Jason Bunting of Emington replaces Tom Bennett in the Illinois House

(Springfield-jm) – A bill that would ban cat declawing and similar procedures has been introduced in the State Capitol. If the bill passes, anyone who violates it could pay $500 for the first violation, $1,000 for the second and $2,500 for the third. Representative Barbara Hernandez of Aurora is sponsoring the bill saying declawing a cat just because someone doesn’t want them to scratch the furniture is unacceptable.

 

(Springfield-jm) – Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed legislation that involves the state in the siting of Illinois-based clean energy projects and prohibits local bans. The law prevents counties from enacting preemptive local ordinances that ban local wind and solar projects. Dozens of counties objected to the legislation, some saying it could hinder economic growth. Pritzker said last summer that the state would not get involved in the siting of wind and solar farms.

 

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs is urging non-profit groups to apply for grants through his office’s charitable trust program. 200 thousand dollars in grant money is up for grabs during this initial round, available to certain non-profits including food banks and workforce development groups, says Treasurer Frerichs…

(Emington-jm) – A replacement to fill the vacancy in the 106th District has been named. Jason Bunting of Emington replaces Tom Bennett in the Illinois House. Bennett resigned his House position after being named to the Illinois Senate, filling the vacancy in the 53rd District with the retirement of Jason Barickman. The 106th House District comprises of Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, LaSalle, Livingston, McLean, and Will Counties. Bunting is a Livingston County Board member and a regional director for the Illinois Corn Growers Association.

 

(Rantoul-jm) – Two Rantoul teachers are being recognized by the State Board of Education. Rantoul City Schools teachers Christine Jones and Lindsay Pingsterhaus received the meritorious service award.

(Gibson City-jm) – Gibson City Police have released their recent activity report. William Felt was arrested for driving on a suspended license. Jason Hoffman and Israel Gomez were arrested on warrants.

 

(Champaign-jm) – Champaign County Crime Stoppers is asking for help in finding a person who recently failed to appear in court to face criminal charges. Officials said Jovan D. Marshall, 42, was previously charged with possessing a weapon as a felon, but he never appeared in court. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. Marshall is described as being Black with black hair and brown eyes. He is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 145 pounds.

 

(Washington-jm) – Illinois Congresswoman Mary Miller has announced she will not be attending the State of the Union tonight in protest of what she called President Joe Biden’s record of “lying to the American people.” Miller cited Biden’s recent statements about the national security risk of the Chinese spy balloon that flew across the country. Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin said he will host Chris Manson as his guest for the address. Manson works at OSF HealthCare in Peoria and is founder of U.S. Ambulances for Ukraine. 

 

(Undated-jm) – The price of gas has fallen in Illinois according to GasBuddy. The average gas price has fallen 6.3 cents per gallon in the last week averaging $3.59 per gallon. Prices in Illinois are 21.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and 2.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 4.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.44 per gallon.

 

(Springfield-jm) – Governor J-B Pritzker is announcing a new 40 million dollar grant program to develop megasites in Illinois. The grants of at least 250 thousand dollars will go toward developing large sites to be occupied by manufacturers, distribution centers and more, says the Governor…

(Paxton-jm) – The Ford County Soil and Water Conservation District is doing their tree and fish sale. Fish orders are due by April 5th while tree orders are due by March 27th.

 

(Rantoul-jm) – More than 100 cockfighting spurs bound for Illinois were seized by customs officials. The package was labeled as “handcrafted Mexican rattles” and was headed to Rantoul from Mexico City. Customs and Border Protection officers in Louisville, Kentucky, intercepted the package and found 120 sharp cockfighting spurs which are often attached to birds’ legs during cockfights. Cockfighting was banned in the U.S. in 2018.

(Urbana-jm) – The University of Illinois Police Department is warning of a new scam trend on campus after seeing a recent increase in reports: sexual extortion. UIPD officials said these scams generally occur on social media or messaging apps. Scammers will contact a victim and lie about their identity before engaging in a sexually natured conversation with the victim. Eventually, the scammer requests or encourages the victim to send intimate photos or video of themselves. Once the photos or videos are sent, the offender then demands a monetary payment to avoid having the content sent to the victim’s social media contacts. These demands can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

 

(Urbana-jm) – Champaign County Crime Stoppers is asking the public for help in identifying a porch pirate who stole a package from an Urbana home last month. Officials said the theft happened the night of January 10. in the 1500 block of South Smith Road. The home’s doorbell camera recorded a Black male approaching the house, stealing the package and leaving the scene on foot. The thief was wearing a black zip-up jacket, a black stocking cap with white lettering on the front and blue jeans with holes in the knee.
