 up from $3.94. The average price of diesel is $5.42, up 14 cents. Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy says the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries kept pressure on the markets.

(Illinois–jc)A Florida man who previously resided in Illinois has pleaded not guilty to charges that he allegedly swindled people in a fraudulent investment scheme.

U.S. government attorneys said Makaio’ Kekoa, 39, formerly known as Lorenzo Hood, falsely informed victim investors that he had the ability to invest their money in short-term, high-yield investment opportunities.Kekoa then allegedly misappropriated the funds for his personal use. Prosecutors said Kekoa caused the victim investors to incur cumulative losses of at least $180,000.

Toby Behrends of Sheffield was named Grand Champion Overall Master Showman in the competition for 4-H members aged 14 to 18. (East Central–jc)  Residents and businesses throughout East Central Illinois continue to recover from several days of flooding over the past 5 days. Paxton was hit with flooding and high water in several areas of the city. Flooding also occurred in the village of Rantoul to Thomasboro, in Gibson City and into the Southern Iroquois County communities of Buckley Loda and Cissna Park.  Flooding occurred in Dewey, Royal to several points around Champaign and Urbana. The red bridge in Mahomet was closed due to high waters over the weekend.  A plethora of county roads, state routes were  closed for hours during the recent storms. Wet grounds also closed the Harvest Moon Twin Drive Inn Theatre in Gibson City. Hundreds of local residents continue to repair flooded areas of homes and businesses. Today’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and highs in the low 80s.

(Dewey-jm) – The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and multiple emergency responders were called to a water emergency near Dewey Saturday. It happened just before 5pm when METCAD received a 9-1-1 call from a driver stating they had left the road at County Road 1000 East at approximately 2850 North and the vehicle was filling up with water before dispatchers lost contact with the driver. On Sunday, crews recovered a submerged vehicle, however the driver was not located. The search for the driver continues.  (The Center Square) – A civil justice watchdog says a new Illinois law could reverse the state’s gains in workers’ compensation reform. House Bill 5228 to amend workers’ comp provisions took effect immediately upon being signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Aug. 7. Phil Melin, executive director of Illinois Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, pointed to two issues with the legislation. Melin said the surcharge would be $7 million in total and would increase 3.5% each year.

(Urbana–jc)  Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer has released the name of an individual who  died from injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle crash early Friday  morning along Interstate 57 near Ludlow. Brauer says 69 year old Elease Tolar,  of Chicago, Illinois, died at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana following the multi unit crash. The accident remains under investigation.

WATSEKA – 106th District State Representative Jason R. Bunting Republican from Emington  applauded the recent signing of legislation which would provide Illinois farmers with additional flexibility in transporting goods and allow larger, modern farm equipment on the state’s highways. Senate Bill 32-0h-8 passed both houses of the General Assembly unanimously this spring, with Bunting as a co-sponsor. It changes the law to allow farm vehicles up to 44,000 pounds on any two or more axles to operate on Illinois highways. The measure becomes law on January First.

(Chicago–jc)  The National Federation of Independent Business Optimism Index rose 2 point 4 points in July  to  99- point- 8, moving above its 52-year average of 98.0 and reaching its highest level since August 2025. The NFIB Uncertainty Index, however, went up 2 points and remained well above its historical average of 68. 

(DeWitt County-jm) — A portion of Route 54 north of Farmer City is set to close this week for bridge work. IDOT announced the road will be closed in Weedman so that the bridge carrying Route 54 over Salt Creek can be worked on. The closure will take place on Thursday.

(Rantoul-jm) – A new business is coming to Rantoul. The village says Wingstop has pulled permits to go in the spot where Main Scoop once occupied on the village’s west side.

(Champaign-jm) – A Champaign man is facing child pornography charges. Alexander Hernandez was charged with six felony counts of possessing child pornography dating back to 2024. He pleaded not guilty and was allowed to be released. He’s due back in court September 15th.

(Paxton-jc)  – The city of Paxton will again be the scene for a film project. Flyover Studios will use a portion of the downtown area for several days this week for scenes of the movie  "The Boy Code.” Filming is expected to be indoors at locations along the 100 block of Market Street in Paxton. Film company vehicles will be parked in the downtown area. Please be courteous and welcoming to the film crews.

(Belvidere–jc)  Stellantis has announced that the next-generation Jeep Cherokee will become the first U.S. vehicle assembled on the new S-T–L-A One platform, with the Belvidere Assembly Plant to serve as the platform’s U.S. launch site.

According to a company statement issued today, investment in Belvidere is expected to grow by $200 million to more than $800 million as preparations for production continue. Pilot production of the Belvidere-assembled next-generation Cherokee is expected to begin in the first half of 2028.

(Springfield–jc0  The Illinois Housing Development Authority has published its 2027-2028 Qualified Allocation Plan, which establishes the rules and criteria governing Illinois’ Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program. The Housing Authority says the low housing tax program  has been utilized to finance 147 developments over the last five years, resulting in the creation or preservation of 7,541 affordable housing units.

