After a fairly dry August, half of the state is experiencing drought or near drought conditions

(Undated-jm) -- Among Illinois residents, active military personnel make up 164 out of every 100,000 people – the 32nd highest share among the 50 states, according to a new analysis by the website 24/7 Wall St. Illinois contains 27 military bases, with per-capita defense spending in the state estimated at $600. 24/7 Wall St.’s analysis is based on March 31 numbers compiled by the Defense Manpower Data Center.

 

(Undated-jm) -- Illinois wine drinkers pay the equivalent of $1.39 per gallon in state wine excise taxes, according to a new analysis from the Tax Foundation based on January 2020 data. The wine excise tax in Illinois was 13th highest among the 50 states, the Tax Foundation study found.

 

(Rantoul--jc)  --  Rantoul firefighters were called to a mobile home fire just after 3 this morning. The fire occurred at a mobile home in the 12 hundred block of Wedgewood Drive. No One was hurt in the blaze. Rantoul fire department officials continue to look to the cause of the fire. 

 

 

(Springfield-jm) -- Illinois now has more than 250,000 Coronavirus cases. The state reported 1,381 new cases and 8 additional deaths Monday bringing the state’s total number of cases to 250,961 and total deaths to 8,179. The seven day positivity rate stands at 4.2 percent.

 

 

(Springfield-jm) -- After a fairly dry August, half of the state is experiencing drought or near drought conditions. Although last month included a little bit of everything including high temps, low temps and a derecho, it ended up cooler than normal and the 15th driest August on record in Illinois, leaving the top half of the state either abnormally dry or in a moderate drought. State Climatologist Trent Ford says that probably isn’t changing anytime soon…

(Rantoul-jm) -- The Rantoul City School District announced yesterday a temporary employee has tested positive for the Coronavirus. The district says no students were in close contact to the individual however, six employees were and have been quarantined.

 

 

(Paxton-jm) -- Paxton will have fall townwide garage sales. The Paxton Area Chamber of Commerce announced fall garage sales will take place October 9th and 10th.

(Undated-jm) -- Rantoul and Paxton city councils meet tonight for their September meetings. The Rantoul Village Board will meet at 6pm where they are expected to approve the purchase of a vacuum excavator and award a contract for the construction of a new salt shed. The Paxton City Council meets tonight at 7pm where they will discuss sidewalk and curb repairs, consider ordinances addressing cats at large and underground electric fences, advertise bids for repainting the clock tower and go into executive session to consider the sale of city property. The Rantoul village board meeting gets underway at 6 with the Paxton city council meeting getting underway at 7.

(Danville-jm) -- Danville Area Community College is hosting a drive thru job fair this week. The job fair will take place on Wednesday, September 9 from 9 to 11 am.

 

 

(Normal-jm) -- Illinois State University in Normal is announcing strong fall enrollment numbers. Total enrollment for the fall semester is at 20,720. 3,353 are freshmen.

(Undated-jm) -- Illinois is among the most lazy states in the nation, according to consumer finance website WalletHub. The list of Hardest-Working States in America put Illinois at No. 40, based on a variety of factors like unemployment, hours worked and number of jobs an individual works. For the metric of volunteer hours worked, WalletHub ranked Illinois No. 48.

 

 

(Springfield-jm) --  Illinoisans who shifted to telecommuting have reclaimed nearly five hours of their lives each week.  About 1 in 4 employed people teleworked or worked from home for pay because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics data from July. That’s a decline from May, when nearly one-third of the workforce was working from home, not counting those who already were. CoPilot, a car shopping app, analyzed pre-pandemic commuter data from the U.S. Census and found Illinoisans spent an average of 4.9 hours commuting to and from work every week, working more than 43 hours.

Brandon Olson was awarded the Gibson Area Hospital and Health Services Gift Shop Scholarship. Summer Roesch was awarded the Arthur and Ann Jensen Noland Scholarship. Lauren Leonard was awarded the William and Viola Garrett Scholarship.

The Vermilion County Board will discuss their fiscal year budget, consider surplusing some vehicles and make several appointments for various boards. St. Joseph village leaders will hear an update on sewer repairs, 1st Street project and the Linden Street retention pond. The Vermilion County Board gets underway at 6pm and the St. Joseph Village Board gets underway at 7.
