End of the Wiseman Era at Memphis

Will the NCAA always remain king? Or will it take a hit with players coming out of high school starting to go over sea’s or not even go to college to take the year and prepare for the NBA draft? Look at guys like Lemelo Ball for instance who chose to go to the Euro Leagues opposed to the NCAA path, and it’s working. He will have another year of professional basketball under his belt in the second-best pro league in the world.

In comes James Wiseman. The Memphis recruit has had this looming cloud of doom around him ever since he started his career there. Penny Hardaway recruited the Nashville Tennesee native since he was invovled with Wisemans AAU team. Hardaway paid Wiseman’s mother $11,500 in order to move her family from Nashville to Memphis. At the time Hardaway was not the coach of the team but rather a booster to his alma mater. That investment from Hardway earned Wiseman a 12 game suspension(which Wiseman had a lift put on it in a local court which allowed him to play) and finally the 12 gamer, which would have been lifted on Jan. 12 against South Florida. Wiseman is no longer enrolled at the school. He posted on Instagram that he has dropped out, and will hire an agent in order to prepare for the 2020 NBA draft, which he is the projected third overall pick.

With Wiseman’s decision to no longer attend college, how or will it change the landscape of college basketball? There may not be much impact, since that the NCAA is the best platform for young rising stars in the basketball world to get their names out there, but we might see some changes with top tier talent.