(Undated-jm) – Severe weather hit parts of central Illinois for the fourth day in a row. Bloomington Normal was the hardest hit with trees and powerlines down throughout the city. OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington lost part of its room while Carle BroMenn Medical Center lost power. Both facilities had to go on by pass. Rivian automotive reported damage as did Illinois State University. More severe weather is in the forecast for today.

(Springfield-jm) — The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will host a series of events around the state to collect household hazardous waste. The events will provide people the opportunity to safely dispose of unused or leftover hazardous products commonly found in homes at no cost. Local collection sites include August 22nd at the Interstate Center on the McLean County Fairgrounds in Bloomington and September 26th in the southwest lot of the State Farm Center in Champaign. Accepted items include chemical cleaners, oil based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, weed killers, pesticides and other similar hazardous household products. Items not accepted include latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, agriculture chemicals and business waste.

(Champaign-jm) – The University of Illinois Springfield will partner with Parkland College as part of a program to help low income students transfer to four year universities. According to the U of I system the Transfer Drive program will have each of its three universities partner with an Illinois community college to provide students with support and financial assistance. The fall application deadline is Friday, October 2nd and the deadline for spring 2027 is Friday, February 12th. The program will begin accepting students this fall.

(Springfield–jc)  – According to a monthly briefing from the Illinois Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, state revenue increased 4 point 1 percent in July over the same month in 2025. The gains were driven by a 65 percent increase in corporate income tax collections and a near 13 percent increase in sales tax revenue.

(Chicago–jc)  U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-IL, and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson joined American Airlines officials at O’Hare International Airport on Thursday to mark the reopening of Gates K1 and L2A. The approximately $300 million project to upgrade American’s Chicago hub is supported by $90 million in federal grants through the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, previously-allocated federal funding, and airline rates and charges.

Contestants from grocery stores across the state will compete for the title of Illinois’ Best Bagger and the chance to represent Illinois at the National Best Bagger Competition in Las Vegas. Competitors will be judged by how fast they can bag commonly purchased grocery items, proper bag building technique, weight distribution, as well as style, attitude and professional demeanor. (Undated–jc) The National Weather Service has issued a release on weather from earlier this week.  The service says this morning that least six tornadoes swept through Illinois on Tuesday. The National Weather Service said an EF-1 tornado was on the ground for 24 miles in Piatt and Champaign counties, with an estimated peak wind speed of 100 miles per hour. An EF-2 tornado was reported from Monee, Illinois to St. John, Indiana. Twisters also ravaged areas from Mokena to Tinley Park, from Orland Park to Munster, IN, Wilmington, IL and Oswego.

Straight line winds of 70 to 100 miles per hour resulted in widespread damage across Chicago’s south and southwest suburbs into northwestern Indiana.

(Champaign–jc)  –Champaign Police are investigating a shooting in the 11 Hundred  block of North Third Street that tragically resulted in the death of a child. Officers were dispatched to a residence after receiving a 9-1-1 call. When officers arrived on the scene, they attended to a child injured by a gunshot. The child was taken to a local hospital where the child died. Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer identified the child as a four year old and said an autopsy will be scheduled. The initial investigation is underway, with detectives working to determine the facts of the incident.  Champaign Police ask that anyone who has additional information please call 217-351-4545. (Springfield–jc)  Illinois and 46 state financial agencies have reached a $15.5 million settlement with one of the nation’s largest mortgage servicers for improperly imposing insurance costs on borrowers who already had active homeowners insurance policies. Pennsylvania-based NewRez LLC agreed to remediate more than $4.5 million to more than 4,200 impacted borrowers nationwide. The company will pay an additional sum of nearly $11 million for costs and penalties.

(Paxton-jm) – A Paxton woman is facing meth charges after an incident in town. Our partners at the Ford County Chronicle report 41 year old Brittany Blakeman was arrested Tuesday for violating an order of protection after she allegedly drove by a home in the 600 block of East Center Street multiple times and yelled at the occupants, one of which had an order of protection against her. Blakeman was spotted in the 100 block of North Market Street where she was arrested and found to be in possession of zero point 42 grams of meth. She was charged with possession of meth and violation of an order of protection.

(Springfield–jc)  –The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services tent at the Illinois State Fair will be on Central Avenue, where visitors can learn about the department’s programs and explore career opportunities. A statement from D-C-F-S says the tent will offer a children’s area with games and activities, opportunities to connect with recruiters about jobs in the department, and information about foster care, adoption and guardianship. D-C-F-S will also welcome hundreds of foster, adoptive and guardianship families to the fair discounted parking, admission, concession and carnival ride coupons.  The Illinois State Fair opens Thursday and runs through Aug. 23 in Springfield.

