Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar died Sunday

(Champaign–jc)  Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar died Sunday at the age of 79.

Edgar, a Republican, served as governor from 1991 to 1999. He also served as Illinois secretary of state from 1981 to 1991.Jim Edgar passed away Sunday in Springfield from complications related to treatment for pancreatic cancer

 

(Rantoul–jc)  – Village of Rantoul authorities are investigating a deadly stabbing that happened on Saturday night. Authorities say officers were called to the intersection of East. Wabash Avenue and Frederick Street around 10 p.m. on Saturday. Rantoul Police Chief Anthony Brown said a male died following the stabbing. The investigation continues this morning.Anyone with information is asked to call the Rantoul Police department. 

 

(Springfield–jc)  Illinois Governor. J.B. Pritzker has signed an executive order to establish the Statewide Vaccine Access Initiative.The move calls for the Illinois Department of Public Health Director, Dr. Sameer Vohra, to issue a Standing Order to allow eligible providers in pharmacy and other clinical settings to administer vaccines recommended by IDPH. Pritzker said the executive order was necessitated by federal actions, including the dismissal of top administrators from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

(Decatur–jc0  An Illinois lawmaker warns that, according to the latest Nation’s Report Card, Illinois students are still behind in reading and math post-pandemic, while homeschool advocates call for more parent-driven education options.

State Representative . Reagan Deering, Republican from -Decatur, a Mt. Zion Community School Board member and parent, said politicians prioritized teachers unions over students, leaving children behind academically.

 

(The Center Square) – Former Wirepoints president and banker Ted Dabrowski has launched his campaign for Illinois governor. The Wilmette Republican addressed supporters from the front steps of his home on Friday. Dabrowski left a career in international banking to work on policy solutions for Illinois, most recently as president of Wirepoints. Dabrowski also introduced his candidate for lieutenant governor, emergency room Dr. Carrie Mendoza.

(Washington-jm) – Three Democratic candidates are vying to replace retiring U-S Senator Dick Durbin. One of those is Representative Robin Kelly, whose district extends from the southeast side of Chicago to all of Iroquois, most of Ford, the northern half of Vermilion and the northern third of Champaign Counties. Gun legislation has been a top priority for Kelly. With gun violence still such a prevalent issue, Kelly was asked during an interview with Capitol News Illinois, why voters should trust the Democratic Party on this issue…

(Rantoul–jc)  A single car crash near Rantoul caused some traffic delays near last night. State Police say just after 8, troopers were called to U S Route 136 and County Road 1950 East, just east of Rantoul. Detours were set up for several hours. No word on the crash was provided.

 

(Bloomington–jc)  The IL Corn Growers Association is optimistic after the federal government's  publication of the Make America Healthy Again Commission’s strategy report. Officials with the Illinois Corn Growers Association say  the Commission has listened to the comments of America’s farmers and responded by acknowledging the role pesticides play in conservation priorities on our more vulnerable and most productive soils. District 12 Association Director and Farmer Don Guinnip, called the report an opportunity for the best available science to drive on-farm decisions.

 

(USDA–dm)- After the August forecast of record corn production and yields, USDA in September continues to report this year's crop should reach record highs.

(The Center Square) – An Illinois lawmaker and law enforcement officer reacts to Gov. J.B. Pritzker's enacting a law requiring schools to report firearms or threats to principals, a move supporters say improves safety. State Rep. Dennis Tipsword, R-Metamore, described the bill as “just common sense kind of legislation” that ensures threats are at least reported to the proper school authorities.Tipsword explained that while the law establishes a baseline for reporting, schools and local law enforcement agencies can still conduct full threat assessments if they choose.

 

(Danville–jc)  –A Danville man has been sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted of the carjacking and murder of Daniel Walter in 2020.Kevin Marshall, 35, was previously convicted of second-degree murder for the killing of Latifah Cross in 2013. Prosecutors say Marshall killed Walter about three months after he was released from custody.

Downtown Gibson City will host its monthly Friday Night Car Cruise on Friday, September 19, featuring classic cars cruising and parked along Sangamon Avenue, plus live music by Jordan and Jill from 6-9 p.m. and food vendors throughout the evening.

 

The Elliott Amvets will hold their monthly breakfast on Saturday, September 20th starting at 6am. Cost is $8 and includes pancakes and sausage and your choice of orange juice or coffee.
