(Springfield-jm) – Republican Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey posted a video on his campaign Facebook page blaming incumbent Governor J.B. Pritzker for issues related to crime, education and taxes. Bailey said that if elected, he would undo the things Pritzker has done while he's been in office. Bailey said Pritzker and his team are partly to blame for rising violent crime in Chicago and elsewhere in the state. Pritzker says Bailey's conservative views are too extreme for Illinois.

(Champaign-jm) – The Champaign Police Department has made an arrest in a July 14, 2022, shooting death investigation, officially ruling it a Homicide. On July 14 Champaign Police responded to the 400 block of E. Beardsley Avenue for a report of a shooting with injury. Upon arrival, officers located 34-year-old Latoya Gwin of Champaign unresponsive with a life-threatening gunshot wound. She was transported to an area hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The initial investigation indicated that Ms. Gwin was a resident of the premises and was engaged in a domestic dispute with her father when a firearm was discharged, and she was struck. Yesterday, Raymond Gwin, Sr., 69, of Champaign was charged with four counts of Murder. Gwin remains in the custody of the Champaign County Correctional Center, awaiting trial.

 

(Champaign-jm) – One college in Central Illinois is working to re-vamp its curriculum, hoping to make it easier for students who may already have experience.  Parkland College in Champaign received a $4.99 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, and they’ll be spreading it to six other community colleges in the state.  Parkland will receive $1.7 million because they are the lead college managing and dispersing the funds. The rest of the grant will be distributed to Lincoln Land Community College, John Woods Community College, John A. Logan College, Shawnee Community College, Illinois Valley Community College and Rend Lake College. They’ll each receive about $500,000.

(Urbana-jm) – A Paris man will appear in court after University of Illinois Police officers said he pointed a toy gun at people on Saturday. Officials said an officer observed Curtis Holley, 58, driving on campus and pointing what appeared at the time to be an actual gun out the window. Holley complied with the officer’s commands to stop and release the gun and was then taken to Carle Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Once released from the hospital, Holley was issued a notice to appear in court for disorderly conduct.

(Springfield-jm) – Saying Illinoisans' safety will be at risk, an Illinois senator is calling for a full repeal of the Safety, Accountability and Fairness Equity Today Act, or SAFE-T Act. State Senator Don DeWitte of St. Charles, also is providing a petition online where Illinois residents can urge the repeal. Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the bill into law last year, which will abolish cash bail on January 1, making Illinois the first state in the country to do so. Pritzker has celebrated the legislation as one that supports police departments with funds and equipment such as body cameras, and that the elimination of cash bail will prevent low-level criminals from sitting in jail for months.

 

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging college students to consider fire safety while they’re away at school this year. This is Campus Fire Safety Month and Fire Marshal Spokesperson JC Fultz says the threat is real…

 

 

State Fire Marshal Spokesperson JC Fultz. Tips include coming up with an escape plan in case of fire and ensuring some detectors are working in off campus housing. Fultz also urges students not to overload electrical outlets and to follow dorm rules about what appliances are allowed.

 

(Champaign-jm) – A Champaign County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant graduated from a FBI program. According to a news release, Lt. David Sherrick graduated from the FBI National Academy on Tuesday. Sherrick is the second officer from Champaign County Sheriff’s Office to graduate from the academy. The first is Captain Shane Cook, who leads the Law Enforcement division, graduating in March 2017.

 

(Decatur-jm) – The civil trial between the family of Kelly Wilson and the Illinois State Police will be heard in the Illinois Court of Claims today. The lawsuit is asking for $10 million in damages in connection with the crash that resulted in the death of Kelly Wilson. On May 8th 2016, a Illinois State Police Sergeant Jeffery Denning was leaving Decatur to pursue Dracy "Clint" Pendleton. Pendleton was accused of shooting a Mahomet officer and police were on a manhunt in Illinois to find him. Denning was sentenced to 24 months of probation for his role in the crash.

(Undated-jm) – Four Illinois colleges have earned a spot on U.S. News and World Report’s latest ranking of the best colleges and universities in the nation. Two landed in the top ten, including the University of Chicago at No. 6, and Northwestern University at No. 10. The two other schools that made the ranking are the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana at No. 47, and the U of I Chicago, also known as UIC, at No. 97.