(The Center Square) – A group of medical professionals, a nursing home and a Catholic bishop from Illinois are suing two state department heads in an attempt to block a law set to take effect next month they say forces doctors to promote assisted suicide to terminally ill patients. The law set to take effect in September, known as the End-of-Life Options Act, gives terminally ill patients with less than six months to live the choice to end their life medically, but only after they meet multiple requirements and pass medical evaluations. The plaintiffs and the Thomas More Society, a nonprofit law firm, are challenging the law on religious grounds in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Illinois, according to the filing. They contend that the law forces faith-based hospitals in the state to take part in administering the option, even if it goes against their beliefs and medical understanding.

(Undated-jm) — Severe weather ripped through Illinois Tuesday. In the Chicagoland area storms brought winds gusting over 100 mph. Here in east central Illinois, thunderstorms brought hail to the size of quarters in Roberts and pea size in Paxton. A possible tornado was reported near Lodge in Piatt County and Seymour in Champaign County. More severe weather is in the forecast for today and tomorrow across east central Illinois.

(Champaign–jc)  The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a multi-family apartment building in the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive just before 8 last night.  Fire crews quickly extinguished this fire.   Once on the scene, firefighters reported moderate smoke coming from a first-floor unit and roof.  Multiple hose lines were extended to fight this fire that originated in a first-floor kitchen. The cause of this fire is not determined as investigators remain on scene conducting their investigation. No injuries were reported

(McLean County-jm) – A McLean County Sheriff’s Office employee is behind bars on charges of possessing child sex abuse materials. Trent Arbuckle was booked at the Champaign County Jail for possessing child pornography. Arbuckle is a control room supervisor for the McLean County Jail and former correctional officer. He’s charged with two counts of possessing child pornography depicting a victim under the age of 13.

(The Center Square) – Gov. J.B. Pritzker says local taxing bodies should stop raising property taxes, because the state is putting more money into education.

The governor discussed rising education spending and rising property taxes when he spoke at the Illinois Agricultural Legislative Roundtable this week. This June, the governor said his administration increased spending on K-through-12 education by almost 3 billion dollars. The current Illinois budget is just under 56 Billion dollars, up from 38 Billion dollars in 20-19 Republican gubernatorial nominee Darren Bailey says Illinois has a spending problem and property taxes are out of control. Iowa and Indians both have capped property taxes at one percent Independent gubernatorial candidate Collin Corbett said sky-high property taxes are crushing Illinoisans and must be lowered.

(The Center Square) – An Illinois lawmaker has proposed bills that would repeal the state’s social media platform fee and targeted advertising services act.

93rd District State Representative  Travis Weaver, Republican from Peoria, filed House Bills 5806 and 5807. The tax and fee measures were part of the state revenue package signed by Governor  J.B. Pritzker in June.

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Realtors Association has officially launched a program to help local governments accelerate development of new housing. The Illinois housing supply accelerator program will allow realtors to work directly with mayors, county leaders, planners and housing stakeholders to remove barriers that delay home construction. 

(Springfield-jm) – A new law will expand access to suicide prevention services in Illinois. Lawmakers and advocates want people to know where they can turn during a crisis. The law requires 988 information to be visible in county shelter care homes, daycares, public libraries, hospitals, universities and nursing homes.  It also expands mental health education for students in grades 6 through 12.

(Springfield–jc)  –The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says applications are now being accepted for the 2026 upland game hunting permit lottery and the controlled pheasant hunting program. The free upland game hunting permit program offers lottery-assigned, no-cost hunting opportunities for wild upland game, including bobwhite quail, ring-necked pheasants and cottontail rabbits.

The controlled pheasant hunting program is a fee-based program that offers opportunities to hunt pen-reared ring-necked pheasants released at participating state sites.

(The Center Square) – Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed three bills he says will keep Illinois children from falling through the cracks in systems that are meant to support them.

Senate Bill 3196 requires the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services to consult with the Statewide Youth Advisory Board to develop transition planning rules for youth aging out of foster care.

Senate Bill 3510 strengthens child abuse investigation protocols and expands data sharing amongst law enforcement and medical professionals.

House Bill 4534 reinforces professional boundaries between educators and students, increases transparency regarding school misconduct policies and defines grooming as a form of abuse.  All three bills take effect Jan. 1

The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted an area along and north of I-74 as an enhanced or level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather today. Leading the risk is the potential for damaging winds over 70 mph. Timing of the storms looks to be about mid day.

(Undated-jm) – Gas prices fell for the first time following four consecutive weeks of increases. In its weekly report released Monday, GasBuddy says the average price for a gallon of gas in Illinois fell by 11 cents to $4.21 a gallon. The national average is $3.94, while diesel fell to $5.28. GasBuddy’s Patrick DeHaan warns it could be temporary as the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East continue to wreak havoc on global oil prices.

