The Illinois State Board of Education is voting to require most kids to return to the classroom in the fall

(Springfield-jm) -- Despite what Fitch Ratings says are notable improvements over the month, Illinois is one of only seven states that remain below 50% jobs recovered from the pandemic. The credit rating agency, which has the state’s rating a notch above speculative grade, or junk bond status, notes the other states have recovered more than half the jobs they lost at the peak of the pandemic.

(Undated-jm) -- The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 1,633 new Coronavirus cases and 28 deaths Wednesday bringing the state’s total number of cases to 1,370,342 and deaths to 22,492. Locally Iroquois County reported 6 new cases bringing their total to 3,057, Champaign County 30 new cases bringing their total to 20,762 , Ford County 12 new cases and 1 additional death bringing their total number of cases to 1,801 and deaths to 46. Vermilion County did not have a report.

(Champaign County-jm) -- Over $40 million has been allocated to Champaign County from the American Rescue Plan. The finance committee of Champaign County is hosting a study session to allow public input on how the county can use this money. The meeting will be held virtually on Zoom on Tuesday, May 25, at 6 p.m.

Illinois Schools Superintendent Carmen Ayala. The only exception will be students who are unable to receive the vaccine and are also under public health quarantine orders. The resolution does not include a vaccine mandate.

 

 

(Springfield-jm) -- Illinois expects to get more than $13 billion from the federal government to be split between the state and local governments. President Joe Biden announced the U.S. Treasury is sending out $350 billion to state and local governments as part of the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief measure enacted earlier this year. Illinois state government is in line for $7.5 billion. Local governments will share $5.7 billion.

Reditus Labs in Pekin announced they have identified the Indian double mutant variant known as B-1-617 in a sample collected in the Bloomington-Normal area. The variant contains 13 mutations and is believed to be more contagious.

(St. Louis-jm) -- Starting this weekend, some visitors to Six Flags St. Louis won’t be required to wear a mask. The theme park announced those fully vaccinated can leave their masks at home. Temperature checks and advanced reservations will also not be required.

(Urbana-jm) -- Avijit Ghosh, vice president, chief financial officer and comptroller of the University of Illinois system since 2018, has been named interim executive vice president and vice president of academic affairs. Ghosh will serve until a national search is complete to find the replacement for Barb Wilson, who left to become president at the University of Iowa.
