The Fisher Community Fair takes place this week

(Paxton-jm) – A Paxton home was destroyed by fire over the weekend. It happened around 11:30 Saturday night near the intersection of Holmes and Maple. Firefighters from Paxton, Buckley and Loda spent several hours battling the flames. There’s no word on what caused the fire. No injuries were reported however, one cat did perish in the fire.

 

(Champaign-jm) – Springfield Avenue in Champaign will be closed to traffic for five months starting Monday, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced. The road will be closed while the overpass carrying Springfield Avenue over Copper Slough — just east of Duncan Road — gets replaced. 

 

(Champaign County-jm) – Both lanes of northbound I-57 south of Champaign were shut down yesterday after a vehicle caught fire. The fire happened at Milepost 223, between Pesotum and Savoy. Officials with the Illinois State Police said no injuries are being reported.

(Savoy-jm) – Willard Airport will host pop-up events for TSA PreCheck enrollment to help make flight prep and security easier for passengers. TSA PreCheck can make moving through airport security less time-consuming and stressful for low-risk travelers. Enrolled flyers don’t need to remove their shoes, laptops, 3-1-1 liquids, belts or light jackets for inspection. Children 17 and under can also utilize these benefits if an adult with TSA PreCheck is shown on their boarding pass. Enrollment events will take place Aug. 5 – 9 and Dec. 2 – 6 in Willard Airport’s second-floor conference room.

 

(Undated–jc)  Rantoul Township High School board members will look to approve a contract for a resource officer with the village when they meet tonight. A look and approval of the employee handbook and a purchase of an Open-Get Weapons Detection System are also on the agenda. The Rantoul Township High School Board of Education meets  at 6pm in the Rantoul High School Cafetorium. In Gibson City at 7, council members will consider a pair of planning commission recommendations on a special use request by Gibson Hospital and annexing 15 acres for a drainage project. In Paxton at 7, the Ford County Board will consider creating an ad hoc committee for Farm #3, consider using ARPA funding for public safety equipment and cyber security services.

The 2024 Fisher Community Fair will take place this week. Today, it's the queen pageant at 6. On Tuesday its $2 amusement rides starting at 6 and the redneck games at 7. On Wednesday it's children’s day all day, armband night on the midway at 6 at the ITPA pulls at 6:30. On Thursday it's Bingo at 6:30 along with the Philo Country Music Show also at 6:30 and ITPA pulls at 7. On Friday its $25 armband special starting at 6 and country music group Sawyer Brown at 7. OnSaturday, it's the 5k at 8 am, mutt show at 9, car show at 11, drone racing from 1-3 and demolition derby at 6.

 

(Vermilion County-jm) – The Vermilion County Board is expected to vote Tuesday on whether to place an advisory referendum on the November ballot.  It would ask voters whether the Vermilion County Board should correspond with Boards of other counties in Illinois – except Cook County – about the possibility of separating from Cook County to form a new state, and seek admission to the Union as such, subject to the approval of the people.

 

(Undated-jm) – To help seniors learn how to protect themselves from scam artists and fraudulent businesses, State Senator Paul Faraci is hosting senior fraud seminars in partnership with the CRIS Healthy Aging Center of Vermilion and Champaign County. Faraci’s office is hosting two senior fraud seminars on Monday, July 15. The Danville seminar will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the CRIS Healthy Aging Center located at 309 N. Franklin St. The Champaign seminar will begin at 3 p.m. at the CRIS Healthy Aging Center located at 4116 Fieldstone Rd.

 

(Washington-jm) – USDA recently announced some specialty crop and organic growers will have expanded crop insurance options available starting in the 2025 crop year. Rod Bain reports…

 

 

(Vermilion county-jm) – Nicolas Boileau has been sworn in as Vermilion County’s new judge in the Fifth Judicial Circuit of Illinois. Judge Boileau is filling the vacancy created by the retiring Judge Derek J. Girton.