(Paxton-jm) – In updating our story from yesterday, fire officials believe an electrical issue caused a house fire in Paxton Sunday afternoon. The fire happened in the 400 block of East Orleans Street around 3:15pm. About 50 firefighters from Paxton, Buckley, Loda, Elliott, Gibson City, Ludlow, Rantoul and Gifford responded to the call. The basement and first floors of the over 100 year old home were damaged but fire officials say the home is rebuildable. No injuries were reported.

(The Center Square) – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Monday that the application period for a state record $157 million in transportation enhancement program funding is now open. Eligible projects include biking and walking paths, trails, streetscape beautification work and other improvements. An IDOT statement said at least 25% of state funding will be used for disadvantaged and economically distressed communities. Applications must be received by Oct. 5.

(The Center Square) – Within a wave of new laws signed late last week exist some which may impact Illinoisans’ pocketbooks, including further regulations on medicare drug prices. Other laws will allow rideshare drivers to unionize and ban new ICE detention centers from being built in some parts of the state. Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced late Friday he signed more than 75 bills from the Illinois General Assembly’s spring legislative session into law.

(Milford-jm) – A Milford man has been found guilty of first degree murder in connection to a deadly house fire. An Iroquois County jury found 53 year old Christopher Burton guilty for setting fire to a house that claimed the life of 37 year old Ashley Tucker. Firefighters were called to a house fire at Tucker's house on October 16, 2025. When they arrived they found Tucker outside the home with severe injuries. She died 3 days later. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.

(Springfield-jm) – Federal health officials say a drug resistant fungal infection is spreading in healthcare settings and Illinois is among the hardest hit states. The CDC says more than 3,000 Candida Aurus infections in the country with 380 reported in Illinois, the third highest in the country. The fungus can spread quickly in hospitals and nursing homes especially among patients using breathing tubes or catheters and is often resistant to common anti-fungal drugs. Tiredness, fever, low blood pressure and high heart rate are all symptoms.

(Forrest-jm) - A Chatsworth man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a van from a church in Forrest. Shane Ziegenhorn was arrested in Pontiac after the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle that was reported stolen from the Apostolic Church in Forrest. Ziegenhorn is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

(Hoopeston-jm) – A Hoopeson man is facing a serious charge following an incident over the weekend. Hoopeston Police arrested 25 year old Dontay Liddell after they were called to an establishment on West Main Street for a report of an armed individual. Liddell was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Additional charges are pending. He was taken to the Vermilion County Jail.

(Champaign-jm) – Champaign County Crimestoppers and the University of Illinois Police Department is asking the public’s help in identifying a man possibly connected to a criminal damage  incident. The crime happened on the evening of July 24th in the area of Armory Avenue and Second Street Police say a man entered a building and damaged electronic equipment and wiring. He’s described as a hispanic, approximately 18 to 25 years old. He was wearing a distinctive black backpack with a white pattern. Anyone with information is asked to call Champaign County Crimestoppers or University of Illinois Police. 

(The Center Square) – The Liberty Justice Center’s Tariff Equity and Refund Resource for America says nearly 20,000 tariff refunds totaling $1.6 billion are stuck due to either a lack of or incorrect banking information filed. LJC chairman Sara Albrecht recently told The Center Square some of the tariff refunds might be stuck in limbo if the companies that initially paid them haven’t filed or have made an error in entering their banking information. She said companies who haven’t seen movement on their refund should discuss it with their importer of record. The LJC also detailed that nearly $100 billion is making its way back to companies that paid the tariffs, which were ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, from Customs and Border Control via the U.S. Treasury.

(Elliott-jm) – One person was killed in a car versus school bus accident Saturday morning near Elliott. Ford County Coroner Brandon Roderick identified the driver of the car as 38 year old Tanya Collier of Romeoville. Illinois State Police say the accident happened on Route 9 at 1000 East Road just after 8:30 am. They say Collier failed to yield at the intersection and entered onto Route 9 in front of the Hoopeston School District bus carrying middle school softball players. All 20 of the players were taken to the hospital as a precaution. Three other occupants of Collier’s car were taken to the hospital.

(Effingham County-jm) – A 20-year-old woman from Champaign County died after her vehicle struck a guardrail just south of Effingham Friday morning. In a release, Illinois State Police said its Troop 9 responded to I-57 southbound in Effingham County at approximately 4:18 a.m. for the report of a single-vehicle fatal crash. Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes said the crash took place approximately three miles south of Effingham. She said 20-year-old Alyashailyassa Muhammad of Dewey was traveling southbound on I-57 and lost control of her vehicle on the wet roadway and struck the guardrail. Rhodes said there was “very heavy” rainfall in the area just before the crash took place. Muhammad was pronounced dead on the scene. Rhodes said family members were contacted and advised she was heading to Atlanta, Georgia.

Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity announced Regional Site Readiness Program awards totaling $35 million to support site readiness activities at 22 sites across Illinois. $500 million site readiness initiative in fiscal year 2026, aimed at making more sites across Illinois ready for business.

