(Champaign-jm) – Champaign Police were dispatched just before noon Wednesday, to the 900 block of Newcastle Drive for a report of a shooting with injuries. Upon arrival, officers located a 21-year-old woman from Champaign who reported that she had been the victim of a domestic battery and had shot the other party, a 24-year-old male from Champaign, during the struggle. The man left the scene following the incident. Police have interviewed the male party, who also claims to have been the victim of domestic battery in this incident. The initial investigation indicated that the two parties had been involved in a domestic dispute that escalated into a physical altercation. The female subject produced a handgun and the firearm discharged. According to witnesses on-scene, the male was injured in the discharge. The male then left the scene in a vehicle. The female subject was confirmed to lawfully own the firearm.

 

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois House adopted a Senate Joint Resolution, sponsored by State Representative Mike Marron of Fithian to honor the life and public service of Senator Scott Bennett. SJR32 designates Interstate 74 east of US 45 in Champaign-Urbana to the Indiana border as the "Senator Scott M. Bennett Memorial Highway".  Marron spoke on the resolution when it was adopted in committee but spoke more about his colleague and friend as he presented the measure for adoption…

(Sheldon-jm) – The Big Top is setting up shop in Sheldon.  The Circus is coming to Sheldon on Sunday, June 4.  Tent raise starts at 9am, Midway opens at 1pm and performances are held at 2 and 4:30pm. Everyone's invited to enjoy all the nostalgic events at the circus. Set-up is at the Sheldon Soccer Field.

(Farmer City-jm) – The Illinois State Police has revealed new information about a crash on Interstate 74 that resulted in the death of an Ohio farmer known for a viral Internet meme. Dave Brandt, 76, was the face of the meme dubbed “It ain’t much, but it’s honest work.” Brandt was in Central Illinois picking up red corn and was driving back to his Carroll, Ohio, farm when his truck crashed.  State Police officials said the crash happened last week on Interstate 74 near Farmer City. Brandt, they said, was driving eastbound when for undisclosed reasons, he lost control of his truck. The truck rolled over and Brandt was ejected. Brandt was taken to Carle Hospital in Urbana, where he died from his injuries two days later.

 

(Penfield-jm) – Whether you are an expert fisher or a first-timer, the Champaign County Forest Preserve District has the perfect event for you this weekend. They announced they are hosting “Take Me Fishing: Middle Fork”, a free fishing event for the whole family. The forest preserve shared on social media that they are hosting the event, along with the Homer Lake Interpretive Center on Saturday, May 27. The event will be held from 9-11 a.m. at Cypress Pond at the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. Cane poles and bait will be available for use, but people are also welcome to bring their own. All event fishing is catch-and-release.
