High Winds Cause Damage and Power Outings in the WPXN Listening Area

High Winds of over 80mph were reported in northeastern Iroquois County. Several reports of damage came in from east of Loda to Watseka. Damage included snapped trees, down limbs to scattered debris and damaged buildings. Power was also knocked out in the WPXN Listening Area.

 

(Undated--jc)  -- Memorial Day is coming up, which means more people will be hitting the roads in Illinois, but they won't be alone.Memorial Day is traditionally the start of the summer driving season. It's also traditionally the Illinois State Police's busiest time.The state of Illinois is one of the states taking part in a national "Border to Border" campaign this weekend. The effort is organized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign. The goal is to use the power of 10,000 agencies around the country to increase seat belt use and save lives.The unofficial start to summer is 5pm on Friday.

This year’s summer movies are ;Ralph Breaks the Internet on June 14; Captain Marvel July 12 and the Lego Movie August 9th. All movies will start around dusk. (Gifford-jc)  -- The Gifford School district has no plans for an amended budget for the current fiscal year. With the next year’s budget, local school officials say there should be little effect of the Champaign County Property Tax bills being mailed out later than usual. Superintendent Rod Grimsley says the school’s budget is not prepared annually needing early tax money

 

 

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Seward Johnson’s monumental sculpture of Abraham Lincoln was installed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum on Wednesday in a joint initiative by the presidential library and the City of Springfield. “Return Visit” – which stands 31 feet tall and weighs 37,000 pounds – depicts Lincoln discussing the Gettysburg Address with a modern man. It will be displayed in Springfield until September of next year. “The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is home to one of the five copies of the Gettysburg Address written in Lincoln’s own handwriting.

Pritzker’s $41 billion, six-year capital construction counts on revenue from doubling the state’s gas tax, increasing vehicle registration fees, higher alcohol taxes, imposing a surcharge on ride-sharing services and levying a 7-percent tax on streaming media services.Pritzker defended those plans Wednesday amid renewed criticism from across the aisle. A Republican state Representative said that instead of increasing taxes to pay for infrastructure projects the state needs, lawmakers should find efficiencies in how the state spends what it already collects from taxpayers.Lawmakers have a deadline of May 31 to pass legislation with simple majorities. After that, for anything to take effect immediately, it will take super majorities in both chambers.

CHICAGO (AP) — CEO Oscar Munoz says he will be aboard United Airlines' first flight of a Boeing 737 Max once regulators agree to let the aircraft fly again. Munoz made the promise after Chicago-based United's annual meeting with shareholders. In crashes in Indonesia in October and Ethiopia in March, an automated system called MCAS mistakenly turned the noses of the planes down in response to faulty readings from a single sensor. 346 people died. As a result, regulators grounded the plane.

(Fisher--jc)  Fisher village leaders are looking to move forward after agreeing to purchase two and one half acres of farm land adjacent to Richmond Park. The new part of the park will be used for the local softball program.  Village leaders will look to pass an ordinance to finalize the land purchase. Local residents are expected to help with the project.

 

(Rantoul--jc)  Congress Avenue and Garrard Street is the location for the upcoming farmer’s market in Rantoul. The first one will be next Wednesday. The farmer’s market will run from 4pm to 7pm. Markets will run every other week.