(Paxton-jm) – Firefighters from half a dozen fire departments responded to a house fire in Paxton Sunday afternoon. It happened in the 400 block of East Orleans Street around 3:15pm. (Springfield-jm) – Illinois’ back-to-school shopping tax holiday began Friday and will last through August 16. Governor J.B. Pritzker announced the temporary drop in sales tax on school supplies from 6.25% to 1.25%. Clothing and shoes under $125 are also covered under the holiday. According to the National Retail Federation, parents will spend more money than ever before on school supplies. Nationwide, it is estimated that $43 billion will be spent on kids in K-12 this school year.

(Springfield–dm)-Governor Pritzker signed several new laws late last week, including legislation that requires some retailers to accept cash payments, most employers to pay employees their full rate of pay for jury duty and higher education institutions to provide more transparency regarding credit hours being taught by faculty. HB4592, is intended to ensure that consumers can pay with cash at specific types of brick-and-mortar businesses. HB4844, requires employers to pay employees their regular rate of pay while they are serving on jury duty and permits employees to receive the normal juror compensation provided in addition to their regular wages. Employers with 25 or fewer employees are exempt from this legislation.  SB3314, requires public higher education systems to collect and publish annual data showing who is teaching college credit hours.

(Springfield–jc)  –Illinois leaders and Indonesian officials have announced a memorandum of understanding focused on expanding trade, opening new markets for Illinois farmers, and strengthening cooperation across business, education, and workforce development. Illinois Soybean Association Director of Market Development Todd Main said Indonesia is one of the most important soybean markets for Illinois producers. 

(Springfield–jc)  – The Illinois State Fair has announced that Route 66 will be the honorary grand marshal of the fair’s 2026 twilight parade Thursday, in honor of the mother road’s 100th anniversary.Fair officials say classic cars will lead the parade, which is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. in Lincoln Park and enter the fairgrounds through the main gate. Route 66 was established in 1926, beginning in downtown Chicago.

(Paxton–jm) - Paxton police are continuing to investigate a robbery that took place at the Paxton Hardees Wednesday. Police responded to the report of a robbery just after 3pm. Police say a tall, thin, young black male dressed in all black clothing entered the restaurant and reached across the counter and grabbed a money bag containing an undisclosed amount of money. An employee attempted to chase down the suspect who fled in a silver four door Toyota near Franklin and Elm Streets. Anyone with information is asked to call Paxton Police.

(Milford-jm) – A Milford man is on trial in connection to a deadly house fire last year. 53 year old Christopher Burton is charged with four counts of first degree murder for his alleged role in a house fire on October 16th that claimed the life of 37 year old Ashley Tucker. Burton was arrested in February of this year and pleaded not guilty. The trial is expected to continue into next week.

(Roberts-jm) – The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved nearly $1.6 million to upgrade railroad crossings in Roberts. The funding will be used to replace outdated warning devices and improve public safety at the Weldon Street, Main Street and Green Street crossings. The project also includes removing the existing track and resurfacing the Weldon Street crossing. All work should be completed in the next 18 months.

(Urbana-jm) – The University of Illinois Police Department is warning of a recent string of e-scooter thefts. Between June 1st and August 3rd, they received three reports of e-scooter thefts at the Activities and Recreation Center on Peabody Drive.

(Champiagn–jc)  – Parkland College and Cache Energy have partnered to launch a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship program for Industrial Manufacturing Technicians, creating a talent pipeline to support advanced manufacturing and next-generation energy technologies. The  one-year apprenticeship program  combines paid on-the-job learning at Cache Energy with technical training at Parkland, including coursework in blueprint reading, industrial Cache Energy control devices, electronic systems repair, and welding. Apprentices will develop skills in equipment operation and maintenance, quality systems, technical documentation, and continuous improvement while earning progressively higher wages as they demonstrate competency.

(The Center Square) – Illinois Corn Growers Association President Mark Bunselmeyer says it is disappointing that the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry did not advance a farm bill on Thursday before the August recess.The ICGA said in a statement that Illinois farmers and the agriculture industry are left with uncertainty as the current farm bill extension is set to expire on Sept. 30.Bunselmeyer said the Association wants Congress to refine the legislation so it maintains the bipartisan support needed for passage.

(The Center Square) – Illinois Governor . J.B. Pritzker has released a letter to the chief executives of seven oil companies, asking why Illinois drivers are paying higher prices at the pump while the CEOs’ businesses report record profits.

The governor asked the CEOs to return profits to consumers, provide transparency around pricing and operations, and share information on executive compensation.

Pritzker said the companies’ record profits are a result of the war with Iran. 

(Champaign-jm) — The second teenager arrested in connection to the deadly MarketPlace Mall shooting in March has been charged as an adult. WCIA 3 reports Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz says she filed a petition to transfer the case against 16 year old Jaden Wright to adult court. He’s charged with four counts of first degree murder in the shooting death of 16 year old Jaylen Bailey outside of Dicks House of Sport. 15 year old Braylin Vellon is also charged with murder in the case. If convicted Vellon and Wright both face 20 to 60 years behind bars and because the murder was committed by firing a gun, they face an additional 20 years.

