Martin Luther King Jr. Day being observed today

(Undated–jc)  Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Today is a federal holiday in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. Born in 1929, King's actual birthday is January 15th. King Junior was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.

 

(Chicago–jc) Illinois Legislators are expected to address a new voting measure when they return to Springfield on Tuesday. Some states around the country are looking to further secure the election process, but Illinois is moving in a different direction.  Members of the Illinois House could look at House Bill 41-98 , which would allow people to vote by mail for all elections rather than sending notices to voters to vote in any one election period.  Executive Director of the Chicago Elections Commission Charles Holiday believes the measure would increase the amount of voters…

Opponents on the issue say that fraud could easily occur under such a measure if made into law. The Illinois House is due back in Springfield, tomorrow.

 

(Springfield-dg-)The Miss Illinois County Fair Queen Pageant was held this weekend in Springfield. Morgan County Fair Queen, Natalie Evans was named the new Miss Illinois Fair Queen. Ford County Fair Queen Maci Kingren was 4th runner up and Fisher Fair Queen Ella Luna-Drone made the top 16.

One measure expected to come before the Illinois General Assembly next week is House bill 41-98 which would allow actual ballots be sent to qualified voters rather than just a notice to receive a ballot by mail. Some opponents of the measure say the identification process of voters and ballot security could be in jeopardy with this idea. The Illinois House reconvenes on Tuesday in Springfield.
