(Champaign-jm) – A Champaign-Urbana community group, Party for Socialism and Liberation, was one of many organizations nationwide speaking out against Friday’s Supreme Court ruling to Roe v Wade. The group held a protest at the Champaign County House to express their disapproval given that people they know needed to get an abortion in the past.

 

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Emergency Management Agency says when thunder roars, go indoors, since that usually means lightning is close behind. But if you’re stuck outside, spokesperson Kevin Sur has this advice…

 

 

IEMA Spokesperson Kevin Sur. IEMA says even indoors you need to be careful when it’s lightning. That means avoiding anything connected to electricity, landline phones and plumbing. Sur says you should also stay off your balcony or porch and don’t lie on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls.

 

(Undated-jm) – 67 Illinois counties are now at medium to high risk of COVID transmission. Champaign and Ford Counties are at high risk while Iroquois and Vermilion are at medium. 

 

(Kankakee County-jm) – A 31-year-old man from Champaign is recovering after he was involved in a crash that killed another man. The crash happened early Sunday morning on northbound Interstate 57 at milepost 304, just north of Chebanse. State Troopers said the man was a passenger in a sedan that, for unknown reasons, drove onto the shoulder of the road, hit a construction sign, rolled into the ditch and caught fire. The driver of the sedan, a 27-year-old man from Chicago, was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Champaign man and another passenger, also 27 years of age and from Chicago, were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

(Gilman-jm) – Iroquois County Clerk Breein Suver has announced a temporary change for Douglas 1 Precinct registered voters to cast their vote on Election Day. The change of this polling place will be effective for the June 28, 2022 Primary Election. Due to the construction on Central St in Gilman, City Hall will not be accessible to voters on Election Day. All voters who voted at the Gilman City Hall will vote at the Gilman United Methodist Church in the Fellowship Hall. Voters should access the Methodist Church from the 2nd Street entrance of the church.

(Washington-jm) – While much of the nation focused on the overturning of Roe versus Wade on Friday, a separate Supreme Court decision is also leading to controversy about gun rights. The ruling is striking down a New York law. It required people to show a specific need to get a license to carry a gun in a concealed way out in public. That ruling won’t affect Illinois’ concealed carry law. This new decision is coming as Congress just gave final approval on Friday on a bipartisan bill that's aimed at combating gun violence. That new legislation is set to enhance background checks and make it a requirement for authorities to look at mental health records for those wanting to buy a gun.

 

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Student Assistance Commission is highlighting a big increase in college map grant funding that will help as many as 155 thousand students. 601 million dollars in grants will be available in the new fiscal year that starts next month. ISAC Spokesperson Lynne Baker says that means more students will be able to receive the valuable financial lifeline to college…

(Champaign-jm) – Two streets in Champaign will be reduced to one lane each this week as crews install fiber optic infrastructure. This work will take place near the intersection of Mattis Avenue and Windsor Road starting Monday. Northbound Mattis will be reduced to one lane of traffic between Windsor and Harbor Point Drive and westbound Windsor will be reduced to one lane between Mattis and Carlisle Drive. These closures will end on Friday.

 

(St. Joseph-tr) – The Village of St. Joseph is currently in the process of having a few of their downtown locations appraised. Village Administrator Joe Hackney says the goal is to help bring in the private sector…

(Urbana-jm) – Shield CU, a partnership between OSF HealthCare and the University of Illinois, is working to keep Illinois communities safe from COVID-19 through the quick and free administering of tens of thousands of saliva tests. The university developed the saliva COVID test before the start of the fall 2020 semester. The Shield CU partnership was unveiled in March of 2021. Nearly 80 thousand tests have been administered since the program began.