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois House investigating committee held its first hearing to discuss misconduct of State Representative Carol Ammons Thursday. A federal grand jury indicted Ammons on wire fraud and other charges. The committee is made up of three Democrats and three Republicans. Ammons did not attend the hearing.

(Rantoul–dm)-The Rantoul Township High School Board of Education will hold their regular monthly meeting Monday August 10th,  Items on the agenda include approval of the purchase of Counseling Center furniture, approval of an amended Fiscal Year 27 Administrator Contract, and authorize The Superintendent to close Student Activity accounts.  There will also be a presentation by the Village of Rantoul on Housing Incentives.  The meeting is scheduled to start at 6pm in the Rantoul Township High School Boardroom.

(The Center Square) – Gas prices have swung up and down for Illinois drivers in recent weeks, as they have across the country. A spokeswoman for AAA attributed much of the current costs to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. According to AAA data, the average price for regular unleaded in Illinois was $4.30 per gallon on Thursday, up from $3.42 one year ago. Molly Hart, a spokeswoman for AAA Auto Club Group, told The Center Square prices are a few cents lower than last week’s average price at the pump in Illinois. Hart said the factors that play into the price of fuel include geopolitical conflicts, but also weather impacts on domestic refinery production and regular seasonal price changes.

(Springfield-jm) – A new Illinois law will require employers to pay people while they serve on jury duty. The law requires businesses with more than 25 workers to pay their employees the regular pay rate during jury duty. Sponsors say this is an attempt to address the financial disincentives that exist for potential jurors to serve. Federal courts pay jurors $50 per day, but county courts provide a minimal rate. The National Federation of Independent Businesses opposed the change saying the government should pay their employees for jury duty.

“TWOsday” August 18 features $2 admission for adults and $2 carnival rides. Veterans and Gold Star families receive free admission on Aug. 16.Seniors and scouts in uniform get in free on Aug. 17.First responders and health care workers with ID get in free on Aug. 21. The fair runs from Aug. 13 through Aug. 23 at the state fairgrounds in Springfield.

(Champaign County-jm) — The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office released results from two recent speed enforcement campaigns during July. The enforcement details took place on July 22nd and 24th. During the two day campaign, deputies issued 24 speeding tickets, 6 traffic warnings and 4 tickets for other traffic offenses. The Sheriff’s Office says speed enforcement campaigns will continue in August.

(Springfield-jm) – A new state law will require high schools to include CPR training on female manikans. The American Heart Association says women are 27 percent less likely than a man to receive bystander CPR because of hesitation or misconceptions. The requirement goes into effect during the 2029-2030 school year.

(Buckley-jm) – Construction on a solar farm and battery storage facility near Buckley could begin as early as this fall. Allium Renewable Energy of Chicago is seeking a building permit from Iroquois County to construct a 50 megawatt solar farm and 10 megawatt battery storage facility. It’s expected to bring around 100 construction jobs and 5 permanent jobs.

The Center Square) – The Liberty Justice Center has sent letters to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and attorneys general in three other states, warning that school districts’ decisions to withhold information from parents regarding students' purported gender transitions violate the U.S. Constitution and federal law.  The center said parents have a right under the First and Fourteenth Amendments to direct the education of their children. 

(Bloomington-jm) – Travelers will need to allow extra time if you’re planning to fly out of Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington. The airport is renovating its short term parking lot. The existing parking lots pavement is being ripped out and replaced. The project is expected to be completed by November. The airport says you can still park in the long term lot and use the free shuttles to get to the terminal.

(Champaign-jm) – The driver accused of hitting and killing a construction worker in Champaign has entered a not guilty plea in Champaign County court. 29 year old Quamaine Fletcher of Tennessee pleaded not guilty to a single count of reckless homicide and has requested a trial by jury. The May 27th crash took the life of 65 year old Steven Cornettt of Danville. Fletcher allegedly was driving 65 mph in the 45 mph construction zone, when he reached down to pick up his phone which had fallen, when the crash happened. He’s due back in court again August 19th.

(Mahomet-jm) — Voters in Mahomet will see a referendum on the November ballot to approve construction of a new $84 million school by issuing bonds.The school board approved the referendum, which would allow the construction of the new school without raising the tax rate. The school would be constructed on 38 acres the district already owns. If approved on November 3rd, the school would be completed and ready in the fall of 2029.

(Champaign–jc)  The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a single-family home in the 700 block of Doisy Lane around 10 pm last night.

 Once on the scene, fire crews reported the occupants were outside and found light smoke coming from the garage.  Firefighters extended multiple hose lines and were able to keep the fire contained to the garage.  The cause of this fire has not been determined and no injuries were reported.

