(Springfield-jm) – Gas prices are on the rise again, and Illinois is home to some of the highest prices in the nation. Nationally, the average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.42. AAA reports that’s 33 cents more than a month ago. In central Illinois, the price is close to $3.60 a gallon, but averages close to $4 a gallon in Chicago, one of the most expensive markets in the country.  Illinois’ gas tax went up in January and will increase again in July.

 

(Springfield-jm) – Yesterday marked the 3 year anniversary of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Illinois. Since that initial case, more than 4 million Illinoisans have been infected with the virus and over 36 thousand have died. He adds that there is more work to be done to stop the spread of misinformation and to address health inequities.

 

(Champaign-jm) – A Champaign man is under arrest after University of Illinois Police officials said officers found two guns in his possession during a traffic stop on campus. Officials said Ronald Bufkin was pulled over at the intersection of Fourth and Chalmers Streets because he disobeyed a stop sign. When Bufkin stepped out of the car to complete a field sobriety test, the officer saw a gun tucked in Bufkin’s waistband. The gun turned out to be loaded, as was a second gun discovered inside the car. Bufkin has a FOID card but does not have a concealed carry permit, officials said. He was arrested and charged with an aggravated unlawful use of a weapon felony and for diving under the influence.

(Danforth-jm) – An Iroquois County man is under arrest and facing extradition to Alabama where he faces numerous felony charges for sex crimes against children. Iroquois County Sheriff’s officials said Brenden Noel, aged 30 from rural Danforth, was arrested by members of the Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service. Noel had an outstanding Iroquois County arrest warrant that charged him with violating the Sex Offender Registration Act, but he also has 11 arrest warrants to his name in Alabama. Those Alabama warrants charged Noel with numerous felonies that include sexual extortion, electronic solicitation of a child, transmitting obscene material to a child by computer and possession of child pornography. Noel is currently in custody at the Iroquois County Jail.

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois voters rejected a proposal in 2020 to change the state's flat income tax to a graduated tax. There are currently discussions to try the measure again. Governor J.B. Pritzker, however, said that's not on his radar.  The Illinois Constitution requires a flat income tax. The progressive income tax proposal would have created different tax rates for different income levels. Voters rejected that idea.  Crain's Chicago Business reported this week that state Senator Robert Martwick plans to offer up the measure again in the coming weeks.

 

(Urbana-jm) – The University of Illinois recently announced that international enrollment in the fall of 2022 set records in both the COVID era and for all time. 

The exact number of international students enrolled at the university in the fall was 11,548, which topped the previous record of 10,826 that was set in 2017. 126 countries are represented by these students, with 87% of students coming from Asia. China led the way with 5,464 students, just under half of all international students. India was the second-most represented country with 2,395 students, a national all-time high, followed by South Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia.

(Urbana-jm) – Plans are moving forward for an Urbana solar farm that could help low-income families.  The city council approved a special permit letting a developer use part of a landfill near East University Avenue and I-74. Right now, the land has a 4-megawatt solar farm. It powers Urbana city building and helps low-income housing. The developer still needs to apply for those incentives before they can start construction.
