A new survey finds most COVID-19 patients in Illinois are recovering

(Springfield-jm) -- Hospital occupancy rates have fluctuated in recent weeks, but the trend is giving some a bit of cautious optimism as Illinois works to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Governor J.B. Pritzker on Tuesday said the state’s doubling rate of COVID-19 cases, or the number of days it takes for the state’s number of positive cases, hospitalizations and deaths to double has increased, and that’s a good thing. The governor’s office said the case doubling rate on March 22 was just over 2 days. By April 12, the administration said the rate increased to 8.17 days. Similarly the mortality doubling rate has increased. At the beginning of April it was at 2.5 days and it is now at 5.5 days.

(Springfield-jm) -- Governor J.B. Pritzker said Tuesday that state's financial footing would be further tested as Illinois responds to the COVID-19 pandemic. Illinois has already spent $168.5 million responding to the outbreak, according to figures from the state comptroller’s office. The Governor is joining other state Governor’s in asking for federal assistance.

(Washington-jm) -- The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration  announced on Tuesday it will award $446,739,181 in aid to 78 airports in Illinois. Champaign’s Willard Airport will receive $1.8 million while Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington will receive $4.6 million.

(Ford County-jm) -- Local police have released recent activity. Gibson City police arrested Michael Price, 38, for domestic battery on April 11th. On April 13th, Derrick Akerland, 23, of Paxton was arrested for possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver cannabis, possession of cannabis, possession of adult use cannabis in a motor vehicle, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper lane usage following a traffic stop on E. State Street. A Paxton officer noticed a one hitter pipe in plain site and a search uncovered several pills of alprazolam and several baggies of cannabis. Both suspects were taken to the Ford County Jail.

 

(Paxton-jm) -- Summer maintenance projects and the fiscal year 20 budget hi-lite the agenda for the Paxton Buckley Loda School Board meeting tonight. In addition, school board members will also consider the Project Lead the Way grant for the junior high. The PBL School board meeting gets underway at 6pm.

(Rantoul-jm) -- Rantoul police continue to seek the public's help in the search for a suspect from a shooting last week. The shooting occurred Friday afternoon at Falcon Way apartments. Police say an 18 year old was shot in the upper back and taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. Police don’t have any suspects at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call Rantoul Police.

The first wave of payments is just going out and Attorney General Raoul says his office is already getting complaints about con artists trying to get people’s personal information. (Springfield-jm) -- Illinois’ small businesses are in a better position to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic than those in most other states. Illinois has the 7th least affected small business marketplace, according to a study from Wallethub. Illinois scored well in the share of small businesses operating in high-risk industries, ranking 46th, and also high risk among total small business employees, ranking 45th.

 

 

(Washington-jm) -- The U.S. Department of Education has awarded $218 million to Illinois institutions of higher education for emergency financial aid to students. The funding, which comes from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund authorized by the CARES Act, will be used to provide cash grants to students for expenses related to disruptions to their educations due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Colleges and universities will be required to use the funding to provide cash grants to students to cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

 

(Ivesdale-jm) -- First responders were called to a motorcycle accident in rural Champaign County. The accident occurred east of Ivesdale. The man driving the motorcycle was airlifted to the hospital.
