Governor JB Pritzker has Announced his Graduated Income Tax Proposal

(Springfield--jc) Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is unveiling his graduated income tax proposal, saying most taxpayers will see some relief. The plan goes like this, earn less than 10 thousand dollars, you pay 4 point 75 in income taxes. Earn between 10 thousand and one hundred grand, you pay 4 point 95 percent.Those making 100 to 250 thousand dollars pay the current 4 point 95 percent. The big jump is for those making over 250 thousand dollars. There tax would be between 7 point 75 percent and 8 percent. The governor says this is needed…

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Reaction to the announcement coming from the states Chamber of Commerce. A leading Illinois business advocate says Gov. J.B Pritzker has it "backward" in trying to solve the state's fiscal crisis with a graduated income tax plan. Todd Maisch is president and CEO of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce. He says Pritzker's plan to raise $3.4 billion in new revenue from a progressive tax structure will drive out businesses. Maisch says the Democratic governor and state lawmakers should get spending under control first, then boost the economy, then turn to revenue.

 

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Springfield has approved an ordinance that would allow the city spend up to $50,000 to keep Abraham Lincoln's home open during a federal government shutdown. The State Journal-Register reports the City Council unanimously passed the ordinance Tuesday. It gives the city the option of using lodging taxes to keep the Abraham Lincoln Home National Historic Site open for about a month. Many tourists were disappointed when the site closed during the partial government shutdown that started Dec. 22.

 

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — A man suspected of fatally shooting an Illinois sheriff's deputy has been charged with first-degree murder. Winnebago County State's Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross says the charge against 39-year-old Floyd E. Brown of Springfield was upgraded after McHenry County Sheriff's Deputy Jacob Keltner died of his injuries. Authorities say Brown was taken into custody hours after he fled a Rockford hotel where a warrant for his arrest was being served.

(Springfield--ab)  -- Problems with home repairs and remodeling lead Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s top 10 list of consumer complaints.

The office received more than 21 thousand complaints last year…and for the first time since 2000…construction related issues came in at number one. other top complaints pertain to consumer debt, identity theft and scams. Attorney General Raoul says they often begin with a bogus phone call.

The office also logged many complaints about used car sales, cell phones and cable and satellite t-v.

 

(Springfield-jc) --  With an economy that’s producing more job openings than there are people to fill them, applicants and even newly-hired workers walking away from their jobs, leaving no notice to their employers.The term “ghosting” comes from the dating world, when one party suddenly cuts off contact with the other without notice. Multiple outlets are now reporting job applicants and even newly-hired workers are ghosting employers, skipping interviews or not returning to work, leaving no notice.The situation has even gotten the attention of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Republican opposition to the graduated tax plan Gov. J.B. Pritzker is floating has been swift. The Democratic governor announced Thursday a plan to change Illinois' flat-rate tax structure to one that ranges from 4.75 to 7.95 percent. He claims it would raise $3.4 billion extra a year while the vast majority of taxpayers would pay less in taxes. House Republican Leader Jim Durkin of Western Springs said the GOP opposes "a $3.4 billion tax increase on Illinois families and businesses."

 

 

(Bloomington--jc)    Illinois Wesleyan University is offering a voluntary retirement incentive program, merging some academic departments and reducing visiting faculty positions as part of an effort to find $1.1 million in budget savings for fiscal year 2020. The changes were provided this week during budget update meeting. President Eric Jensen says the challenges facing all higher education in the state of Illinois prompted the move. University officials hope the cuts can be made over the next couple of years to keep in the budget in line.

(Rantoul--jc)  A candidates forum is set for next Thursday in Rantoul. The venue is the Rantoul Municipal Building on Tanner Street starting at 6pm on Thursday. Candidates to speak include those running for Rantoul Village Board, Rantoul Township High School board, local library. All candidates will be given a two minute opening remark period. Then  questions will be asked from the audience through a moderator. The Spring election is set for Tuesday April Second. (Watseka--jc)  --  The Iroquois County Clerk’s election department will be open Saturday, March 30th from 8:30 a.m. to noon.  Registered voters’ who would like to vote before the April 2, 2019 Consolidated Election, may come into the County Clerk’s Office up through the early voting deadline, Monday, April 1st, to cast their vote  The County Clerk’s Office office hours are, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

The Rantoul School District will have their monthly meeting on March 11th. The board will discuss and vote on proposed board policy amendments on various topics. The board will also look at the Superintendents employment contract and  approve the 2019-2020 academic calendar.
