The first signs of West Nile Virus are popping up in Illinois

(Springfield-jm) -- The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services says more foster homes are needed across Illinois. Foster homes are especially groups such as adolescents, children with special medical needs, sibling groups, african-american and latino youth, teenage mothers and their babies and LGBT youth. As of June, there are more than 18,000 youth living in foster care in Illinois: 6,200 are living with foster families, 10,500 with relatives and 1,300 in group homes and institutions.

 

 

(Springfield-jm) -- As if you didn’t have enough to worry about, the first signs of West Nile Virus are popping up in Illinois. So far, two batches of mosquitoes in Cook County have tested positive for the virus. State Public Health Director Dr Ngozi Ezike says it’s that time of year…

 

Illinois Public Health Director Dr Ngozi Ezike. Four out of five people infected with West Nile won’t have any symptoms, but the virus can be serious for those over 60. Symptoms of West Nile include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches.Ezike says last year was quiet in Illinois, with only 28 confirmed cases, including one death.

 

 

(Undated-jm) -- Champaign County reported 2 new cases of Coronavirus Wednesday bringing their total number to 703. Kankakee County reported 3 new cases bringing their total number to 1,220. Ford, Iroquois, Vermilion, Livingston and McLean Counties all reported no new cases. Champaign and Kankakee Counties both reported 1 additional death each bringing their total number of deaths to 9 and 60 respectively.

The state VFW convention was supposed to take place next week, however, the Coronavirus pandemic has put the convention on hold. (Urbana-jm) -- The Executive Committee at the University of Illinois approved a plan allowing high school students to apply for undergraduate programs at two of their schools without taking a standardized test. Officials said this would apply for students applying for fall 2021 at the University of Illinois at Chicago and UIS. The universities requested the change because “large numbers of high school students have not been able to take standardized tests due to school closures and state-level restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.” They said SAT and ACT test administrations had been canceled since March. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is in the process of discussing this matter with their Senate.

(Gibson City-jm) -- The Gibson City city council will meet tonight at 7 where they are expected to approve a pair of agreements for the water tower project and approve sidewalk cafe permits for restaurants.

 

(Paxton-jm) -- A Paxton bank has made a donation to a local food pantry. Farmers Merchants Bank of Illinois donated $10,000 to the Hands of Christ Food Pantry. The donation was sourced through a COVID-19 Relief Program Grant.

 

 

(Urbana-jm) -- A delay in processing property taxes at the Champaign County Treasurer’s office is leading to some issues. The first installment of property taxes were due June 1st. The treasurer’s office is running behind on processing some payments, causing the system to assess late penalties on some who may have paid on time. The treasurer’s office says those who were assessed late fees even though they paid on time will see the late fee removed from their account.

 

(Springfield-jm) -- The Illinois Department of Corrections was sanctioned after it failed to abide by the terms of a settlement on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing prisoners. It was part of a class-action lawsuit brought by those prisoners who say IDOC didn't provide the assistance they needed to effectively communicate. 

 

 

(Springfield-jm) -- Governor J-B Pritzker is announcing a 270 million dollar grant program for child care providers in Illinois. The state previously awarded one time stipends to providers caring for the children of front line workers, but Governor Pritzker says more must be done. He says this new program makes Illinois the first state in the country to help restore child care through the pandemic…

(Undated-jm) -- Ford County is reporting 20 COVID-19 patients have been released from isolation with 1 in isolation. In Vermilion County, 34 have been released from isolation, 8 are active with 5 in isolation and 3 hospitalized. In Champaign County, 637 have recovered, 37 are active with 11 hospitalized. In Iroquois County, 108 have recovered, 21 are in isolation and 2 are hospitalized. In McLean County, 205 have recovered, and 14 are in isolation. In Livingston County, 34 have been released from isolation and 1 is active. In Kankakee County, 661 have recovered, 499 are active with 7 hospitalized.

(Urbana-jm) -- A Rantoul man faces multiple charges for an incident over the weekend. 24 year old Troy Stewart was charged with mob action, criminal damage to property and aggravated domestic battery. Rantoul police say Stewart allegedly broke out several windows at an apartment building and a car on Harmon Drive. Bond was set at $10,000.

(Fisher-jm) -- The Fisher Village Board could make a decision about the village’s 4th of July at tonight’s village board meeting scheduled for 6pm. Village board members will also discuss reopening city parks, consider approving $35,000 for oil and chip seal coating and discuss potential storm water drainage projects.

 

 

(Urbana-jm) -- The University of Illinois will make a decision on what the fall semester will look like within the next two weeks. Chancellor Robert Jones said he will make a decision with the provost after reviewing a report from the COVID-19 academic affairs committee. A draft of the report recommended ending in-person learning at Thanksgiving break. The last eight days of teaching and exams would happen online in an effort to reduce travel back and forth to campus. If the state is in Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan, classes with more than 50 students would be held online for the entire semester.
