The 2024 Republican National Convention is done and Republicans say the party

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Department of Employment Security announced that unemployment increased to 5 percent. The May revised unemployment rate was 4.9 percent. The national unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in June, up slightly from the previous month. The number of unemployed workers in the state was 327,900, up over 3 percent from the prior month, and up nearly 19 percent over the same month one year ago.

 

(Elliott-jm) – Multiple people were injured following an accident near Elliott Thursday afternoon. It happened on Route 9 and 1000 east and involved a semi vs car. At least two medical helicopters were requested to the scene.

(Philo-jm) – Someone broke into several storage units in Philo overnight Sunday. Now, the Champaign County Sheriff's Office wants the public's help in finding the suspect. The facility is located on West Monroe Street. Authorities say the burglaries happened around 3:12 a.m. Security footage captured the suspect and suspect vehicle.

(Savoy-jm) – A plan to transform the heart of Savoy is gaining traction. The Downtown Development Group sent out a public survey last month for feedback on the future plaza. They've been getting hundreds of responses and now they're just a few steps away from bringing it to life. Project leaders say there is still more negotiating that needs to happen with the village, but are confident they'll get something squared away no later than December.

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois is now home to a first of its kind law that opens the door for children to be entitled to compensation for appearing in their parents or guardians social media content. The law went into effect earlier this month with a goal of protecting children from "vlogging," or the production of video blogs created for the purpose of generating income. As part of its reach, the groundbreaking legislation introduced by state Sen. David Koehler, also requires parents to establish a trust account for the minor in question provided they earn revenue from their child's likeness in videos posted online and hold it in a trust account until the child turns 18. The law further stipulates that a minor is involved in the business of "vlogging" whenever at least 30% of the vlogger's video content over a month-long period is produced using the child's "likeness, name or photograph of the minor."

(Kankakee County-jm) – The Kankakee County Sheriff's Office is extending a heads-up to citizens when it comes to those unsolicited phone calls. The Sheriff's Office is issuing another advisory – to exercise caution should you receive unsolicited calls. Scammers attempt to get your personal information, targeting different communities. These scammers often impersonate representatives of the Sheriff's Office or other law enforcement agencies, frequently leaving voicemails. The local sheriff's office states callers may falsely claim to be from the Civil Process or Warrant Division, demanding payment to avoid arrest or other legal actions. The Sheriff's Office reminds residents that the Sheriff's Office will never solicit or demand funds in this manner.

(Mahomet-jm) – In a controversial move that has drawn sharp criticism from both sides of the aisle, Governor JB Pritzker has signed Senate Bill 1289, a bill allowing carbon sequestration under the Mahomet Aquifer, a critical water source for central Illinois. Despite strong opposition from local legislators, including State Sen. Chapin Rose, the Governor has signed it into law without a ban on CO2 storage beneath this vital aquifer. In response, Sen. Rose filed new legislation to help protect the Mahomet Aquifer.

WPXN Weekend News Notes...

 

Tonight at the Iroquois County Fair its the 4-H style show at 4 and Bucking Bulls Rodeo at 8. On Saturday its Christian singers Colton Dixon and Natalie Layne at 7. On Sunday, the final day of the fair, its the all faith church service at 930 and the tractor pull and car show at noon.

 

The Eastern Illinois Foodbank will hold their foodmobile today from 9-9:30 at the Piper City Community Center, 10-10:30 at Living Word Church in Roberts, 11-11:30 at Melvin Convenient, 12:15-12:45 at the Gibson City city hall, 1-1:30 at the Elliott village hall and 2-2:30 at Paxton Hardware and Rental.

 

The Gibson City third Friday car cruises will take place this evening with cruising starting at 5 and live music by Not Petty, a Tom Petty tribute band from 6-9 pm.

 

Rantoul will hold their third Freedom Friday this evening with the band The Woodchips performing in downtown Rantoul. There's also inflatables, bags tournament, food and drinks.

 

The 171st Champaign County Fair will take place today through the 27th at the fairgrounds in Urbana. Tonight its dirt track racing at 6:30. On Saturday it's the demo derby at 5. On Sunday it's the draft horse show at 4. 

 

The 2024 Roberts Fun Day will take place on Saturday with a craft and vendor fair from 8:30-4, silent auction 8:30-5, 50/50 drawing 8:30-6:15, touch a truck 9-11, inflatables, water slides and foam daddy 9-5, bingo 9:30-11, parade 11:30, a natural high singing group 4-5, bags tournament 4-7 and Seasonal disorder playing from 7-10.

 

Paxton IGA will hold a cookout benefiting  St. Mary's CCW on Saturday from 10-2.
