(Champaign-jm) – One person has died and two suspects have been arrested after a shooting in Champaign on Sunday. Officers with the Champaign Police Department responded near the area of W. Springfield Avenue and Kenwood Road around 3 a.m. The police department said they had received “multiple reports” of a shooting with injuries. Once officers arrived on scene, they found a 35-year-old man from Urbana with multiple gunshot wounds. He was unconscious and not breathing. First responders provided medical aid until he could be brought to a nearby hospital, but he died shortly after. After investigating, the police department learned that the man was in a parking lot when two people approached him and fired multiple shots. The victim was hit several times and the suspects, later identified as 32-year-old Tyson Moore of Champaign and 37-year-old Deandre Newbill of Urbana, fled. The vehicle that Moore and Newbill used to flee was found in the 2000 block of Moreland Boulevard a short time later, police said. Two firearms were also found. Both Moore and Newbill have been arrested and are facing preliminary charges of first-degree murder.

Tebrugge, a business owner and public servant with 13 years of experience, has announced his candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in Illinois’ 15th Congressional District. Tebrugge emphasized the need for bipartisan solutions and criticized the current representative, Mary Miller, for her lack of engagement with constituents. Tebrugge is a former corrections officer and educator. The 15th Congressional District covers parts of Champaign and Vermilion Counties and extends from the Illinois/Indiana border all the way to the Mississippi River.
(Springfield-jm) – Governor J.B. Pritzker on Friday signed two bills into law expanding reproductive health care access in Illinois. House Bill 3637 allows health providers in Illinois to continue prescribing the abortion pill mifepristone. This law will ensure that Illinois healthcare providers can continue to offer this safe and effective medication, protecting a vital component of reproductive care. House Bill 3709 requires public colleges and universities with student health services to provide birth control and medication abortion.

(Paxton-jm) – Paxton first responders were called to a two vehicle accident on I-57 Saturday afternoon. It happened just north of the Paxton exit in the northbound lanes. No injuries were reported.
(Rantoul-jm) – Over 100,000 visitors packed the former Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul for the Half Century of Progress over the weekend. The Farm Progress Show in Decatur gets underway Tuesday and runs through Thursday.
(The Center Square) – Illinois taxpayers can now look at how the state spent their money in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2023, but they're still waiting for the report for the fiscal year that ended over a year ago. The fiscal year 2023 annual comprehensive financial report for Illinois was released earlier this month, more than two years after the end of the spending plan. Comptroller Susana Mendoza said she is frustrated with the delay because taxpayers need to know how their money was spent.

(Undated-jm) – The USDA is predicting a record corn crop of almost 17 billion bushels nationwide — which experts said may keep farmers from breaking even. The ears are coming in smaller than just one year ago, at close to six inches versus eight. Right now corn is selling for less than $4 a bushel, which is typically the break-even point for farmers.
(Illinois–jc) –Today is the first day of classes at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign along with Northern Illinois, Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois universities. The fall semester opened last Monday at Illinois State and Southern Illinois.

(Springfield-jm) – Governor JB Pritzker has signed a bill into law to expand a grant program for agriculture education teachers. School districts can currently apply for a state grant covering 50% of the personal service cost for agriculture teachers. The new law clarifies that teachers should receive 100% of that compensation for working 60 additional days, or 400 hours, outside their regular teaching duties.
(Springfield-jm) – Illinois started to provide standard driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants last year. Governor JB Pritzker has now signed a bill into law to allow them to become driving instructors. In 2013, Illinois led the country as one of the first states to issue temporary visitor driver's licenses to help drivers who passed road tests regardless of immigration status. The 2024 law allowed undocumented immigrants to receive standard IDs without the large purple mark stating not valid for identification. House Bill 3125 will allow anyone with a Temporary Visitor Drivers License for at least two years to teach driving courses. Sponsors said this change will help expand the people eligible to become driving instructors without reducing qualifications for the job. Potential driving instructors must also be authorized to work in the United States.

(Champaign-jm) – The bridge carrying a Champaign road over Interstate 74 will be closed for the next few weeks to accommodate repair work by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The bridge carrying Duncan Road will close starting today. IDOT will be closing the bridge in order to repair a damaged bridge structure. This closure is expected to last three weeks while repairs happen.
(McLean County-jm) – A Mansfield man who was wanted in LeRoy has been captured nearly two weeks after he was first reported to be on the run. In a Facebook post Friday evening, the LeRoy Police Department said that 41-year-old Andrew Coffin was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in El Paso, Illinois, on Thursday. Coffin was originally reported as a felon on the run on Aug. 8 by LeRoy Police. Later that day, police reported that Coffin was no longer in McLean County. Following his arrest on Thursday, he was booked into the McLean County Jail pending a detention hearing per the SAFE-T Act today.

(Undated-jm) – A local activist and 2022 Central Illinois Business 40 Under 40 Woman of the Year has announced her bid for District 104 state representative, marking her second run for an area political office. Mary Catherine Roberson is currently working for the office of Representative Robin Kelly. Roberson ran for Vermilion County Clerk in 2018 as the Democratic nominee but lost to incumbent Republican Cathy Jenkins. The 104th District seat is currently held by state Representative Brandun Schweizer, a Republican, who defeated Democratic challenger Jarrett Clem to retain the position on November 5, 2024.
(Springfield–jc) – The Citizens Utility Board is encouraging Ameren customers to attend Illinois Commerce Commission forums next week. CUB says Ameren’s $131.1 million rate-hike plan is nearly triple what the utility could legally justify.ICC forums are scheduled Wednesday evening in Springfield and Thursday evening in East St. Louis.
