(Champaign-jm) – A man was arrested for sexual assault of a minor. Police say Matthew Morgan sexually assaulted a minor in Champaign. Officers from the Champaign Police Department were referred to the case from the Piatt County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Monticello Police Department. Police said, following an investigation Morgan was arrested on the charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a minor. They state the crime appears to have occurred in Champaign.

 

(Urbana-jm) – Staff shortages are causing more problems in Champaign County. Minors at the juvenile detention center are being sent to other facilities across the state. They’re being moved to Vernon Hills, Joliet, and Normal detention centers. Eleven detainees were moved last week. Four more are expected to be transferred this week.

 

(Champaign County-jm) – Isabella Smith has been named the 2022 Miss Champaign County Fair Queen. The pageant was held last night. Addison Coffey was named Little Miss. The 2022 Champaign County Fair gets underway this Friday and runs through July 30th at the fairgrounds in Urbana.

 

(Rantoul-tr) – Golf Carts and other UTV’s may be taking to the streets of Rantoul. A new code is being looked at to allow these types of vehicles on city streets. However, Rantoul Mayor Chuck Smith clarifies that these types of vehicles will not be allowed on highways…

(Urbana-jm) – Construction crews will be closing down one block of Lincoln Avenue in Urbana this week in order to repair a bridge carrying the road over Boneyard Creek. This project is expected to last almost a month. The closure will be between Springfield Avenue and Green Street and it will start today. Access will be maintained to properties on that block, but through traffic will not be allowed. There will be a marked detour leading traffic onto Springfield and Green to use Goodwin Avenue for passage around the closure. Repairs are expected to be complete by Friday, August 12.

 

(Mahomet-jm) – A golf course in Mahomet is replacing its gas-powered golf carts with new ones powered by Lithium-ion batteries. Lake of the Woods Golf Course is leasing 60 carts from Battery Specialists + Golf Carts in Champaign to replace its current fleet. The course said the old carts were past their normal useful life while the new ones have better technology and life and are simpler to maintain.

(Springfield-jm) – New legislation would make parents who sign off on their child’s FOID card criminally liable for any related damages. The bill comes from Representative Mark Batinick of Plainfield who says since parents have to sponsor the FOID application if their child is under 21, they should be held responsible if that kid causes harm with a firearm…

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging families to make sure their kids are safe around water. Whether it’s a baby pool, big pool or lake, water can be dangerous for children. That’s why they should never be left unattended, says Fire Marshal Spokesperson JC Fultz.

Other tips include emptying inflatable pools when done using them for the day and teaching children to stay away from pool drains and pipes.

 

(Urbana-jm) – One person is dead and a suspect is in custody following a shooting on the U of I campus Friday night. Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup says 46 year old Joshua Berg of Urbana died at Carle Foundation Hospital. An autopsy is scheduled for today. Police arrested 42 year old Matthew Denbo. Authorities believe an argument broke out between the two when Denbo shot Berg.

 

(Champaign County-jm) – The Illinois Department of Transportation will begin resurfacing work on interstate 57 starting today. The work area will be 7 miles from Thomasboro to Rantoul in both directions, including the south ramps at exit 250 for Rantoul. One lane will be open in each direction. Later this summer IDOT will be resurfacing I-57 from Rantoul to the Ford County line, including north ramps for Rantoul.

(Paxton-jm) – The Paxton city property committee will meet later this month. The committee will discuss some form of recognition for former Mayor Jim Kingston who died earlier this year. The committee meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 26th at 7:15.

 

(Champaign-jm) – The “With Illinois” fundraising campaign officially ended June 30 and concluded with a $200,000 personal contribution from Chancellor Robert J. Jones and his wife, Dr. Lynn Hassan Jones. The “With Illinois” campaign was the most ambitious and successful fundraising campaign in university history, reaching the initial $2.25 billion goal 15 months ahead of schedule.
