Riots broke out in Champaign Sunday causing businesses to close and messes to be cleaned up

(Champaign-jm) -- Riots broke out in Champaign Sunday causing businesses to close and lots to clean up. The riots happened at Marketplace Mall and several businesses on North Prospect. Store windows were broken and roads blocked. Champaign Police said they did make some arrests. Towns and businesses up and down Interstate 57 were notified of potential unrest and demonstrations. Wal Mart in Rantoul was closed early,  several businesses in Paxton boarded up their windows and closed early due to the threat.  Rantoul police were also on alert on Sunday and local leaders told residents to stay home. The same message was given to local residents in Iroquois County. Watseka, Gilman to Iroquois County Sheriff's police were on alert for any incidents. Local officials are also looking into a fire near the Paxton City Building that happened last night. Firefighters from Paxton Loda and Buckley assisted with the fire.

(Undated-jm) -- As most schools across Illinois end two months of distant learning for summer break, parents still don’t have clear answers if their school-aged children will be returning to campuses in the fall. But parents may want to start planning to have to pick up some of the cost for personal protective equipment. Governor J-B Pritzker said last week he wasn’t sure what would happen with schools in the fall. Just in case there is some form of in-person instruction this fall in Illinois public schools, the Illinois Association of School Administrators is suggesting school districts start seeking out allotments of personal protective equipment.

 

 

(Paxton--jc)  Two area businesses are set to start a local shop program later today.  Frederick Community Bank President Justin Swan along with representatives from Hudson Drug and Hallmark will be presenting the Paxton  Area Chamber of Commerce, start up money for a Eat Drink Shop Local program in the city. Each business has pledged 10 thousand dollars each for the program. A ceremony is set for 2pm today at the Paxton Area Chamber of Commerce office in downtown Paxton. 

 

 

(Springfield-jm) -- The Illinois Department of Public Health is underscoring the importance of contact tracing and warning about potential scams. State Public Health Director Dr Ngozi Ezike says contact tracing is ramping up…

Friday was the last day Governor Pritzker and IDPH held their daily COVID-19 briefing. IDPH did say they will continue to release daily COVID-19 numbers.

 

 

(Iroquois County-jm) -- A Milford man has been arrested on first degree murder charges in the death of a Martinton woman in December 2019. Iroquois County Sheriff Derek Hagen says 47 year old Jason Fancher was charged in connection to the death of 54 year old Pam Williams. Williams’ body was found in a ditch in rural Sheldon December 13th. The next day the body of 50 year old Brian Musk of Milford was found in his apartment in Milford. Matthew Borden of Melvin was wanted for both murders and died following a chase and shootout in Colorado on December 15th. Fancher is only charged with Williams death and is in the Iroquois County Jail on one million bond.

(Urbana-jm) -- All Champaign County facilities except for two will reopen today. The treasurer and county clerk's office will remain closed until the middle of June. Those coming to the county’s facilities are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing, the number of visitors in a room will be limited and public spaces will be frequently cleaned and sanitized.

(Paxton-jm) -- The PBL Junior High and High School parking lots will be repaved this summer. The Paxton Buckley Loda School Board approved the bid from Iroquois Paving for just over $63,000 at their May meeting.

 

(Rantoul-jm) -- The village of Rantoul took precautions after riots broke out in Champaign Sunday. Major retail stores like Walmart and Rural King closed early and police blocked the entrances. Paxton businesses also took precautions. Casey’s, Pueblo Lindo and IGA all closed early. One person was seen placing decals on stop signs and yield signs  in Paxton Sunday night. The message was a four letter expletive about police and racists threatening no peace. Kankakee police reported several indenents  of property damage on Sunday  A curfew was lifted at 6 this morning in Champaign and Urbana.

(Springfield-jm) -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois is suing a facial recognition aggregator capable of scraping billions of publicly available faces and matching them to search queries from law enforcement.  The lawsuit the ACLU filed in Cook County Court last week alleges Clearview AI secretly takes the visual data of subjects from places like Facebook, Twitter and other online sources that give a clear vision of a subject’s face, then makes the data available to law enforcement to reference, a violation of Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act.

(Danville-jm) -- A former Gilman man will spend the next 14 years in prison on weapons charges. Chase Miles pleaded guilty in Vermilion County court to unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Miles was arrested in May of last year in Hoopeston. While officers tried to arrest Miles he resisted and a loaded handgun was found on him. Police say he also threatened the officers.

(Danville-jm) -- The Vermilion County courthouse will reopen today with limited services. All operations except jury trials resume. Grand jury proceedings will begin July 2nd. Civil and criminal jury trials are expected to begin July 6th.

(Champaign-jm) -- The Champaign County COVID-19 relief fund has received their 2nd $250,000 grant. $43,000 will be distributed to support 7 regional food pantries, $104,000 will go to 6 organizations to help with general assistance. $103,000 will go to 4 organizations to help with emergency shelter and mortgage assistance.
