Federal Judge Says Printing of 3D Guns Should be Decided by the President or Congress

SEATTLE (AP) — A federal judge hearing arguments over a settlement that allows a company to post online plans for printing 3D guns said the overall issue of such untraceable plastic weapons should be decided by the president or Congress. U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik said Tuesday that he'll rule on the legal issues involving the settlement between the company and the Trump administration. He added, however, that a solution to the greater problem is better suited to the president or Congress.

 

(Coles County--jc)  A single vehicle accident blocked some lanes along Interstate 57 on Tuesday morning. Police say 32 year old Brian Hang of Washington state lost control of his semi in the southbound lanes of I-57 near milepost 192 in northern Coles County. The semi entered the right ditch, eventually rolling and blocking the southbound lanes. Hang was cited for improper lane usage. No injuries were reported.

 

 

CHICAGO (AP) — A federal judge in two high-profile criminal cases in Illinois has been removed from hearing all his cases after revelations he exchanged emails with a paralegal at Springfield's U.S. attorney's office, commenting on a trial he was overseeing. Colin Bruce has been presiding over ex-U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock's corruption case and the case involving the kidnapping of a Chinese scholar. But the chief judge for U.S. courts in central Illinois said Tuesday he'd "temporarily reassigned" Bruce's cases.

(Paxton--jc)  -- Ford County Taxpayers are reminded that Friday, September 7th is the due date for the 2nd installment of the 2017 payable 2018 real estate taxes. Taxes may be paid at the courthouse, drop box in front of the courthouse, any Ford County bank or by mail if postmarked by September 7th.  After that date, you will need to pay by mail or at the courthouse.  The banks will not take payments after September 7th.

 

(Springfield--jc)  -- Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed Senate Bill 25-40 into law. The law is aimed at protecting the integrity of the non-profit grant process, and makes a multitude of changes to the current grant process—including a requirement that grant dollars are to be spent or distributed during the fiscal year for which they were appropriated·     Other points of the new law restricts governors from transferring money into other state funds to be used for purposes other than what the legislature intended and also creates a  mechanism to allow the comptroller to stop payments in cases where there are issues with a grant program and a blackout period before elections when state officials would not be allowed to make grant announcements. 53rd District State Senator Jason Barickman was the key sponsor of the bill in the Illinois State Senate.

(Illinois--ab) --  Illinois state police troopers were out on the scene of a crash on I-57 Northbound at milepost 222 in Champaign County Tuesday morning. Both lanes of traffic were shut down and was diverted on to US Route 45. All lanes of traffic were open just before 1pm.  Police say a semi was leaving a rest stop area when a second semi in the northbound lanes applied brakes due to slowing traffic. The two semis collided and diesel fuel was also spilled. Champaign County Hazmat helped clean the scene.

 

 

(Roberts--jc)  The public is invited to attend a free concert presented by the youth of St. Paul's Lutheran church in Roberts.  The Waterson, Vaughan, Geerdes, Swan, Kietzman, Pollard, and Walters kids along with some of their friends have prepared a program including pop, Broadway hits, classical, jazz, country--something for everyone. The event is set for Sunday August 26th at 2 in the afternoon at the church on Weldon Street.

(Springfield--jc)  --A new report on state budgeting has prompted fresh debate about how tax dollars are spent north and south of Interstate 80 in Illinois. A Paul Simon Institute for Public Policy at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale study found that most people in Illinois, no matter what part of the state they live in, don't feel like they're getting a fair share of the state's tax revenue. Furthermore, it found Chicago and the suburban counties in northern Illinois got back less money from the state than they sent to Springfield in taxes while counties in southern Illinois tended to get more money from the state than they contributed.The institute’s report found 19 of Illinois’ southernmost counties received $2.81 in state spending for every dollar they sent to the state. Results were similar in other parts of Illinois, except in the Chicago area, where Cook County received 90 cents on the dollar and the five collar counties got 53 cents for every dollar they paid the state.


 

(Farmer City--jc)  It was a thank you from one town to another this week. Officials from Farmer City gave a shout out on social media to crews from the village of Rantoul. Rantoul sent 2 bucket trucks and 4 crew members to Farmer City on Monday to help with broken power poles and power lines. The mutual aid was provided as part of both towns being part of the Illinois Municipal Utility Association.

 

(Paxton--jc)  The process for a new awning for a business in Paxton continues. The Paxton City Council approved a new 90 inch awning and sign for Mom and Pop’s Kettle Korn Shop. The business is located at 119 South Market Street in the city.  The sign is expected to be completed by the middle of September.

(Urbana--jc)  A Paxton man plead guilty to stealing scrap silver from a manufacturing plant in  Champaign. The News Gazette reports that 37 year old Dustin Kurtz of Paxton admitted that between July of 20-14 and March of 20-18 he took scrap silver from Littlefuse Incorporated. Champaign County Judge Tom Difanis ordered Kurtz to pay just over 37 thousand dollars in restitution to the Littlefuse company and was also sentenced to a two year second chance probation. He had no prior convictions.

 

(Chicago--jc)  --Illinois’ tech manufacturers have a serious shortage of skilled talent and optimism about the state’s economic climate.The Technology Manufacturers Association of Illinois has compiled a year of surveys from their thousand members and found that they’re optimistic about the national economy but think the state’s local economic climate is not where it should be. Even with the problematic tariff debate, Illinois manufacturers’ overall outlook in July was 84 percent positive. Their opinion of Illinois’ economy has stayed near 20 percent for the last 12 months.

(Paxton--jc)  -- A sludge removal project is set to begin in the city of Paxton. Local leaders say sludge will be removed from the city’s wastewater-treatment plant on the city’s west side.The  Metro-Ag Company will do the work. Cost is under 5 cents per gallon. The project could cost up to 46 thousand dollars and one million gallons of sludge being removed at the plant.



(Watseka--ab) Tomorrow , the Iroquois County Republican Central Committee will host a steak fry in the 4-H building at the Iroquois County fairgrounds  just north of Crescent City along Route 49.. The event will begin at 6 p.m. Two speakers are now lined up for the evening: Travis Sterling and Joe Alexander. Sterling is the new executive director of the Illinois GOP. Alexander, a member of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign committee, will speak about his travels and experiences with President Trump.A gun raffle will take place with three guns offered as prizes. Check with precinct  committeeman for tickets or on the groups facebook page. Ticket may also be purchased the night of the event.


 

URBANA, Ill. (AP) — Lawmakers are summoning University of Illinois officials to Springfield to discuss a new public-private innovation center near downtown Chicago. University of Illinois President Tim Killeen and other university officials have been asked to attend a Senate Higher Education Committee hearing about the Discovery Partners Institute on August. 28. The hearing comes after Killeen was urged in June to inform the community about the project.
