(Springfield-jm) - Thousands of Illinoisans are getting a fresh financial start after Governor JB Pritzker announced that more than $1 billion in medical debt has been erased across the state. The relief has assisted more than 500,000 households, according to the governor. The state partnered with the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt to forgive outstanding hospital bills. To qualify, individuals must have a household income below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level or possess medical debt amounting to 5% or more of their household income.

(Rantoul-jm) – It’s the longest prison sentence in the history of the Fairbury-based CHAOS Task Force that investigates sex crimes against children in Central Illinois. Garrett Moore of Rantoul has been sentenced to 200 years in prison for disseminating child pornography in Woodford and Livingston counties. Fairbury and El Paso Police arrested Moore in November . 2024 after investigators said he tried to arrange sexual encounters with “multiple” children, according to a CHAOS release. The release said Moore also sent “multiple” videos of child pornography involving children between the ages of three and 13. Woodford County Judge Michael Stroh sentenced Moore to 105 years for distributing child porn, on top of the 95-years he received last November for similar convictions in Livingston County. Moore will have to serve at least 50% of the sentence, but he’ll likely wind up spending the rest of his life behind bars.

(Champaign County-jm) – When voters in Champaign County head to the polls, they will see more than just candidates on the ballot. They will also be asked to weigh in on how the county should handle a nearly $2 million budget deficit. When voters step into the voting booth, they will be asked three yes-or-no questions that could shape the future of county services. On the ballot, voters are being asked whether they support raising the county sales tax — which would not apply to medicine or groceries — increasing property taxes or reducing county services. The questions are nonbinding, meaning the results will not automatically change policy. Officials say if voters reject tax increases, that will send a clear message to county leaders to make cuts as they prepare the next fiscal year budget.

(Normal-jm) – Incoming students will pay more next school year to attend Illinois State University, after ISU’s governing board kept costs unchanged the previous two years. Friday, ISU’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to raise the base tuition rate 5%, or $20.11 per credit hour to $422.30 for new undergraduate students living in Illinois. The same students will pay 1.7% more or an additional $2 per credit hour for mandatory and outreach fees, plus 4% more for on-campus housing and dining. The increases are meant to offset the impact inflation has had on providing student services, programs, food, and repair and maintenance of university facilities. The overall cost for incoming undergrads next school year will be between $28,705.29 to $30,605.80, school administrators said.
