(Urbana-jm) – The Illinois State Police are investigating after an inmate died at the Champaign County Jail on Thursday. Sheriff Dustin Heuerman and State Police officials say that inmates at the jail alerted correctional officers around 11:30 a.m. that a female inmate in a different cell was possibly having a medical emergency. Officers and on-site medical staff found her on the floor and immediately began life-saving measures. The inmate was transported to Carle Hospital, but was pronounced dead at approximately 12:24 p.m. While the preliminary investigation showed that the inmate likely suffered a medical emergency, the Sheriff’s Office asked the Illinois State Police to oversee the investigation. The Champaign County Coroner’s Office is assisting in the investigation.

They’ve each been charged with multiple Class X felonies, including attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. The three are accused of shooting a couple in their seventies on September 8 in broad daylight. Officers learned the couple were pulling into a driveway near Heritage Drive and Clayton Boulevard when they were shot.
