Sunday kicked off National Farm Safety and Health Week

The medical director of a Chicago abortion care facility said ever since Roe was struck down, their phone hasn’t stopped ringing.

 

(Paxton-jm) – An iconic Paxton building will be rebuilt. Dr. Jeff Grove and his brother John announced during Paxton’s Swine n Dine Saturday they intend to rebuild the Paxton Majestic Theatre at the site of the former bowling alley. The theater burned down in 2007.

 

(Paxton-jm) – Paxton emergency crews responded to a pair of accidents over the weekend. The first one occurred late Friday afternoon on Route 45 at 200 north about a mile south of Paxton around 5:30 pm. Then around 10 pm, crews were called to a person struck by a vehicle while walking near the intersection of Patton and Taft. The road was closed for several hours while crews investigated.

 

(Urbana-jm) – A new free saliva-based COVID testing site is opening up in Urbana. Starting today, SHIELD Illinois will begin offering COVID-19 tests to the public at the University of Illinois’ Campus Recreation Center East. The free testing is made possible through federal funding from the CARESand American Rescue Plan Acts in partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health and SHIELD Illinois. Testing will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and parking is free at marked metered spaces along Dorner Drive. The public should enter the east entrance of the CRCE which faces Allen Hall.

(St. Joseph-jm) – A new business is coming to a long-standing building in downtown St. Joseph. The village board voted to approve the sale of the one-time village hall, village jail, and scout building. The winning bid came in at $10,000, just half the appraised value. The owner of Roch’s Place, bought the historic building.

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting strong demand for the new COVID-19 booster shot. There’s widespread availability of the booster which covers the original strain of the virus plus the Omicron variant. State Public Health Spokesperson Mike Claffey says they are encouraged that in just the first two weeks, over 188 thousand people have received the shot…

(Champaign-jm) – Champaign firefighters responded to a pair of fires over the weekend. First they responded to a building fire Friday afternoon. In a press release, officials said the fire was in the gas vault of EpiWorks at 1606 Rion Drive. The fire caused crews to evacuate a nearby hotel and school. Then Sunday morning crews responded to a vacant house fire at 1803 Scottsdale Drive. One firefighter was injured. That fire remains under investigation.

 

(Champaign-jm) – Champaign police are investigating a pair of weekend shootings. A teen was shot Friday evening walking near West Springfield Avenue and Kenwood Road. Champaign Police arrived and found a 16-year-old with several non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his legs. The teen was walking near Springfield Avenue when another male started following him, officials said. The shooter shot the teen and then ran away. Officials said the person who shot the teen also damaged a nearby building due to the shooting. Then around 7:15 Saturday evening police were called to 1300 block of Bloomington Road for a report of a car accident and shots fired. A short time later a 22 year old male showed up at the hospital with a non life threatening gunshot wound to his arm.

(Ogden-jm) – A ribbon cutting was held to open the next portion of the Kickapoo rail trail. The ribbon cutting was in Ogden and now expands from Ogden to Urbana. Once completed it will go all the way to Danville. Funding was supported by a $949,430 grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program and $118,678.75 in State of Illinois grant match.