(The Center Square) – Illinois has joined 24 other states in a third lawsuit challenging tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on more than 80 countries. The complaint filed in the U.S. The Court of International Trade contends that the tariffs exceed the administration’s legal authority and violate the Administrative Procedure Act. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said he is confident he and his colleagues will prevail after the international trade court and the U.S. Supreme Court already found the Trump tariffs to be unlawful.

(The Center Square) – Growing calls for his resignation have plagued Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch since late last week, when an investigation report into allegations of sexual harassment against former Rep. Harry Benton was released. On Tuesday morning, Gov. J.B. Pritzker said there’s more to be seen before he or anyone should call for Welch’s resignation, despite the report detailing inaction by Welch’s office three years ago after being made aware of the first harassment claim against Benton.

Pritzker noted that House leadership was ultimately up to the vote of a majority of lawmakers, and he’d leave the discussion on Welch’s role to them.

(Paxton-jm) – Paxton Police arrested three people following a traffic stop in Paxton Sunday morning. Officers stopped a car in the 800 block of East Patton around 2 am for a vehicle violation. During the stop, 27 year old Damian Wilson, a passenger in the vehicle stopped, who was known to be on parole. A search of Wilson and his belongings uncovered multiple baggies of suspected cocaine, meth, digital scales, packaging materials and a pistol.  Wilson is charged with possession of meth, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, armed violence, violation of parole and two counts each of conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice and solicitation to commit obstruction of justice.

(Springfield–jc)  Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly says his department has used troopers from across the state to combat increased road rage in the Chicago area. Kelly said ISP deployed troopers from its statewide special operations groups during the first six months of this year on saturation patrols and special details on Chicago expressways. State police are encouraging the public to learn more about avoiding road rage by visiting the ISP website.

(Springfield–jc)  – A new report says Illinois recorded the sharpest rise in residential electricity prices of any state in the latest 2026 federal snapshot, with the average jumping nearly 29 percent from May of last year to May of this year..

Pritzker at the signing of two insurance-related bills Tuesday morning, after he said his support wasn’t political.The bills allow the Illinois Department of Insurance to regulate and review insurance companies over proposed policy rate hikes for homeowner and auto insurance. (Gilman-jm) – One person is dead following a workplace accident in Gilman. It happened at Incobrasa on the city’s west side Monday. Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum identified the individual as 53 year old Adrian Munoz. Cheatum says Munoz was helping load railcars when he fell from the top of a car. An autopsy is scheduled for today in McLean County.

(Champaign County-jm) – Champaign County Crimestoppers are asking for the publics help on a woman passing counterfeit bills. They say on July 20th, a woman and two children entered Champaign’s Walmart on Prospect Avenue, collected multiple items throughout the store and then went to the registers to pay. The employee scanned just under $500 worth of merchandise. The woman attempted to pay with counterfeit $100 bills. When the employee went to verify with a supervisor that the bills were counterfeit, the woman and children fled. The woman was described as black, approximately 30-40 years old with tattoos.

(The Center Square) – A law in Illinois creating restrictions on social media use and online activity for children was recently signed, though it won’t take effect until 2028. One industry-backed trade group continues to call it unconstitutional.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the new public act Friday, and described it as a new way to protect minors from addictive algorithmic features of social media and to prevent exposure to harmful content.

(Ludlow-jm) – A Ludlow man has been arrested in connection to a motorcycle accident last week near the community. 50 year old Jacob Walden of Ludlow was arrested after he hit a motorcycle on Route 45 at County Road 3500 then fled. Walden was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, driving with a revoked license and failure to report an accident with personal injury. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered to be detained pretrial. He’s due back in court again August 24th.

(Iroquois County-jm) – The trial against the former Iroquois County Public Health Director has been postponed. The Illinois Attorney General’s office asked the scheduled October trial date against Dee Schippert be postponed. A status hearing is scheduled for September 24th. Shippert faces a felony 33 count indictment including theft by deception involving government property, forgery and official misconduct. She’s accused of stealing over $100,000 from the health department by submitting fraudulent time sheets for work she did not perform, including overtime and backpay she didn’t earn.

(Coles County–jc)  –First-degree murder charges have been filed in connection with the death of a man whose remains were found in Lake Mattoon on June 28th .James Adams, 26, and Robin Turner, 62, were previously charged with concealment of a homicide and dismembering a human body following the death of Dalewayne Turner, 38, of Plainfield. Illinois State Police said further searches of the lake and a residence in Plainfield led to the additional charges.

(Chicago–jc) Chicago officials say there were ten arrests during Lollapalooza 2026 from July 30 through Aug. 2.According to the Office of Emergency Management & Communications, the preliminary arrest total was lower than in 2025, when there were 12 arrests. (The Center Square) – According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Illinois is 30 cents higher than it was one month ago and 90 cents higher than it was one year ago.  AAA listed the average Illinois price at 4 dollars 34 cents per gallon on Monday.  The national average on Monday was 4 dollars 10 cents. All states around Illinois are in the upper 3 dollars per gallon. Closer to home, the average price for a gallon of gas in Champaign is 4 dollars 18 cents,  4 dollars 30 cents on average in Paxton and 4 dollars 39 cents on average in Rantoul. In Danville the average price is 3 dollars 89 cents per gallon and in Iroquois County its 4 dollars  21 cents.

