Advocates from Moms Demand Action gathered outside of the Capitol Tuesday to support bills they say will reduce gun violence

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois House was unanimous in supporting a measure to remove some required labeling from the package of meat being processed for people like hunters. State Representative Adam Niemerg’s House Bill 2601 passed and now goes to the Senate. The measure removes the labeling “not inspected” but keeps the labeling “not for sale.”

 

(Springfield-jm) – Dozens of advocates from Moms Demand Action and One Aim Illinois gathered outside of the Capitol Tuesday to support bills they say will reduce gun violence. Capitol News Illinois reports one of the bills would require police to remove firearms from a home when a judge grants an order of protection for victims of domestic violence under the state’s firearms remedy law. The bill is known as Karina’s Bill after Karina Gonzalez. Sherri Williams with Moms Demand Action says their advocacy includes keeping gun issues in front of lawmakers…

 

 

Sherri Williams with Moms Demand Action. In addition to Karina’s Bill, the Homicide Victim’s Families Right act would allow victims’ families to request a review of a murder. The case has to be older than three years and would be reviewed by officers who weren’t on the original case. Meanwhile the Homicide Data Transparency Bill would require law enforcement to track and report how many homicides happen every month, as well as if anyone has been charged or arrested.

 

(Rural Rantoul-jm) – A Champaign County man was struck by lightning Tuesday afternoon. It happened northwest of Rantoul just before 5pm. Authorities say the man was closing a metal shed door when the shed was struck by lightning. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

(Rantoul-jm) – The United State Air Force along with Rantoul village leaders will hold a community meeting later this month about PFAS or forever chemicals that were found on the former Chanute Air Force Base. This topic is resurfacing in Rantoul after the Air Force’s Civil Engineer Center did a site inspection. That’s where they found these forever chemicals in soil, groundwater, stormwater, surface water, and sediment at several AFFF release areas. Those results determined an investigation was needed. Regarding the public meeting, it’s on April 30th at 7 p.m. at Rantoul Village Hall. Air Force representatives will be there to answer questions about the remedial process.

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Senate approved a measure that would create a new state agency for early childhood programs. Senate Bill 1 was approved unanimously to over time consolidate initiatives in three separate state agencies into one new state agency titled the Department of Early Childhood. In the first year of the transition, it's expected to cost taxpayers $13 million. The measure can now be taken up by the House.

(Urbana-jm) – The University of Illinois Police Department is reporting an attempted sexual assault at a fraternity house. The attempted sexual assault occurred Saturday approximately at 12 a.m. Police were alerted to the attempted sexual assault from a “Campus Security Authority” Tuesday afternoon.

(Paxton-jm) – Paxton first responders were called to a possible train leak late Wednesday morning. Crews were called around 10:30 am to the northbound Canadian National train. The car that was reportedly leaking was outside of city limits and there was no danger to residents.
