(Undated-jm) – The latest drought monitor came out Thursday and it shows conditions worsening around the area. All of the WPXN listening area is in abnormally dry conditions with southern Iroquois County, most of Vermilion County, all but the northwestern part of Champaign County and the southeastern part of Ford County are in moderate drought. The latest forecast continues to show warm temperatures and below normal precipitation.

 

(Springfield-jm) – The West Nile Virus has been reported in seven Illinois counties so far, and the State Department of Public Health is urging people to “Fight the Bite.'' 15 mosquito batches in DuPage, Cook, Will, Logan, Edgar, Macoupin and Washington Counties have tested positive for the virus. No human cases yet. Still, Public Health spokesperson Mike Claffey says you should be careful. …

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois drivers will soon have more professional sports teams to choose from if they want team license plates for their cars. Governor Pritzker signed into law on Thursday a bill that adds the Chicago Fire, Red Stars and Sky to the list of options Illinoisans can choose from for their license plates. These three teams will join the Chicago Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs and White Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals as options effective January 1, 2023.

(Philo-jm) – A man from Philo has been arrested after University of Illinois Police detectives said he uploaded 30 illicit videos, many of which depicted child pornography, to Snapchat. The chain of events that led to this arrest started in April when Snapchat sent a tip to the Illinois Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that someone had uploaded a pornographic video to the app. Detectives learned the account used in this crime is owned by 22-year-old Cecil Kimble. When Police obtained a search warrant for his account, they found 28 files of apparent child pornography. They also found two non-pornographic videos of young women checking out at the register of the Philo convenience store where Kimble works

 

(Undated-jm) – A pair of COVID-19 testing sites will be closing down at the end of this month. SHIELD CU has been providing saliva-based COVID-19 testing at Danville Area Community College and Parkland College in Champaign, but those testing centers are closing on June 24 and 30, respectively. They are closing because state funding is coming to an end.

 

(Champaign-jm) – The Parkland College Foundation will be creating a new scholarship fund thanks to a generous donation from the Royal American Legion and Sons of the American Legion Post 996 in Royal, Illinois. The $10,000 endowment, presented to the Foundation on June 21, will establish the Royal American Legion Post 996 Scholarship for veterans or veterans' dependents.  The Parkland College Foundation also received a generous $20,000 endowment for a new scholarship fund. The gift from the I & I Antique Tractor & Gas Engine Club will provide scholarships for Parkland students in the Agriculture, Diesel Power, and Case New Holland Service Technician programs.

(Undated-jm) – The latest Drought Monitor came out this Thursday morning, and as expected, we have seen a spreading and intensification of dry conditions across Central Illinois. Due to temperatures in the 80s, 90s, and even 100’s with sunny skies, we have entered what is called a Flash Drought. Like a Flash Flood, a Flash Drought is an extremely fast onset of dry conditions. (Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is providing more financial support to foster families. The state had already planned a three percent cost of living increase, but now will add another boost to help foster parents, caregivers and older youth in care. It’s vital to support the generous people who open their homes, says DCFS Spokesperson Bill McCaffrey…

(Chicago-jm) – Citadel, an investment company, announced Thursday morning it's moving the company's global headquarters to Miami, Florida. The company is run by billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin. The Chicago location employs about a thousand. Citadel has been in Chicago for more than 30 years. Citadel is the third major company to announce plans to move. Boeing and Caterpillar announced within the past two months they are moving global headquarters out of Illinois.

(Champaign-jm) – Champaign County needs judges for the upcoming election. County Clerk Aaron Ammons office says they would like to get 150 judges. If there are not enough workers, polling locations could be impacted.

 

(Paxton-jm) – The First Lutheran Church in Paxton will be hosting a blood drive later this month. The blood drive will take place on Monday from 2:30-6 pm. Coordinator Kevin Hanson says there is always a shortage of blood donation in the summer…

(Mahomet-jm) – Officials with the Sangamon Valley Public Water District in Mahomet issued a warning asking people to restrict their water usage. In a news release Thursday, officials stated their facilities had power outages because of a power spike issue from Ameren Illinois. A large power surge caused two of their three wells to experience catastrophic failures and they are now only able to pump water from the one well. Repairs will not be able to complete repairs before Monday. Water is not to be used from the water system to water yards, gardens and other open spaces. It should also not be used for the initial fillings of swimming pools or to wash buildings and motor vehicles.

 

(Paxton-jm) – Ford County Clerk Amy Frederick is reminding voters Tuesday is the state’s primary election. Her office will be open this Saturday for early voting from 8:30 to noon.

The Rankin Lions Club 23rd annual truck and tractor pull will take place tonight at 6 pm.

 

Roberts will hold their 150th Celebration on Saturday with a flea market at 8 am, kids games from 10-1, beard and baking contest at 11, parade at 1, car cruise in at 1:30, corn hole tournament at 2, food vendors downtown at 4 and live music at 8.

 

Paxton IGA will hold their cookout benefiting the Paxton Evangelical Covenant Church on Saturday from 10-2.

 

The Merrell Ride for PTSD will take place on Saturday starting at the Westville American Legion at 11 am.
