(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Department on Aging is reminding that some seniors may need to do a little legwork in order to receive their property tax rebate. If you filed 2021 state income taxes, and claimed the property tax credit, you’re good to go so long as you meet the income guidelines. But if you weren’t required to file income taxes or haven’t done so yet, you will have to fill out a form in order to get your property tax rebate of up to $300 says Department on Aging Director Paula Basta…

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Department of Agriculture announced Monday the approval of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy and Conservation Planning Assistance grant agreement. The IDOA/NRCS partnership leverages $3.5 million Illinois state NLRS funds with $9.8 million of federal funds from the USDA/NRCS to deliver over $13.3 million in new funding to support conservation planning and NLRS staffing and programming. The project will allow the addition of up to 40 conservation planners across Illinois.

(Champaign-jm) – Champaign County Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s help in finding a burglary suspect who used a unique mask to hide his identity. Officials said the suspect wore a Ghostface mask from the Scream franchise while committing the burglary. During the overnight hours of September 17, the suspect broke into a restricted area of Midwest Underground Technology, Inc., located at 2626 Midwest Court in Champaign. Once inside, he cut the locks off several work trailers and stole tools and equipment stored inside. The suspect then used one of the company’s John Deere Gator carts to flee the scene. The total amount of the stolen equipment is estimated at $30,000.

(Vermilion County-jm) – A man was sentenced to 12 years in prison after he was caught delivering methamphetamine last year. Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said Jermaine McQueen was caught during an investigation by the Vermilion Metropolitan Enforcement Group in the summer of 2021. In August of that year, VMEG personnel pulled McQueen over and found over 20 grams of meth in his possession. He was in the process of delivering that meth to someone else when he was arrested.

 

(Springfield-jm) – Here’s the latest weekly crop report. There were nearly six days suitable for fieldwork this past week, helping harvest get underway. Crop Statistician Mark Schleusener says 81 percent of corn acres have reached the dent stage…

One percent of winter wheat has been planted and average statewide topsoil moisture came in at 11 percent very short, 10 percent short, 64 percent adequate and 15 percent surplus.

 

(Paxton–jc)  An on line police sting operation continues in one local police department. Paxton police continue to target child predators as the program has netted 11 arrests so far. (Springfield-jm) – The fall trout season opens next month in Illinois. Several bodies of water are stocked with over 80 thousand rainbow trout each spring and fall by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The fall season kicks off mid-October and Assistant Chief of Fisheries Kevin Irons says it’s a great opportunity for the whole family. Here’s the details…

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced reduced fees for account owners in a program that allows people with disabilities to save their own money for disability-related expenses. Annual account maintenance fees were lowered by approximately 25 percent for Illinois Achieving a Better Life Experience account owners who receive their statements electronically. Program management fees were also reduced an average of 6 percent. The lower fees are the result of a new contract between the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer and Ascensus College Savings, the program manager.

(Champaign-jm) – Firefighters from several towns in the Champaign-Urbana area were called to a house on Danbury Drive on Monday to battle a two-alarm fire. 

Champaign, Savoy and Bondville firefighters battling a fire that had large flames and heavy smoke coming from the roof of the home. The fire was eventually extinguished, revealing the garage roof had collapsed along with extensive damage to the side of the home’s second floor.

 

(Rantoul–jc) –  The Community Service Center based in Rantoul also serves as a food pantry Monday through Friday. Executive Director Cindy Crawford says the pantry is open to not only Rantoul residents but those living in Champaign County…

(Champaign-jm) – An Illinois lawmaker has filed legislation to clarify language in the SAFE-T Act. State Senator Scott Bennett of Champaign filed Senate Bill 4228, on Monday, which focuses on updating provisions in the SAFE-T Act by clarifying language to address concerns raised by local law enforcement officials. Sen. Bennett’s legislation states pretrial release will apply to individuals arrested on or after January 1, 2023. The measure also permits judges to deny pretrial release for any alleged crime if the person arrested poses a threat to the safety of any person or the community.
