(Springfield-jm) – Voter turnout was low for the June primary election. Illinois State Board of Elections Spokesperson Matt Dietrich says less than 22 percent of registered voters cast a ballot back in June…

 

 

State Board of Elections Spokesperson Matt Dietrich. Nearly 52 percent of those voting were Democrats and 46 percent were Republicans. 5 Illinois counties offered Libertarian ballots for certain offices. Dietrich says about 16 percent of voters opted for mail-in ballots.

 

(Springfield-jm) – Both Republican candidate for Governor Darren Bailey and Republican candidate for Attorney General Tom DeVore were endorsed Monday morning by the Illinois and Chicago Fraternal Order of Police. Police union presidents endorsed the candidates for their tough-on-crime positions.

State Crop Statistician Mark Schleusener. 90 percent of soybeans are blooming and 61 percent are setting pods. 70 percent of the crop is rated in good to excellent condition. The third cutting of alfalfa is now 32 percent complete. Average statewide topsoil moisture is 8 percent very short, 16 percent short, 58 percent adequate and 18 percent surplus.

 

(Champaign-jm) – Officers with the University of Illinois Police Department arrested a man on Saturday after they found a loaded gun in his possession during a traffic stop. The traffic stop started at 4:21 a.m. when a UIPD officer observed a car driving 20 miles over the speed limit. After pulling the car over, the officer saw an open container of alcohol on the floor and a burnt marijuana cigar in the center console. Seeing this, the officer asked the three occupants to get out of the car so it could be searched. The gun was found underneath the passenger seat and the person sitting in that seat was 18-year-old Tramon Roper of Champaign. He was arrested on an aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charge and was taken to the Champaign County Jail. He has since been released.

(Champaign-jm) – The Champaign County Coroner’s Office released the name of a man they said was hit by a vehicle over the weekend. In a news release, Coroner Duane Northrup said this happened Sunday night at Mattis Avenue and John Street in Champaign. He stated 28-year-old Bryson O. Walker was pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday afternoon. This incident is under investigation by the coroner’s office as well as the Champaign Police Department.

(Springfield-jm) – It was another record year for Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs; I-Cash program. During the last fiscal year, I-Cash returned a record 280 million dollars in unclaimed property to taxpayers. This includes forgotten bank accounts, old life insurance policies and the like. Treasurer Frerichs credits outreach efforts and simplifying the claims process…

(Chicago–jc)--. A report by Fitch Ratings says Illinois’ budget is improving but an economic slowdown and inflation could pose a risk.  The report found that state budgets across the U.S. are in a much better position coming into fiscal 2023 and are structured to combat inflationary and macro pressures over the next several months.The enacted budgets consider potential economic and geopolitical headwinds. After historically strong U.S. GDP growth of 5.7% in 2021, Fitch expects growth to slow sharply in 2022 to 2.9% and then further to 1.5% in 2023, due to rapidly rising interest rates. GDP in the first two quarters of 2022 showed negative growth.

State Crop Statistician Mark Schleusener. 96 percent of corn is silking, 55 percent is in the dough stage and 5 percent is in the dent stage. 65 percent of the corn crop is rated in good to excellent condition. Pasture conditions also improved to 54 percent in good to excellent shape.

(Urbana-jm) – An Urbana man has been acquitted of sexually assaulting a child. It took jurors more than 12 hours to return not guilty verdicts against John Lenoir. He had been charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and faced up to 120 years in prison. Prosecutors say the alleged incident took place over two years ago and the mother of the alleged victim had been in a relationship with Lenoir’s brother, both of whom she claimed were alcoholics and wanted to limit visitations with him.
