(Chicago–jm)  –Longtime Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks, who won an ERA title and a World Series championship during his 12-year big league career, is retiring, according to his agent. Hendricks, 35, played last season with the Los Angeles Angels. He spent his first 11 years with Chicago where he won 97 games utilizing a changeup/sinker combination that kept hitters off-balance. He had a 3.68 ERA during his time with the Cubs, winning the ERA title in 2016, the same year Chicago won the World Series.

 

(Undated–jc)  Houston leapfrogged Purdue for the number 1 spot in the NCAA Men’s Basketball poll. UConn, Duke and Arizona round out the top five. Michigan is #6, Illinois is #14, UCLA is #15, Michigan State is #17 and Wisconsin is #24.

 

(Champaign–jc)  In her first week of being at the top of opposing teams' scouting reports, Illinois sophomore Berry Wallace was recognized to the Big Ten's Weekly Honor Roll after delivering back-to-back 20-point games as the Fighting Illini opened the season 2-0. Across Week 1, Wallace averaged 24.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 34.5 minutes per game.  Wallace opened the season with a 27-point, 11-rebound double-double in a 91-67 win over SEMO. 

 

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– Illinois forward David Mirkovic is the inaugural Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the 2025-26 season, the conference office announced Monday. Mirkovic averaged a double-double of 18.0 points and 12.5 rebounds along with 2.5 assists in a pair of Illini wins. He shot 57% from the field and 91% from the free-throw line.
