Illinoisans will be able to sign up for permanent mail-in voting starting today

(Washington-jm) – Democratic Senator Dick Durbin is pointing to passage by the Senate of the Inflation Reduction Act as being historic. The measure passed on Sunday after two days of votes and procedural moves that finally resulted in a 50-50 tie. Vice President Harris cast the deciding yes vote. The bill is expected to pass later this week in the House and then sent to President Biden.

(Paxton-jm) – Paxton firefighters had a busy Tuesday. Crews were called to a single vehicle rollover accident with injury at 280 north 1500 east around 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. About 3:45 pm, crews were called to the Ford County courthouse after the elevator stopped working trapping two individuals.

 

(Gibson City-jm) – The Ford County Public Health Department will be hosting a clinic today to help vaccinate people against COVID-19. The clinic will take place at the Community Room of School House Apartments, located at 200 North Melvin Street in Gibson City. It will take place between 9 a.m. and noon and people should enter through the west doors. The community is welcome to attend and receive a shot. All vaccines and boosters will be available and walk-ins are welcome.

(Champaign-jm) – The City of Champaign will have contractors performing annual outdoor warning siren maintenance to each of the fifteen sirens in the City’s alerting system on August 11 and 12, 2022, from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Part of this maintenance requires that the contractor activate the warning sirens for short periods of time, not to exceed thirty seconds, to ensure proper performance during emergencies. Should an actual emergency exist, the warning sirens will activate as normal, for a period exceeding two minutes.

(Chicago-jm) – Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said they are sending welcoming signals to large corporations based in other states with restrictive abortion laws or bans. Pritzker, asked about Eli Lilly’s opposition to Indiana’s new abortion ban, confirmed he has reached out to the drug maker to tell them Illinois would welcome any expansion projects.

 

(Springfield-jm) – Several improvements are being made to the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The state is investing more than 58 million dollars to repair, upgrade and revamp areas around the fair. (Gibson City-jm) – Gibson City firefighters were called to a house fire Tuesday evening. Crews were called to the fire in the 200 block of South Sangamon around 6:30 pm. No word on the cause of the fire.

 

(Cullom-jm) – The triple murder trial for a Cullom man is underway. Clifford Brewer is charged with 6 counts of murder in the shooting deaths of his wife, son and a neighbor on Christmas Day 2019. Jurors have been selected and opening statements and testimony is expected to begin today.

 

(Springfield-jm) – The general election is about four months away. When voters head to the polls in November, they will be voting for elected officials from the Governor down to local races. (Champaign-jm) – The 2022 Art and Design Faculty Exhibition at Giertz Gallery at Parkland College opens Monday, August 22.  The annual showcase, featuring the work of Parkland's faculty artists, includes painting, drawing, video, photography, metals, ceramics, and graphic design, will run through September 24. Exhibiting faculty members include Shawn Fairchild, Beverly Kudeki, Melinda McIntosh, Laura O'Donnell, Denise Seif, Peg Shaw, Joan Stolz, Matthew Watt, Kelly White, and Liza Wynette.