(Springfield-jm) – A report from Illinois’ Legislative Inspector General says former State Representative Harry Benton violated state law by engaging in acts of sexual harassment. The findings are detailed in a summary report dated June 30th and sent to House Speaker Emanual “Chris” Welch. The investigation into allegations against Benton began after the Legislative Inspector General’s Office received a complaint on March 4th. The report found two allegations of sexual harassment were supported by the investigation. Benton resigned in early July. The report dismissed several other allegations as unfounded.

(Springfield-jm) – Governor J-B Pritzker signed a bill into law Friday to require private insurance companies to cover seizure detection devices. There are currently multiple FDA approved devices to alert people to oncoming or ongoing seizures. Sponsors say these tools can cost anywhere from $250 and $2000. The law requires insurance companies to cover the medically necessary devices with a maximum cost sharing amount of $50 per year.

(Paxton-jm) – A Paxton ice cream establishment has changed names. The Paxton Dairy Queen has been rebranded to Dairy Dream. The owners sold the naming rights back to Dairy Queen after corporate wanted a significant investment to upgrade the business along Route 45. Last week, the Cissna Park Dairy Queen also announced they will be rebranding later this month.

(Hoopeston-jm) – Two people have been arrested after allegedly stealing 60 pairs of shoes from a Hoopeston non profit meant to help kids heading back to school. 45 year old Kathy Stancle and 49 year old Jeff Chandler have been arrested on theft charges. Hoopeston Police say the pair allegedly stole the shoes from the Hoopeston Multi-Agency Service Center. 40 of the 60 pairs of shoes were recovered.

(SPringfield–jc)  –Illinoisans who have defaulted on their student loan repayments will soon see increased opportunities for employment and retention at state agencies, thanks to a new law spearheaded by State Senator Paul Faraci.  

Under previous Illinois law, any state agency employee whose student loans were in default for a period of six or more months, and in an amount of $600 or more, was required to make a satisfactory loan repayment arrangement with the loan’s cosigner or guarantor. If the employee failed to establish a satisfactory repayment arrangement prior to their sixth month of employment, the agency was required to terminate the individual’s employment.

(The Center Square) – The closure of seven Save A Lot grocery stores on Chicago's South and West sides has renewed debate over whether government subsidies can effectively address food access in underserved neighborhoods, with one free-market policy expert arguing the shutdowns highlight the limits of public intervention.The stores, operated by Yellow Banana, closed after Save A Lot ended its operating agreement with the company, citing financial challenges that included a sharp decline in SNAP purchases. Chicago had invested $13.5 million to renovate six of the seven locations as part of an effort to expand grocery access in neighborhoods often described as food deserts.

(The Center Square) – The U.S. House approved legislation aimed at preventing credit card companies from using merchant category codes to identify firearm retailers, a measure supporters say protects the privacy of lawful gun owners.

HR 1181, the Protecting Privacy in Purchases Act, would prohibit payment card networks from requiring merchant category codes that distinguish firearm retailers from general merchandise or sporting goods stores. The Department of Justice would enforce the law. U.S. Representative Mary Miller, Republican from Illinois, praised the legislation, saying it would prevent financial institutions from tracking lawful firearm purchases and protect Americans' Second Amendment rights and financial privacy. John Boch, executive director of Guns Save Life, said he supports the bill but doubts it will ever become law.

(Springfield-jm) – A new Illinois law will require schools to include railroad safety information in student handbooks. Sponsors say people have been concerned about schools near railroads and ensuring students know the protocols in place to keep them safe. Schools could opt out of the requirement if their school boards find railroad safety is covered in their curriculum.

(Springfield-jm) – A new Illinois law bans private schools from penalizing students or staff with religious hairstyles. The law expands the Jett Hawkins Act that prohibits public and private schools from banning hairstyles associated with race, ethnicity or hair texture.

(Springfield–jc)  –Electric utility Ameren, which covers southern and central Illinois, wants to raise prices for ratepayers.  The company has made a new claim to the Citizens Utility Board to increase rates for what the company calls a reconciliation filing, totalling $65.3 million.CUB Executive Director Sarah Moskowitz challenged the company over what she said was wasteful spending, with a burden falling onto customers.

(The Center Square) – Signed into law in the spring, a program known as Families Receiving Emergency Support for Hunger, or FRESH, is set to send out one-time payments of $400 to Illinoisans who were removed from the federal SNAP program.The $70 million taxpayer-funded program is part of the state’s FY27 budget, and state officials said about 100,000 residents will receive the payout, which began distribution Saturday. The program will only distribute to households who lost SNAP benefits between May and August, when new federal work and eligibility requirements took effect.
