Cases of COVID-19 now total more than 48 thousand in 96 Illinois counties.

State Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. Cases of COVID-19 now total more than 48 thousand in 96 Illinois counties. Locally, Ford County is reporting one additional case bringing the total to 9. Champaign County is reporting five new cases bringing their total to 114. Iroquois County is reporting four new cases bringing their total to 24. McLean County is reporting two new cases bringing their total number to 94. Vermilion County is reporting one new case bringing their total number to 18. They are also announcing their first death, a resident in his 70’s. Livingston County reported no new cases. Their total remains at 20 cases. (Cullom-jm) -- An area ag teacher is being honored as one of five finalists for Ag Educator of the Year. Tri-Point High School FFA Advisor Diana Loschen was selected as a finalist for the Golden Owl Award by Nationwide Insurance. Loschen will receive a plaque and $500. The winner of the Golden Owl Award will receive $3,000 from Nationwide Insurance towards their schools ag program.

 

 

(Gibson City-jm) -- Gibson City is opening the South Park campground. The campground will open May 1st but to Gibson City residents only. Those with addresses outside of Gibson City will have to wait until after the COVID-19 pandemic is over. The city reminds the restrooms and showers will remain closed. A lockbox will be installed. Residents will be asked to fill out a sheet of paper with their name, address, phone number and license plate info. The cost is $10 per day.

 

(Rantoul-jm) -- Rantoul village leaders are watching their budget due to the Coronavirus. The economic impact to the village isn’t known yet but Village Administrator Scott Eisenhower says they have made some cutbacks…

(Springfield-jm) -- A local state senator is co-sponsoring legislation to limit lengthy emergency declarations without legislative input. 53rd District State Senator Jason Barickman is co-sponsoring the legislation. The legislation would allow the governor to issue the declaration for 30 days but would require legislative approval for extensions. If the General Assembly is unable to meet due to health/safety concerns, the Senate President, House Speaker and the House and Senate Minority Leaders would have to submit written certification that the legislature is unable to meet.

While the number of cases locally rose yesterday, so has the number of recoveries. Ford County is reporting seven have been released from isolation while one is still in isolation. Champaign County is reporting 86 have recovered, 22 are active and 6 are hospitalized. Iroquois County is reporting 11 have recovered. Livingston County is reporting 16 have been released from isolation. McLean County is reporting  80 have recovered, one is hospitalized and 10 are on home isolation. (Urbana-jm) -- OSF HealthCare Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana and OSF HealthCare Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville are now requiring anyone entering the facilities to wear a mask. Those younger than 2 years old or those with medical conditions that would prohibit wearing a mask will be excused. If a personal mask is not available, a disposable mask will be provided.

(Urbana-jm) -- The University of Illinois is preparing for students to return to campus in the fall. In a mass email sent out Tuesday, University President Tim Killeen announced he is creating a task force to study how the university could prepare for classes in the fall with class sizes and dorms.

 

(Springfield-jm) -- Illinois House Republicans are asking for more transparency when it comes to how state prisons are handling the threat of COVID-19. Representative Avery Bourne of Morrisonville and some of her colleagues say they want more information about why certain inmates have been released and if victims have been notified…

(Normal--jc)  --  A plan between Normal based Rivian and the Ford Motor Company  to build a Lincoln-branded electric vehicle in Normal has been canceled as the auto industry struggles to navigate the current pandemic. While there were never specific details about the product, where it would be built or timing for its launch, the automakers planned to build the new vehicle using startup electric truck manufacturer Rivian’s platform. The two companies are expected to re address the project in the near future.
